Description

UNITED STATES 'PATENT OFFICE."
JAMES r. Hannon, or WASHINGTON, DISTRICT oi COLUMBIA.
FOLDINGTA'ND RULING PAPER.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 39,045, daiedJ une 30, 1863.
To all whom it may concern.- i
Be it known that I, JAMES P. Hannon, lof Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and Improved Mode ot' (hitting, Ruling. Folding, and Rolling Letter-I`a per; and I do hereby declare that the folli" ing is a-full and exact descriptionthereof, ret"- erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters-'of reference marked thereon.
The object of' my invention is to provide a sheet of letter-paper so ruled as to be convenient for folding and portable without dama-ge. To accomplish this object, I ina-ke a sheetof indefinite length, as represented'in Figures 1 and .2- of the. accompanyingdrawin-gs, Fig. 1.
l showing one side and Fig. 2 the other 'side ot' the sheet. Connnenci'ng at p in' Fig. il, I rule the paper, as shown in the drawings to s. Leaving blankthe space between's ant a, I- again rule the'paper, as before, from a to b. Leaving blank the space from b to o, I 4again rule, as before, from c to d. If'I want a sheet' linger than that shown in the drawings, I lcut the paper to any desirable length and repeat -the above described process of ruling until the sheet is filled. In folding, the entire sheet lo i` placed against e, the fold occurring between It and k.' 'Ihen 'd' is placed against c, the foldV occurring between b and o. 'Ihen sis put againstp, having the blank or unruled space between s and wall on the outside, and when put into the .envelope safely securing all the Writing from being seen.
Figs. Sand Lrepresent the usual evelope, nhich I make ofA sizes te'suitmy different sizes of writing-paper.
paper for the purpose vof having it compact, convenient for carrying, and safe from injury. In the sectional view shown the oran ge-colored circle B is a section of a roller of wood or other material around which the paper is rolled, as.
shown at m' r r r, and secured by a string tied at A. This method'of rolling and securing theirl paper, to which I have especiallyadapted the size and shape of the sheetsvand the ruling of the-paper, is ot particularimportance, as it eti'ectualy secures the paper from being crushed or ruinpled, and renders it very con.
venient for packing and carryingin a knapsack, haversack, or carpet bag. Designed with especial reference to' thev .Wants otthe vsoldier in the held, ,it will, nevertheless, be ot' equal value to any other class ofpersons whose business calls theni to travel.
I would call attention to the fact that my inventionsupplies to the soldier or traveler not 'only a convenient, but an economical articlcot' letter-paper, for from the manner i-n which it is out and ruled it is evident that any quantity which may be desired for immediate use maybe cut from the-endet the' sheet without injury to what isleft, thereby preventing the necessity'ot' consuming a greater amount of paper than you :actually need, as is fre lquently the case where paper is folded, as it ordinarily. is, in double sheets.
What I claim as my -invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
`1. "Ihe ruling and folding, Figs, l and 2, substantially as set forth. I
e2. The rollin g or paekin g, las' described, and as shown inv Fig. 5.
3. The cutting of the paper ili-to-the`-form shown in Figs. l and 2,-in combination with the ruling and folding shown in said Figs. 1
and 2', substantially as described.
