REGBPTAGLB FOR FABRICS.
Patented Sept. 25, 1888 N. PETERS. Pllfloiilhognpher, w? 1 1M110.
CHARLES LEOPOLD EBERHARDT, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
RECEPTACLE FOR FABRICS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,01, dated September 25, 1888 Application filed April 27, 1888. Serial No. 272,095. (No model.) Patented in England December 20, 1887, No. 17,518.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES LEOPOLD EBER- HARDT, of London, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Iteccptacles for Fabrics, (the same having been patented to me in Great Britain under No. 17,518, dated December 20, 1887,) of which the following is a specification.
My improvement is chiefly applicable to fabrics such as embroidery, laces, and similar narrow goods.
I will describe a'receptacle embodying my improvement in detail, and then point out the novel features in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan or top view of a receptacle embodying my improvement, certain parts being shown in section and certain other parts being broken away. Fig. 2 isa vertical section of the same, taken on the line a m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same, looking from the upper side of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates a box comprised in the receptacle. (Here shown as rectangular, although it may be of any other convenient or desirable shape.) In the bottom of the box is a centrally-arranged aperture,a. In this example of my improvement the box is provided internallywith a circularcompartment, a. This compartment is formed by securing cornerpieces a within the box, which corner-pieces have curved or arc-shaped inner-edge surfaces, as shown more clearly in Fig. 1.
The object of providing the box with the compartment a is that it may receive a reel, B, and that the wall of the compartment will operate as a guide to center the reel in the box. This reel is rotary, and upon it is to be wound the embroidery or other material. It comprises, as here shown, a central cylindrical portion, 1), and top and bottom flanges or plates, 1/1). The cylindrical portion 1) is open at its lower end, and the opening therein corresponds approximately to the opening a in the bottom of the box. Secured to the flange or plate I), and extending downwardly within the cylindrical portion 11 of the drum, is a projection, I). By inserting the thumb and finger within the cylindrical portion b the projection b may be grasped and the cylinder rotated.
G designates a cover for the box, which cover in this example of my improvement comprises part of the receptacle. The box is provided upon one side with a vertical slit, 0, and the cover is provided upon one side with a similar slit, 0, which is coincident approximately with the slit 0.
D designates a retaining device for a piece of embroidery or other material, (I. This re t aining device may be made of elastic mate rialsuch, for instance, as india-rubber-and may be secured near its ends to the cover 0 in any suitable manner. The end portion of the embroidery or other material may be passed under the loop of elastic material, as shown.
Upon the side edge, e, of the cover 0, Ihave shown a measure, f. This measure is laid off into divisions of a yard, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3. I may also provide the sides 9 h of the cover with a continuation of the measure shown upon the side 0. In case a cover is not used the measure might be upon the outside of the box.
Vhen it is desired to unwind and measure material from the reel B, the material is drawn out through the slits c c, and by wrapping it around the receptacle the same may be readily measured. Any surplus may be rewound upon the drum by rotating the latter by means of the projection Z I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the particular shape of the box shown, nor to that of the guides for centering the reel or drum B, as these may obviously be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention. I wish it to be understood, also, that I may construct the box and cover in such manner as to receive two or any convenient number of reels for material, and that these reels may be arranged side by side or in any other convenient relation to each other.
The box and cover may be composed Wholly of pasteboard, card-board, or similar material. I am aware that it is old in the art to pro vide a receptacle for fabrics in which is arranged a drum or reel upon which the fabric is wound, said drum or reel being journaled in the top and bottom sides of the receptacle. I am also aware that it is old to provide such receptacles with covers.
I am also aware that it is old in such receptacles to provide a slit or opening therein,
ICO
through which the embroidery to be measured is passed, along the side edge of which slit or opening is arranged a scale by. which the width of the material being drawn from the receptacle may be shown.
I do not herein lay claim, broadly, to any of the above constructions.
By my arrangen'ient I provide a scale or measure extending about the side edges of the receptacle, whereby the length of the material drawn from the receptacle maybe ascertained. This is advantageous because it avoids the necessity for using a tape or a measure arranged along the edge of a counter in a store.
The device which I claim is also advantw geous because it provides guides for the reel, whereby a square box may be used for coutaining the material. In none of the devices to which I have referred is any guide shown for the reel in the sense in which I use that term and which will admit of the use of a square box. A square box is advantageous because such boxes pack better for shipping and because they can be arranged more neatly on a counter or shelf in order to display the goods. Furthermore, they are cheaper to manufacture than are cylindrical boxes.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a receptacle for fabrics, comprising a box anda cover therefor, the box and cover being each provided with an opening upon one side, which openings will be approximately coincident when the cover is in place on the box, of a reel within said receptacle and a measure extending about the side edges of the cover, substantially as specified.
