TENSION DEVICE FOR USE IN WIRE FENCE MAKING,
No. 890,617. Patented Oct. 2,1888.-

AUBREY RICHARDSON, OF OHILLIOOTHE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HENRY \VILLIAM FISOHBAOH, OF ROSS, OHIO.
TENSION DEVICE FOR USE IN WIRE-=FENCE MAKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 390.617, dated October 2, 1888.
Application filed August 4, 1888. Serial No. 281,943.
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUBREY RICHARDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chillicothe,in the county of Ross and State ofOhio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tension Devices for Use in Wire- Fcnce Making; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures ot'reierence marked thcreon, which form apart of this specification.
My invention relates to Wire-fence making, and its objects are, first, to provide a portable clamp capable of joinder to a fixed object to hold the wire firmly during manipulation; second, to hold a series of wires with uniform pressure and tension, so that they shall be equally twisted about the pickets upon completion of the operation, and, third, to obtain these ends with structural simplicity and economy. I accomplish these purposes by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of my clamp in position on a post or other suitable fixed object, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the clamp.
Heretofore in twisting wires about pickets it has been difficult to subject all the wires to the same operation at the same time with equal tension, pressure, and effect. This was because, on the one hand, a portable device, however heavy, has measurably yielded to the strain of the operation, and thus produced an unequal effect on the wires, while,on the other hand, a fixed device is too expensive, being serviceable in onelocality only. The purpose (No model.)
of myinvention is therefore to provideaportable device capable of joinder to a fixed object, so as to have all of the advantages of the one and none of the objections of the other.
The counterpart angles A B are perforated to admit the threaded bolts G, whereon the clamping-nuts 9 work. The angle A has an arm,A.,integrally projecting therefrom, which is hollowed to accommodate a series of wires, F, and perforated to permit the passage of bolt E, over whose threaded end a platen, O, having a similar series of grooves, is located,
which is surmounted by a bent spring, D,-
whose tension is regulated by the wing-nut 6, working on the bolt E.
It will be understood that the angles ABin practice encircle a post, H, and derive steadiness from the support. The pickets can then be turned between the wires without dislocating the clamp, thus producing a common effect on all the Wires.
Having thus fully described my improvements, what I claim is- As a new article ofmanufactu re, the device herein described, consisting of the counterpart angles A B, perforated to accommodate threaded bolts G, the former having an integral arm, A, projecting laterally therefrom, perforated to pass a bolt, E, and hollowed to accommodate a series of wires, F, firmly held by the'grooved platen 0, having a spring, D, thereon regulated by wing-nut e.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUBREY RICHARDSON.
