Description

(No Model.)
A. MESS.
MEDICAL INJEGTOR.
Patented Oct. 23, 1888.
Ilivrrnn @rati-ns ANDREW llIESS, OF KILBOURN CITY, `WISCONSIN.
VIDICAL. INJECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391.546, dated October 23, 15288.
Application filed August 16, 1888. Serial No. 282,849. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW Mass, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kilbourn City, Columbia county, W'isconsin, have invented certain newr and useful Improvements in Medical Injectors, of which the following is a specication.
The object of my invention is to provide an apparatus for injecting medical fumes or vaporsinto the bodies of human beings and beasts for curative purposes. I find that certain kinds of medicine injected into the bodythrough some one of its openings-as, for instance, the rectum-is more effective than when taken internally in a solid or a liquid form.
My invention consists in a novel apparatus embodying a chamber for containing the medical substances, a nozzle at the front end of the chamber, a valve at the rear end, a plug in rear of the valve having an extension passing through the valve and bellows secured to the plug.
My invention also consists in placing a perforated partition in front of the chamber for containing the medical substances and in rear of a nozzle, on the outer end of which is a smooth round collar, the rear end of the chamber beingtprovided with a hinged valve, behind which is located a screw-plug, to which the bellows are secured.
. In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal central section, of the device.
The chamber A, for containing the medical substances, islocated within a cylindrical body, B,whieh is provided with a handle, B. At its rear end the chamber A is enlarged to form a valve-chamber,ct, andvalve seat a for the valve C, which is hinged at c, as shown, and is provided with a handle, c. The outer end of the valvechamber a is screw threaded internally, as shown, to receive the screw-threaded end of the plug D,which is provided with a auge-cap, el. The plug D is provided with an extension, d', preferably conical or tapered, as shown, and having a conical or other shaped bore or opening, cl2. The extension cl passes through an opening, d, in the valve C. Vhen screwed home, the plug holds the valve shut.
An air-blast apparatus is placed at the rear end of the cylinder, in this instance shown as consisting of a pair of bellows, E, of suitable construction, adapted for attachment to the cylinder. At its air-delivery end the bellows is provided with a nozzle which nts snugly into the opening cltof the screw-plug D. The bellows may be readily withdrawn and the screwplug removed, thus allowing the valve C to be opened and access to be had to the chamber A. Vhen thus opened, the mediealingredients may be placed within the chamber A. The front end of the cylinder B is reduced and screwthreaded at b to receive the screwthreaded end of the front piece, F, which is preferably made to taper from its inner to its outer end. Between the end of the cylinder B and the end of the front piece, F, is placed a perforated partition, f, through which the fumes or vapors from the chamber A may pass without carrying with them solid particles. The front piece, F, is hollow, the opening g preferably being tapered from its inner end outwardly, and the exterior of the front piece is preferably tapered in a similar way. The eXtreme outer' end of the front piece is reduced and serewthreaded at g to receive the screw-threaded inner end of the nozzle G, which tapers to its outer end, where it is provided with a smooth round collar, lt, adapted to enter the animals body without injury. The nozzle may be varied in size and character to suit different persons and beasts. As will be seen, the nozzle may be readily unscrcwed and replaced.
As before stated, the ignited medical substances are placed in the chamber A,when the bellows and screw-plug are removed and the valve C open. When the valve is closed and the screw-plug and bellows in position, air may be forced through the chamber A,so as to promote combustion and carry the fumes or vapors through the perforated partitions f out through the nozzle G. The force of the current of air may be regulated by properly operating the bellows.
Any suitable medical substances may be employed in my apparatus, and may be changed to suit the disease to be treated. Incense and ilavanna are both medicines to restore pressure in the breast, lungs, or stomach. W'hen the fumes or vapors from the substance are 1njeeted into the body, they will break through rated partition f between the front piece and al1 obstructions and put the affected parts in the cylindrical body and at the front end of their normal condition. the chamber A, the removable nozzle on the I claim as my inventionend of the front piece having a smooth round 5 1.
