HORSE-BOOT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,313, dated August 21, 1888.

Application filed April 14, 1888. Serial No. 270,679.

Be it known that we, CHARLES C. SOHILD, PETER J. Serum), and FRANK L. Scrum), citizens of the United States, residing at Ionia, in the county of Ioniaand State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Goverings for the Hoofs of Horses, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in coverings for the hoofs of horses, used when softening the feet by means of water; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

Figure 1 of the drawings represents a perspective-view of a hoof-covering embodying the invention. Fig. 2 represents a reversed plan of the covering with the heel-pad turned to one side. Fig. 3 represents a rear view of the complete device. Fig. 4 represents a cen tral vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 5 is a side elevation.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates a metallic casing having the shape of the outside of a horses hoof and sufficiently larger than the same. The rear a of said casing is open, and its upper and lower edges, a a respectively, are re-enforced by bending them outward upon themselves, the lower edge being also strengthened by the insertion of the wire B in the fold of metal (L The casing is provided with a series of openings, O 0, adjacent to its upper edge, a second series, D, adjacent to its lower edge, and a third series, E, midway between the former two, which three series extend from end to end of the casing. The casing is preferably of galvanized iron.

F is a lining of sponge secured to the inner surface of the casing by the thread f, which is stitched through openings 0, D, and E, and through the sponge and drawn tight.

G is a pad composed of the leather backing, H, and the sponge lining h, stitched to the leather by the thread h, passing through proper openings in the leather. The said backing has its upper part, 5 made concave to fit against the rear outer surface of the heel of the hoof, and is provided with the flat projeetion 9, extending frontward at right angles (No model.)

from the lower edge of said upper part, which, with the projection g, is kept in shape by the bent looped wire I, held between the two layers of leather forming the backing by the rivets i i.

J J are vertical leather loops, riveted or otherwise secured to the rear surface of the vertical part 9 of the pad, near the opposite edges thereof, and K is a strap passing through said loops. One end of the strap K is secured to the casing A by means of the rivets k, that pass through the two openings E adjacent to the corresponding end opening of the middle series in the casing.

The opposite end of the strap is provided with a series of tongue-openings, in order to engage the buckle L, the strap Z of which is secured by rivets Z to the two openings E, adjacent to the opposite end opening of the middle series.

M M are wires that extend from the point of the projection g to the front portion of the lower edge or casing, where they are secured to rings or straps m, as shown. The device, when buckled upon a horses hoof, will retain water a long time, so that the foot therein can be thoroughly soaked and softened.

\Ve do not wish to be limited to the material to be used in constructing the foot-covering. In some instances the metallic casing may itself be covered with leather.

Having described our invention, we claim- 1. A covering for horses hoofs, comprising a sponge-lined casing having the shape of the hoof, and a sponge-lined pad made separate from the casing but connected thereto, the said pad comprising a vertical portion, 9, an integral horizontal portion, 9, and a wire, 1, arranged in said vertical and horizontal portions to maintain the shape of the pad, as set forth.

2. A covering for horses hoofs, comprising the metallic casing A, having the shape of a horses hoof and sufficiently larger than the same, whereby it may be lined with sponge and the sponge lining stitched to the inside of the casing, said casing being made of a single piece and entirely covering the front and sides of the hoof, and the sponge-lined leather pad G, entirely separate from the metallic casing and covering the rear and bottom of the hoof,

said pad having the sponge lining stitched thereto and comprising the part g, concaved to fit against the rear outer part of the heel of the hoof, and the flat projection g, integral with the party and extended at an angle thereto and fitting under the frog of the hoof, and the strap K, connecting the pad Gto the spongelined casing, as set forth.

3. A covering for horses hoofs, comprising the metallic casing A, having the shape of a horses hoof and sufficiently larger than the same, whereby it may be lined with sponge and the sponge lining stitched to the inside of the casing, said casing being made of a single piece and entirely covering the front and sides of the hoof, and the sponge-lined leather pad G, entirely separate from the metallic casing and covering the rear and bottom of the hoof, said pad having the sponge lining stitched thereto and comprising the part 9, concaved to fit against the rear outer part of the heel of the hoof, and the flat projection g, integral with the party and extended at an angle thereto and fitting under the frog of the hoof, and the strap K,connecting the pad G to the sponge lined casing by having one end connected to one side of the casing, then passing through loops attached to the pad and having its other end adj ustably connected to the outer side of the casing by a buckle, and a wire, I, inclosed within the pad G to maintain the shape thereof.

4. The combination of the casing A, provided with the three series of openings 0, D, and E, having its upper edge bent over outwardly on itself at a, and its lower edge bent over outwardly on itself at a and re-enforced by the wire 13, and the heel-pad consisting of a leather backing and sponge lining attached to the rear of the casing between the ends thereof, substantially as specified.

5. The combination of the casing A, having the openings 0, D, and E, the sponge lining F, the leather backing having the concave upper part, 9, and the lower flat projection, g, kept in form by the wire I and rivets 11. the sponge lining h, the loops J, the strap K, secured by rivets 70 k to the casing, the buckle L, strap Z, and wires M, substantially as specified.
