Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABOHIBALD G. CUMMINGS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MINERAL-CEMENT GRAVEL ROOFING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,580, dated August 7, 1888,
Application filed June 18, 1888. Serial No. 277,448. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AROHIBALD G. CUM- MINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and
State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Composition of Matter to be Used for Roofing, of which the following is a specification.
My composition consists of the following ingredients, combined in the proportions stated, viz: coal-tar forty (40) per cent; coal-tar pitch, five (5) per cent. 5 land-plaster, forty (40) per cent; Portland cement, five (5) per cent; plaster-of-paris, five (5) per cent; sulphur, five (5) per cent. To prepare the same, the tar is first heated to three hundred (300) degrees Fahreheit; then add land-plaster in the above proportion, and when thoroughly mingled by agitation add the plastcr-of-paris, Portland cement, sulphur, and'coaltarpitch, in equal parts, as above provided.
The foundation for this composition is the felt, the same as is commonly used for roofing.
Apply while hot to the surface with a hair brush evenly the thickness desired, after which add a coating of lake screened gravel.
By the use of the above composition, and when properly applied, this roofing will last over twenty years. It is elastic and is not affected by heat and cold; neither will it crack or crumble with cold or melt and run by heat, it being practically fire-proof.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The herein-described composition of matter to be used for new felt or recoating old roofs, consisting of the coal-tar pitch, land-plaster, Portland cement, plaster of paris, and sulphu r, substantial] yin the proportion specified.
