Beit known that we, GEORGE H. BARTLETT, of Short Hills, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, and OBED Paoli, of Rowe,

Franklin county,Massachusetts,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool- Holding Boxes; and we do hereby declare that the followingis a full,clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the aecom- Io panying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to an improved box, tool-holder, or receptacle for auger-bits or similar tools of that kind having a series of separate compartments or cells for each of the several tools placed therein. Abox embodyl lng our invention is made of wood or similar substance, and is provided with a series of 2o elongated cells arranged side by side and parallel with each other, with their open ends at one side or face of the block. The lower ends of the recesses are closed by a bottom piece secured to the lower surface or end of the block, and the recessed cover is hinged to the top of the block for holding the tools in place within the reeesses.

layers or slabs, A A2 A3, secured together side by side by means of glue or otherwise. The slabs A A3, forming the front and rear surfaces of the block, are provided at their inner faces with recesses a a a a3 a3 a3. The intermediate slab, A2, is provided upon one side with reeesses a2 czal and upon its opposite side with recesses at at a4. The recesses a a caz c2 c2 form one set or row of cells or compartments a a a, 6o while the recesses a3 a3 a3 and a a form another set or row of cells or compartments a a a, when the said several layers A ALA3 are secured together. The bottoms of the said several compartments (c a a are, as shown in said Figs. 1 and 2, closed by means of a bottom piece, A", nailed, glued, or otherwise secured to the lower surface of the block A.

The cover B is shown as hinged at one side by hinges b to the block, and is provided at its 7o opposite side with a catch, b', by which it may be held closed.

In constructing a box or tool-holder such as is shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3 the slabs or layers A A2 A3 will preferably be constructed by 75 first grooving longitudinally a long strip or board with grooves of the proper size and shape to form the recesses a/cc3 at, and by then cutting the said board or strip into `lengths suitable to form the said slabs or lay- 8c ers and thereafter securing the same together in the manner above described.

The hinged cover or lid B is provided with a series of holes or recesses, bl b2, in its under surface corresponding in position with the several cells or compartments c a of the block. The said cells a a are made of slightly less depth than the length of the bits or tools, so that the shanks of said tools will extend above the top of the block and will enter 9o the recesses b2 b2 when the cover B is closed. The ends of the shanks will thus project above the blocks when the cover is open, and may be easily grasped for removing the tools separately from the cells. A cover such as is shown in Fig. l may obviously have a single large and shallow recess in its under face in place of the several recesses shown.

It has been proposed heretofore to make a tool-receptacle of the general character herein shown by boring a series of holes side by side in a block of wood to form cells to receive the tools. A construction of this kind is not adapted for general application, for the vreason that the boring of a series of holes side is side is a slow and expensive operation, inasmuch as the holes must be bored one by one, and is a troublesome one by reason of the fact that the holes can seldom be bored straight and parallel with each other,owing to the delection of the boring-tool by the grain of the wood. f

By making the block of three or more grooved layers or slabs, as herein. shown and above described,we avoid the difficulties above mentioned, andareenabled to construct the block in a simple, cheap, and expeditious manner. We claim as our inventionv As a novel article, a tool holder or receptacle consisting of two exterior slabs or layers grooved upon their inner faces and one or more intermediate layers grooved upon both faces, said layers being secured together with the grooves therein opposite each other to form a series of compartments or cells, a bottom secured to the lower end of the slabs or layers, and a cover connected with the upper or opposite ends thereof, said cover being recessed in its inner face to receive the ends of tools which project from the recesses, su bstantially as described.
