- My invention consists of a composition composed of sand, plaster of Paris, alum, borax, and pine-tar, compounded in the proportions hereinafter described, and applied to a coverin g of felt.
- composition is now ready for use, and is applied in a cold state, by means of a trowel or other suitable means, to a covering of felt previously applied to the roof or surface to be protected.
- a layer of the composition of about thrce-eighths of an inch in thickness is sufficient.
- The'thickness of the coating may, however, be varied as required.
- the roofing thus constructed gradually hardens and sets, and forms a sufficiently-hard coverin g, while itretains a sufficient degree of plasticity to prevent cracking.
- composition is readily and cheaply prepared, and applied without the labor and exrouble of heating the ingredients or the composition, while the application of the composition in a cold state to the felt does not burn and injure the fabric, as it does when applied in a hot state.
- WVhat I claimv as my invention is- The composition for roofing, compoundedof the ingredients, in the proportions, and in the manner described, and applied to'a covering of felt, as hereinbefore set forth.

Description
UNITED STATES WILLIAM W. WILGOX, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROOFING COMPOSITIONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,662, dated May 14, 187:2.
SPECIFICATION.
I, WILLIAM W. W1Loox, of the city of, Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a certain Improvement in Composition Roofing, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a composition composed of sand, plaster of Paris, alum, borax, and pine-tar, compounded in the proportions hereinafter described, and applied to a coverin g of felt.
In preparing my improved composition I take one and one-half bushels preferablyof lake or river sand, one-half of a bushel of plaster of Paris, four pounds of pulverized alum, and two poundsof pulverized borax, and mix thoroughly together. Ithen add to this mixture about sixteen gallons of pine-tar in a cold state, and tho'roughly mix the whole together.
The composition is now ready for use, and is applied in a cold state, by means of a trowel or other suitable means, to a covering of felt previously applied to the roof or surface to be protected.
For ordinary roofs a layer of the composition of about thrce-eighths of an inch in thickness is sufficient. The'thickness of the coating may, however, be varied as required.
I next apply to the roof a coating of gravel, which may be spread over and pressed or partially embedded in the composition layer by means of a trowel, which the consistency of the composition readily permits.
The roofing thus constructed gradually hardens and sets, and forms a sufficiently-hard coverin g, while itretains a sufficient degree of plasticity to prevent cracking.
The composition is readily and cheaply prepared, and applied without the labor and ex pense of heating the ingredients or the composition, while the application of the composition in a cold state to the felt does not burn and injure the fabric, as it does when applied in a hot state.
WVhat I claimv as my invention is- The composition for roofing, compoundedof the ingredients, in the proportions, and in the manner described, and applied to'a covering of felt, as hereinbefore set forth.
Witnesses: WM. W. WILGOX.
J AY HYATT, EDWARD WILHELM.
