HENRY S. PARKER, OF PETERSON, IOVA.
FOOT=REST FOR CHAIRS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,801, dated October 9, 1888.
Application filed July 2, 1888.
T0 @ZZ who/)t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY S. PARKER, of Peterson, in the county of Clay and State of Iowa, have invented'a new and Improved Foot- Rest for Chairs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in foot-rests for chairs, especially adapted for use in connection with infants high chairs, and has for its object to provide a footrest which may be conveniently attached to chairs of different widths, and also conveniently adjusted vertically, as desired; and the further object of the invention is to provide a foot-rest of simple, durable, and economical construction.
Theinvention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a high chair having my foot-rest applied. Fig. 2 :is an enlarged front elevation of the foot-rest applied to the legs of a chair; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line .e of Fig. 2, looking in direction of the arrows.
In carrying out the invention two parallel vertical side brackets, 10, are provided, constructed of any suitable material, preferably of metal, the inner longitudinal faces of which brackets are concaved or recessed, as shown at 11 in Fig. 3, whereby they are adapted to the contour of the chair-legs, the said recess 11 being preferably semicircular. A longitudinal slot, 12, is also produced in the body of the brackets, as best shown in Figs. l and 2. Each bracket 10 consists of a vertical or perpendicular body, constructed as above described, provided at the top with a horizontal arm,13,extending at right angles outward from the body, which arm may be attached to said body or cast integral therewith, as found desirable.
One bracket is provided with a horizontal inwardly-projecting auxiliary arm, 14which arm is attached to or formed integral with the inner face of the main arm 13, as best illustrated in Fig. 3. The said auxiliary arm 14 is Serial No. 278.771. (No model.)y
provided with a longitudinal slot, 15, extending from the outer end a suitable distance in the direction of the main arm 13. The footrest is completed by the addition of a step or table, 16, which step or table is rigidly connected to the upper side of the horizontal arm 13 of the bracket 10 without the auxiliary arm, as illustrated to the left in Figs. 2 and 3. The connection with the opposing brackets l() is an adjustable one, and effected by means of a screw, 17, passing through the slot 15 of the auxiliary arm 14 into the under face of the said table. The screw 17 is preferably so placed that the head thereof will not bind against the said auxiliary arm. Thus by carrying the bracket 10, having the auxiliary arm attached, either inward or outward the device may be expeditiously and conveniently adjusted to chairs of different widths.
ln attaching the device to a chair the recessed portions'of the brackets are brought in engagement with the outer face of the front legs, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and a bolt, 18, provided with a head upon the front end, is passed through the slots 12 of the body and through the chair-legs, as illustrated in Fig. 3. and the said device is retained in the desired position by a thumb-nut, 19, fitted to the rear end of the said bolt. By loosening the said thumb-nut 18 the entire device may be carried bodily upward or downward.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. Adetachable foot-rest fora chair, consisting of parallel longitudinally-slotted perpendicular brackets having their inner faces adapted to the contour ofthe chair-legs, horizontal arms attached to the upper end of said bracket-s extending at right angles outwardly therefrom, and a step or table rigidly secured to the horizontal arm of one bracket and adjustably attached tothe opposite bracket, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. Adetachable foot-rest for a chair, consisting of parallel longitudinally-slotted perpendicular brackets having their inner faces adapted to the contour of the chair-legs, horizontal arms attached to the upper end of said brackets extending at right angles outwardly IOO therefrom, an inwardlyprojcctin g slotted auxy ii ceceni liary arm attached to one of the main arms, and a step or table rigidly secured to the hori- Zontal arm of one bracket and adjustably attachcd to the opposite bracket, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
3. In a detachable t'ootrest,the combination, with parallel brackets consisting of a perpendicular longitudinally-slotted body having a longitudinal scniicircular groove upon the inner face and horizontal outwardly-extending arms secured at the top, of an auxiliary hori- Zontal arm attached to the main arm of one bracket provided with a longitudinal slot7 and a table or step rigidly secured to one ol' said brackets and adjustably attached to the auxiliary arm ofthe opposite bracket, as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a detachable foot rest for a chair7 the combination, with parallel brackets consisting of a perpendicular longitudinallyslotted body having a longitudinal scinicircnlar groove upon the inner `face and horizontal outwardlyextending arms secured at the top, of an auxiliary horizontal arm attached to the main arm of one bracket provided with a longitudinal slot, a table or step rigidly secured to one of said brackets and adjnstably attached to the auxiliary arm 'of the opposite bracket, and a bolt passing through said slots in the body of the brackets provided with a head upon one end and a wing-nut upon the other, substantially as and for the purpose Specified.
