Panorama/rescues.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,410, dated October 2, 18188.
Application filed January 16, 1888. Serial No. 260,845.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Tnorrns H. STAFFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ooucord, in the county of Merrimac and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of pencil-sharpeners having two cutters calculated to make a drawing out on opposite sides of a pencil.
The invention consists of a hinged frame provided at its free ends with hinged cutters carrying guide-rolls adapted to gage the cut.
The accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, clearly illustrate the devlce.
Figure 1 is an elevation. Fig. 2 is a view of the left side of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 an elevation showing the reverse side of Fig. l; and Fig. 4 shows a detached perspective view of one of the cutters.
Like letters indicate corresponding parts.
This entire device may be stamped from sheet metal (preferably steel) bent into the desired form and riveted together, as shown, one of the hinged parts A being provided with a hook, a, made somewhat in the form of a shield, for hanging the device on the vest pocket, and the other is provided with aleverspring, a, either formed integral therewith or soldered or riveted thereto, its free end being adapted to bear upon the top of the opposite part A and serving the purpose of holding the said parts A A closed against each other.
To the free ends of the parts A A are attached hinged cutters B, each of which is provided forward of its cutting edge with rolls 0, which rest upon a pencil while being sharpened. These rolls O are carried upon a shaft, 0, mounted at either end in arms 1), formed for this purpose upon the cutters B. A hole, Z), is made in each arm I) at any desired point, through which the rivets D, connecting the cutters to the hinged frames or parts A A, are passed.
The cutting-edges b of the hinged cutters B may be ground parallel with the roll 0, or on an an gle therewith, as represented in the d rawings. The latter form I consider preferable, as they do their work more easily while pass ing over the pencil at an angle.
No particular form for the hinged parts A A is essential, providing that their construe- (No model.)
tion is such as to admit a pencil between them,
as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, in which position. a pencil is held when not in use by the pressure of the cutters. \Vhen in Opera tion, however, the pencil is inserted between the cutters B, as seen in Fig. 1, in which View the end of a pencil is shown in dotted lines, and each time the said pencil is withdrawn the opposite sides of the same are cut by the contraction or drawing together of the cutters. The hinged parts A A are also provided with the arms E E, the latter having its end bent at a right angle. as at c, and slotted for the reception of arm E, as seen in Fig. 3, thus serving to strengthen the parts A A at the pivotal connection.
The construction of the cutters B may be somewhat modified, if desired, by changing the position of the rolls 0 to the rear instead of forward of the cuttingedge of said cutters; or two rolls may be applied, one in front and one at the rear. Either of these constructions will accomplish the object of this particular feature of the invention, however, which is to guide the cutters and somewhat gage their cut.
Having described my inventiomwhatl claim as new, and desire to patent,is-
1. In a pencil-sharpener, the hinged cutterframes and pivotal knives attached to their free end, provided with guide-rolls, all substantially for the purpose set forth.
2. In a pencilsharpener, the pivoted cutter-fram es, swivel-eutters attached thereto and adapted to make a tapering cut on opposite sides of a pencil, and guide-rolls connected to said cutters in a manner calculated to regulate their cut, all arranged substantially for the purpose described.
3. The pivoted cutter-frames, a spring :for inclining them toward each other, swivel-cutters attached thereto adapted to make a tapering cut on opposite sides ofa pencil, and guiderolls secured to said cutters, the cutting-edges of said cutters being ground at an angle with said guide-rolls and in opposite directions one with the other, substantially for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS H. STAFFORD.
