Description

(N0 Model.)
J. H. HERMANN.
HAND PRINTING ROLLER MAGHINE.
N0. 3338;031. Patented Aug. 21, 1888;
UNITED STATES PATENT nmnn JOHN H. EIERMANN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
HAND-PRINTING ROLLER-MACHINE.
SPECIPICA'IION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 388,031. dated August 21, 1888.
Applic-ation filcd October 25, 1887. Serial l\"0. 253.322. (N0 model.)
T0 all wiwm it mag concarn:
Be itknom1 that I, JOHN H. EIERMANN, a citizen of theUnite States, residing ab the city 0f St. Louis, Stehe of Missouri, have invented a certa-in new and useful Improvemenl: in Hand-Prlnt-ing R0ller-Maclaines, 0f which bhe following is a ful], clear, and exact cleseripbion.
My invention relates t0 improvements in hand-printing roller-machines f01 which Lebters Patent were granted 130 rne bearing date December 7, 1886, N0. 353,670, and has for its ob ject l:o obtain a better modeof dislaribub ing and regnlabing the fl0w 0f the ink onto the printing-band, an(l to prewant the leakage of the ink incldental (more 01 lese) to the handprinting roller-machines of thesaid patent and t0 those in present use.
My invention consists in a novel eonstruction and location of the fonntain or reservoir and roller, combined wlth improved means f0r regnlating the flow of bhe in]; fronn (alle fountein t0 the f0unt-ainmoller.
011 the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of rny improved hand-prinb ing roller machine; Fig. 2, a plan thereof, partly broken away.
Referring t0 Figs. l ancl 2, A represents the printing roller furnished with a rubber er ot;her print-ing band and mounted With its axle G in and between the sides D of bheframework, 130 which is secnred the handle E fox operating and lil't-ing Ehe maehine. These arts of mhe xnachine, with Ehe inking-rollers I J, intermediate distribubing-roller, K, means for securing Ehe prlnting-band to the roller A and for antomatsicall y stopping Ehe rotation of tahe printing-roller A ab the completion 0f it's printing, are similar in eonstruetion and principle to the corresponding parts deseribed and illnstrated in my said previous patent, and therefore need n0 fnrther description.
According 120 my invention the fonntain 01 reservoir F, containing tzhe ink, in lieu of be ing ab the fronl; 0f tahe machine, as in t-he said patent, is fixed horizontally across the rear pa1t of tl1e machine, above the roller A and between the sides D, and tl1e fountain-roller G, in lien 0f oecnpying and constitubing the rear side 0f the fountain, as in the seid patent, is monnted 0n its spindle H,within the founbain F, immediately behin. Ehe front side, a, 0f tl1e lalster, the upper edge of the freut a being level, or thereaboub, with the middle plane of and close 130 Ishe cireumference of the roller G. From its upper edge t;he freut a curves downward and rearward to tahe boitorn Z) 01" the fountain F, so as to form a gradnally=diminishing space between Ehe founbain-roller G und fonntain F from the bott1om b of the latber 170 the upper edge 0f its front side, a. The upper edges of tshe ends c 0f the fonntain F are 011 a level, 01 thereaboub, with the upper parb of the spindle H of the fountain-roller G, the spindle H passing throngh the ends c and taking its bearings in She extended flanged porions e, by which the fonntain F 1s secnred 130 the sides D of the machine; er the spindle H may have it-s bearings in the sicles D, es found mosb suitable.
Over the open top of the founbain F, between the rear d of the latber and its roller G, is placed a plate, f, arranged parallel with the roller G and resting on the upper e lges of bhe ende -c, to which ib is seeured by screws g passing throngh slots h in t;he plate f. The platze f is formed on ibs freut edge wibh reetaangulap shaped tongues i, whieh project horizontally forward over the splndle H in proximity to the ends of the roller G, f0r the pnrpose 0f wiping or seraping the ink fron1- the ende of the fountainroller. By this xneans bhe plate f may be adjusbed for bringing its fronb eclge nearer 150 01 farlzher from the fonntainroller G.
On the spindle H of Ehe roller G, beyond bhe bongues 73 0f the adjusbable platef, are fixed disks er washers j, the circumferences of whieh are in frietional eontacwith Ehe inking-roller I ab all times. By bhis constrncbion the ink is prevented from spreading on the inking-roller snfficient eo run over the ende thereof.
\Vhen the maehine is in Operation, Ehe inking-rollers I andJ are rotabed by their eontaeb witzh tl1e prin'ing-band and commnnlcate rotation 130 the rollers G K, as in hhe said previ- 011s patent, bhe combined arrangernent operabingin sueha man ner that bheink is conveyed. fr0m the fonntain F by the fonntain-roller G onto the inkingroller I, a.nd thence 1:0 bl1e 0ther inking-roller, J, by the intermediate distribnting-reller, K, whereby bbe ink is wenly spread before it passes from the inkingrollers I and J t0 the printingband The advantages of my invention are as follows: firsb, by placing bhe fountain F in the rear, instead of in front 0f the machine, as in the said patent, a. better distribution of the ink is obtained; secondly, by mounting the fountain-roller G within the fountain F, so as t0 be half immersed in the ink, eombined with the special shape given t0 the front a of the fountain F, and wibh the adjnstable platef, with its tongues z, a fluid ink can be nsed exclusively wibhout; leakage fr0m the fonntain Fwhen handling the machine, am], thirdly, by the use of the ontside disks or washers, j, 011 the spindle H of the fountain-roller G a coustant rotation of the latber when in operation is insured.
'1. In a hancI-printing roller-machine, the
2. In a, handprinting roller-xnachine, the
cornbination, wibh the inking-roller, of afountain or reservoir, a founlzain-roll hav1ng ab its ends friction-drivers, und wipers 01 scrapers interposed between the founbain-roll and said and in contacb with said inkingmoller f0r preventing the ink from spreading beyond the end 0f tl1e said inking-roller, of the adj ustable platze having tongues interposed between the frictiomdrivers and the frictionroll, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In tesbimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two wibnesses, tshis 22d day 0f October, 1887.
JOHN H. EIERMANN.
