Description
. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
PETER SHOUDY, OF CANAJOHARIE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,990, dated June 23, 1863.
T0 all whom, t may concern,.-
Beit known that I, PETER SHoUDY, of the village and town of Oanajoharie, county of Montgomery, and State ot' New York, have in- 4vented a new and Improved Washing-Machine for Apparel and other Articles; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to thc annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section through said washing-machine. Fig. 2 represents a vertical cross-section through the same.
A represents the concave circularvshaped wash-box, which is supported by the feet k.
b represents dashers or beaters, the shafts a of which are hung to the horizontal shaft e, the ends of which are supported by the standards j. The prolongations ot' the shafts a serve as handles, by means' of which the dashers are operated. The two faces of the dashers are formed with ribs z', and may be made of slats, between whichthe suds may pass, or
they may be made of solid blocks and have holes m bored through them for that purpose. The lower face of the dashers is circular, couforming in its shape to that of the concave wash-box.
d represents inclined boards, which are secured within the wash-box across from one of the perpendicular sides to the other. They are both inclined toward the center of thc wash-box, and cause the clothes, as they are crowded against their lower sides, to turn and drop over upon said dashers.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The clothes being placed in the wash-box and between the inclined boards d, the box being Iilled with the desired quantity of suds, the dashers b are operated by means of their handles e, and clothes are beaten by the reciprocal motion of the dashers or beaters against the inclined boards d d, and are crowded a; a'nst said. boards, and thus caused to turn and to drop upon said dash ers, thereby chan ging-continuously the position in the different parts of said clothes and exposing all parts to the action of the beaters. By having the dashers perforated the suds during the operation not only pass over but also through the dashers and the clothes which surround them.
Having thus fully described the nature ot my invention, what 1 claim herein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
ln combination with the concave circularshaped wash-box, the oscillating and perforated dashers b, the inclined boards d, substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein described.
May 23, 1863. f
PETER SHOUDY.
