SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,693, dated October 23, 1888.

Application filed April 6, 1388. Serial No. 269,824.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, JOSEPH P. DANDURAND, of Virginia City, in the county of Storey and State of Nevada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Key-Hole Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in key-hole protectors, the object of the same being to provide a device ofthis character by means of which the key can be so adjusted in the look as to prevent the forced ejection therefrom in any manner.

A further object is to furnish a device of the above character provided with a spring at.- tachment, by means of which the key may be forced from the look by the insertion of a key from the opposite side, and upon the removal of which the key will automatically return to its position in the hole, where it can be locked against removal by means hereinafter specified.

A further object is to provide a device ofthe above character which shall be simple and economical in construction and durable and efficient in use; and with these ends in view my invent-ion consists in the certain features of construction and combinations of parts,as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my invention. Fig. 2'is a side View thereof. Fig. 3 is a section, and Fig. 4. is a rear view.

. Fig. 1 represents that portion of a door to which the lock isattached and is provided with the key-hole. To the inside of the door adjacent to the keyhole is pivoted the shield 3, provided with the opening 4. To the back of the shield is secured or formed integral the casing 5, the main part of which is of sufficient depth to receive the bit of a key. The

casing is provided with the wall 6, the same having a screw-threaded opening, 7, therein.

The upper portion of the casing is elongated for the reception of the key-shank, and is provided with the shoulder 8, adapted to receive one end of the spiral spring 9, the opposite end of said spring being secured to the key, as shown.

It will be observed that when the key is adjusted in the shield-casing the action of the spring 9 will cause the key to rest well forward in the key-hole 2. Therefore by inserting an other key in the said hole and pressing the same against the key 10 the latter will recede, thereby enabling the lock to be opened from the outside, the spring causing the key 10 to return to its normal position when the outside key is removed.

The key 10, as a safeguard, can be made equally as efficient as a bolt by turning the screw 11, registering in opening 7, against the bit of the key, thereby preventing the key from being pushed out of the hole 2 by outside pressure.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with the shield and recessed plate, of a key inovably secured therein and a set-screw adapted to impinge against the key, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination, with the shield and recessed plate, of a key movably secured therein and a spring for automatically returning the key, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination, with the shield and recessed plate, of akey movably secured therein, a spring secured to said key and impinging against the plate, and aset-screw adapted to bear against the bit of the key, substantially as shown and described.
