E. LEMBERGER.
' WRITING DESK APPENDAGE.
No. 387,082. Patented July 31,1888.
Win05 I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD LEMBERGER, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
WRITING-DESK APPENDAGE.
fiPECIFIG'ATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,082, dated July 31, 1888.
Application filed April 30, 1888. Serial No. 272,382.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD LEMBERGER, a resident of the city of Toledo, in the county of Lucas, State of Ohio, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin WVriting-Desk Appendages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient, inexpensive, and durable receptacle for a sponge, a wiping-cloth, and pen holders, pencils, &c., which can be attached to a desk or table in a manner to be moved beneath the top of the same when not in use, or to swing from beneath the table when desired.
The invention consists in forming from a single wire a three-part receptacle for a spongecup, a horizontally-coiled cylinder, and a depending receptacle for pen-holders, pencils, eraser-s, 80c.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is aside elevation of a complete device, showing also in elevation the sponge-cup removed from the receptacle. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the complete device.
In constructing the device thereis employed a piece of wire of suliicient length to form three coils, the wire being doubled at the cen ter, forming an opening, J, through which a screw, G, is passed, and is screwed into the under side of the top portion of the desk or table, thereby not only holding the device in proper position, but acting as a pivot upon which it may be turned. From the central bend the two wires are extended horizontally, each being bent in semicircular form to form a circle, I), (Fig. 2,) of a size corresponding to the coil to be formed beneath the same. At the point at which the semicircular portions meet the outer wire is formed into a horizontal coil, E, whereby a cylindrical space, 13, is formed for the reception of a wiping-cloth. The wire is then turned from (No model.)
the last inner coil and is carried beneath circle D, at which point it is coiled preferably in the form of an inverted cone, a, of a size to accommodate a receptacle, H, for a sponge. The inner wire is extended to the outer side of the circle D, at which point it is formed into a coil, O, having a bottom, K, secured thereto, by which means a receptacle, F, is formed for pencils, pen-holders, &c.
The device thus constructed is attached to the under side of the top of a desk or table, and can be moved under or from beneath the same, screw G acting as a pivot upon which it turns.
It will be seen that the device is inexpeir sive, convenient, and easily attached to any desk or table. v
, What I clai m,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The herein-described appendage to a desk, consisting of two depending coils and one horizontal coil, in combination with a spongereceptacle contained within one of the depending coils, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The hereindescribed appendage to a desk, comprising a vertical coil and a horizontal coil formed of one portion of a length of Wire, with the remaining portion of wire formed into a depending coil having a closed end, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In an appendage to a desk, a depending coil of wire adapted to be pivotally attached to the same, in combination with a sponge-receptacle fitted within the coil, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The herein-described three-part receptaole, formed of a single piece of wire and comprising a loop for the reception of a pivotscrew, a depending coil provided with a receptacle, a horizontal coil, and a depending coil having a closed lower end, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD LEMBERGER.
