UNITE STATES PATENT ,OFFIcE.
ALEXANDER FULTON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
VAPORIZERL SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349.273, dated September 14, 1886.
(No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER FULTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful I1nprovement in Vaporizers or Exhalers for Medical Purposes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of a vaporizer or exhaler embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists of an apparatus for the diffusion of volatile agents over the mucous, sub-mucous, and internal surfaces of the air-passages, lungs, ears, nose, &c., likewise to the eye, and all openings of the human body, the construction being substantially as hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a closed box, in the present case cylindrical in shape, and formed of metal or other suitable material. WVithin the body is a perforated diaphragm, B, which divides the body into cells 0 D, constituting, respectively, a receptacle for the therapeutic agent and a vaporizing-chamber.
Connected with the cover D or wall of the cell D is a cup, E, and nozzle F, each being provided with a screw-cap, G, whereby the openings formed by said cup and nozzle may be tightly closed to prevent the escape of vapor from the body. The cup and nozzle project from the cell D at opposite places of the latter,
so as to form an unobstructed passage when the caps G are removed, through the nozzle, cell, and cup. The said cupE is of conical shape,
having a rounded flaring rim, and the plug G is within said cup, so as to be out of the. way, yet having its head readily accessible.
The cell 0 contains sponge or other absorbent material, and is charged with the therapeutic agent, the vapor whereof enters the cell D. Now, when the cup or nozzle is applied to the locality to be treated, the plugs having been removed, the hygrometric and atmospheric pressure which permeates the cells expels the vapor from the body A and directs it against the part to be treated, acting thereon in an effective and reliable manner.
The device is also serviceable as an atmospheric disinfectant. The base of the body, being closed, cannot leak, and the cup and nozzle are accessible without inverting the body, and the solid or fluid n ature o l the therapeutic agent is prevented from escaping, as the same remains in the cell 0.
I am aware that it is not new to provide the cover of an inhaler with several tubes leading therefrom; neither is it new to construct a device of this character with a perforated diaphragm, and such I do not broadly claim; but
in the device shown and described herein the construction of the cup is of such form and character as to permit the substance inclosed within the casin g to more readily operate upon the desired portion of the person.
Having thus described my invention, what-I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A vaporizer or device of the character described, consisting of a cylindrical vessel, A, divided by a perforated diaphragm into two cells, a nozzle, F, and a cup, E, both nozzle and cup being connected to the cover of the said device, the cup being of conical shape and having a rounded flaring rim with a plug within the same, all of said parts being combined and arranged substantially as described.
