SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,548, dated October 23, 1888.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES S. Morr, of Patchogue, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mast-Hoops, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to mast-hoops of the class which are formed of two separate sections hinged to each other and provided with m a spring-catch for locking the sections together, so that they can be applied directly to or removed from the mast of a vessel without the need of sliding them on or off the end of the mast.

The object of the invention is to simplify, strengthen,andotherwiseimprovetheconstruction both of the hingejoint and of the locking and unlocking joint; and to this end the invention consists of a novel construction and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully described, and distinctly claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan View, partly in section, ofa mast-hoop embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge View of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the locking-joint of the same 0 on the line m m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the hinge-joint of the same on the line y y, Fig. l.

The mast-hoop thus illustrated is formed of two opposite semicircular wooden sections, A 5 A, the cross-section of each of which shows the usual convexinner edge and flat outer edge.

The hinge B, by which the ends of the sections A A are permanently jointed together, is formed of two metallic sleeves, GO, curved o lengthwise on the circle of the complete hoop and having the flattened elliptical cross-sec tion thereof, so as to fit tightly over the respective meeting ends of the hoop, as shown, and with the straight-end edges of the sleeves 5 O O are formed integrally hinge-eyes D D, through which a hingepin, E, is passed to complete the joint. The sleeves G G are preferably riveted to the respective sections A A, as indicated.

To each sleeve 0 O is permanently united a metallic strap, F, which is carried around and riveted to the flat periphery of the corresponding wooden section, and the farther ends of the straps F are also permanently attached to metallic sleeves G G, of like shape with the 5 sleeves O G, fitted tightly over the releasable ends of the respective sections A A. The re leasable end of the section A, together with the sleeve G thereon, is made of such a size as to slide freely but closely in the sleeve G, which projects considerably beyond the end of its section A, and in the cylindrical outer side of the metallic sleeve G and wooden section A is formed a longitudinal slot, H, the bottom H of which is approximately straight, 6 and which is thus deeper at its middle than at its ends.

In the slot H is arranged a flat metallic spring-strip, I, the ends of which are attached to the bottom H of the slot, but the middle part of which is free to yield inward and to spring outward when released, and carries a beveled catch, J, which automatically engages a slot, K, in the outer cylindrical wall of the meeting sleeve G, when the sections AA are 7 5 pressed together, but which can be easily pressed inward by the thumbnail to release the two sections and allow them to be spread apart.

Having thus describcdmy invention, what l. claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with thejointing ends of two wooden semicircular hoop sections having a cross-section flattened on the outer side, of two metallic sleeves curved lengthwise on the circle of the hoop, having the same flattened cross-section therewith,and having eyelugs formed integrally with their respective flattened meeting edges, the said sleeves being 0 fitted on the ends of the wooden sections, and ahinge-pin passed through the eye-lugs on the two sleeves, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with the meeting ends of two wooden semicircular hoopsections, ofa metallic sleeve curved lengthwise on the circle of the hoop, fitted on but projecting beyond the end of one section and having a slot in its outer 1ongitudinally-curved side, a metallic sleeve of like shape with,but smaller than and adaptedto slide in, the first sleeve, fitted catch on its middle part to engage the slot in Wholly on the end of the other wooden section, the outer sleeve, substantially as described. a longitudinal slot having an approximately straight bottom formed in the outer curved CHARLES MOTT' 5 side of the latter sleeve and of the correspond- Witnesses:
