BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates generally to machines for packing piles of printed matter and, more specifically, it relates to devices for handling such piles in the course of their packing.
The present invention can find most utility when used for handling newspaper piles which are packed on highspeed automatic transfer packing lines.
PRIOR ART At present, there are known to be in widespread use devices for pile handling during the packing thereof, comprising shells each adapted to be placed over the pile, the shells being secured on an intermittent-motion continuous conveyer for travelling from one packing station to another. The conveyer has two vertical and two horizontal portions interconnected through radially rounded-off sections along which are provided stationary ways congruous to the latter for the rollers fixed on each of shells to interact therewith.
The known device, though ensuring an accurate space orientation of the shells with respect to piles and, consequently, high-quality piles packing, however, fails to provide an adequately high speed of the packing process, with this being due to the fact that when the shells are passing the rounded-off sections, they perform linear motion, the speed imparted thereto being some-.
what reduced to protect the shells from striking against the guide ways; if otherwise, the rollers would fail to catch the guide ways. This affects space orientation of the shells with respect to the piles and, in some cases, may damage the shells.
OBJECTS AND SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to eliminate the above-mentioned disadvantages.
It is an essential object of the invention to provide a device for handling piles that will be capable of accurately orientating the shells with respect to the piles.
It is still another object of the invention to provide a device that will ensure a higher speed of packing.
These and other objects of the invention are attained in that the device for handling piles or bundles comprising openable frames moving intermittently from one pile packing station to another and each adapted for being placed over a pile, according to the invention, is provided with two carriages, each mounted on horizontal parallel guide ways so as to reciprocate therealong in mutually opposite directions to impart intermittent motion to the frames from one packing station to another, while each of the frames is secured on verticallyarranged upright columns mounted on the respective carriage and capable of traversing in the vertical plane for placing the frame onto and removing it from the pile.
This constructive embodiment permits obtaining a higher packing speed and improved operating reliability of the device since, due to the provision of the carriages, the openable frames perform only a progressive linear motion, whereby L the carriages and, consequently, the frames can be imparted a higher traversing speed.
In order to simplify the construction of the entire de vice, it is expedient for each carriage to have a recess and a gear, which the columns of each be interconnected through a crosstie with a rack bar fixed thereto, the rack bar being passed through the recess of the can riage, arranged in parallel with the columns and adapted to interact with the gear so as to impart vertical reciprocations to the columns; in adidtion, each gear is arranged on a shaft and is adapted to slide therealong as a result of traversing of the columns, with the shaft being positioned in parallel with the guide ways and adapted to rotate in synchronism with each other in same direction. Further, due to their sliding along the gears made fast on the carriages, the shafts serve as a type of additional ways for the carriages. This adds to the stability of the carriages during their traversing and, consequently, ensures more accurate openable frame orientation relative to piles when the frames are traversed from one packing station to another. The provision of columns, cross-ties and rack bars renders the frames more rigid and, consequently, provides for their accurate orientation with respect to the piles being packed.
In order to provide for synchronous travel of the carriages, it is expedient that a gear rack be mounted on each carriage, with the gear rack being arranged in parallel with the guide ways, while interposed between the gear racks is a gear arranged on a drive shaft and adapted to interact with the gear racks to impart reciprocation to each carriage together with the openable frame from one packing station to another.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING For a better understanding of the present invention a specific embodiment thereof is described in detail below with reference to the appended drawing, in which the sole FIGURE is a schematic diagram of the present device for handling piles of newspapers.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT The device of the present invention comprises two carriages 1, each mounted on horizontal parallel guide ways 2 or 3 so as to reciprocate therealong in mutually opposite directions. The carriages are reciprocated via a gear 4 adapted to interact with gear racks 5 and 6, with each of the gear racks being mounted on the respective carriage l. The gear 4 is arranged on a drive shaft 7 which is rotated by any conventional means suitable for the purpose.
- Each carriage 1 is provided with ways 8 secured thereon, in which are mounted vertical columns 9 carrying an openable frame 10.
The columns 9 are mounted in the ways so as to vertically traverse for the frames to be placed over a pile l l of newspapers and removed therefrom. The pile ll of newspapers is located on a continuous roller conveyor 12 which serves to tuck up the ends of a wrapping material under the pile.
Each carriage 1 has a recess 14, while the columns 9 are interconnected through a cross-tie 15 with a rack bar 16 fixed thereto, the rack bar being passed through the recess 14, arranged in parallel with the columns 9 and adapted to interact with a gear 17 which is mounted on the carriage 1 through a bracket 18. The
gear 17 is arranged on a shaft 19 so as to move there along when the carriage l is traversing. Both shafts 19 are positioned parallel to the ways 2 and 3 and are synchronously rotated by a drive in the same direction, with use being made of any conventional means suit able for the purpose as the drive.
For the gear 17 to slide along the shaft 19 a longitudinal key-way 20 is provided in the shaft, whereas a key 21 is provided on the gear 17.
The device according to the invention operates as follows:
One of the openable frames is located within the zone of tucking up the ends of a wrapping material under the pile, as can be seen in the drawing, while another openable frame 10 is located over the zone of finishing the bundle ends. In order to effect traversing of the frames, the drive of the shaft 7 is activated, with the result that the carriages 1 together with the frames 10 reciprocate along the guides 2 and 3 to arrive at the opposite packing stations. After the drive of the shaft 7 has been deactivated, the frames 10 are at dwell in such a position until another pile together with a wrapping material is fed to the roller conveyer 12, and the packing process is completed at the station of finishing the bundle ends to obtain the finished bundle. Next, the drive of the shafts 19 is activated which results in that the frame 10 located at the station of finishing the bundle ends is raised due to the gear 17 meshing with the gear rack 16, while the frame 10 located over the zone of tucking up the ends of a wrapping material under the pile, is lowered due to the gear rack 16 meshing with the gear 17. Then, the drive of the shaft 19 is deactivated with the frames 10 being at dwell in such a position until the packing process is completed. Further, the entire cycle is repeated.
What we claim is:
l. A device for handling piles or bundles of newspaper type printed matter in the process of their packing, in which in one working position, the pile is wrapped into a packing material and in a second working position, the butt ends of the piles are arrested, said device comprising horizontal parallel guide ways: two carriages, each carriage being mounted on said guide ways and adapted to reciprocate in said guide ways to be capable of moving simultaneously and parallel in mutually opposite directions and stopping alternately in the same working positions; means for imparting simultaneous motion in said mutually opposite directions; columns located on each of said carriages, arranged vertically and capable of moving along a vertical plane; means for synchronous motion of said columns along the vertical plane in the opposite directions in said working positions; two openable frames, each frame being rigidly secured on the corresponding columns and said columns lowering the frame, which is in one working position, and, concurrently raising the frame, which is in the other working position, for gripping and releasing the piles respectively so that for changing the working positions during the motion of the carriages in the mutually opposite directions, the frames pass one above the other.
2. The device as claimed in claim 1, wherein each of said carriages has a recess and a gear, across-tie, said columns of each of said openable frames being interconnected through the cross-tie, a rack bar being fixed to said cross-tie and passing through said recess, said rack bar being arranged parallel to said columns and adapted to interact with said gear so as to impart vertical reciprocations to said columns; a shaft, each of said gears being set on a shaft and adapted to slide therealong as a result of motion of said columns; each of said shafts being positioned parallel to said guide ways and adapted to rotate in synchronism with each other in the same direction.
3. The device as claimed in claim 1, including a gear rack, each of said carriages mounts the gear rack arranged parallel to said guide ways; a drive shaft, a gear interposed between said gear racks and set on a drive shaft so as to interact with said gear racks to impart reciprocations to each of said carriages together with said openable frame from one pile packing station to another.

Claims (3)

1. A device for handling piles or bundles of newspaper type printed matter in the process of their packing, in which in one working position, the pile is wrapped into a packing material and in a second working position, the butt ends of the piles are arrested, said device comprising horizontal parallel guide ways: two carriages, each carriage being mounted on said guide ways and adapted to reciprocate in said guide ways to be capable of moving simultaneously and parallel in mutually opposite directions and stopping alternately in the same working positions; means for imparting simultaneous motion in said mutually opposite directions; columns located on each of said carriages, arranged vertically and capable of moving along a vertical plane; means for synchronous motion of said columns along the vertical plane in the opposite directions in said working positions; two openable frames, each frame being rigidly secured on the corresponding columns and said columns lowering the frame, which is in one working position, and, concurrently raising the frame, which is in the other working position, for gripping and releasing the piles respectively so that for changing the working positions during the motion of the carriages in the mutually opposite directions, the frames pass one above the other.

The device as claimed in claim 1, wherein each of said carriages has a recess and a gear, across-tie, said columns of each of said openable frames being interconnected through the cross-tie, a rack bar being fixed to said cross-tie and passing through said recess, said rack bar being arranged parallel to said columns and adapted to interact with said gear so as to impart vertical reciprocations to said columns; a shaft, each of said gears being set on a shaft and adapted to slide therealong as a result of motion of said columns; each of said shafts being positioned parallel to said guide ways and adapted to rotate in synchronism with each other in the same direction.
3. The device as claimed in claim 1, including a gear rack, each of said carriages mounts the gear rack arranged parallel to said guide ways; a drive shaft, a gear interposed between said gear racks and set on a drive shaft so as to interact with said gear racks to impart reciprocations to each of said carriages together with said openable frame fRom one pile packing station to another.
