The device employs a cylinder having first and second axially extending bores which are contiguous and which share a common vertical port extending along the common contiguous length. An elongated member is slidable in the first bore. A pair of adjacent thin elongated arms when disposed parallel to each other and the member are slidable in the second bore. These arms are pivotally secured at one set of ends to the member adjacent an end.
In use, the cylinder is somewhat inclined from the vertical and the member is pulled upwards. The book is placed against the cylinder and is opened to the desired pages. The arms are pivoted into position to extend along the pages and hold them open. Support means on the cylinder and pivotable out of the way when not in use are pivoted outward when in use to hold the cylinder in desired position and to support the bottom of the book.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS In the drawings:
FIG. I is a perspective view of the invention;
FIG. 2 is a side view of the invention in use;
FIG. 3 is a view taken along line 33 in FIG. 1; and FIG. 4 is a view taken along line 4-4 in FIG. 1.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring now to FIGS. 1-4, an elongated vertical cylinder has a first axially extending centrally disposed circular bore 12 which dead ends in the bottom portion of the cylinder. A second axially extending bore 14 is contiguous, is substantially smaller in cross sectional area than bore 12 and can define a square or rectangle in cross section. These bores share a common vertical port or opening 16 along their common length.
An elongated circular rod 18 is slidable along bore 12. The top end of the rod has a transverse chamber 20 with a small wall opening 22 communicating therewith. A horizontal pin 24 having an enlarged head 26 is slidable horizontally in the chamber with a portion extending thereout. Pin 24 pivotally secures one set of adjacent ends of arms 28 and 30 to the rod. These arms when disposed vertically side by side are slidable in bore 14. These arms are somewhat flexible and are pivotable in vertical planes.
The cylinder has a vertically elongated outer flattened region 32. An inclined support member 36 extends along the region and is pivotally secured at its upper end as shown at 34 to the cylinder. Member 36 is pivotable in a vertical plane.
The cylinder also has an elongated vertical slot 38 disposed adjacent its bottom end. A second and shorter inclined member 40 is pivotally secured at one end to the bottom end of the slot and can be pivoted between a sortage position at which the member 40 is seated in the slot and a position for use at which member 40 extends outward at right angles to the cylinder.
In use, a book 42 bears against the somewhat inclined cylinder, the bottom of the book resting on member 40, and the pages being held open by the extended arms 28 and 30.
While the invention has been described with detailed reference to the drawings, the protection sought is to be limited only by the terms of the claims which follow.
I claim:
1. A book page holder comprising:
a vertical cylinder provided with first and second contiguous vertical bores which share a common vertical port extending along the common contiguous length;
an elongated vertical member slidable in the first bore;
a pair of adjacent thin elongated arms having corresponding ends pivotally secured to the member adjacent its top ends, said arms when disposed vertically and parallel being slidable in the second bore, the arms being pivotable in vertical planes;
a first elongated support element pivotally secured at one end to the cylinder at a point intermediate the ends of the cylinder, the first element having a vertical position when not in use and being swung to a position extending outward and downward when in use, the first element being pivotable in vertical plane.
2. The holder of claim 1 wherein the cylinder has a vertically elongated flat region in which the first element is disposed when vertically disposed.
3. The holder of claim 2 wherein the cylinder has a vertical slot adjacent the bottom end and including a second elongated support element pivotally secured at one end to the cylinder at the bottom of the slot, the second element having a vertical position at which it is disposed in the slot and a horizontal position at which it extends outward from the cylinder at right angles thereto.
Claims (3)
1. A book page holder comprising: a vertical cylinder provided with first and second contiguous vertical bores which share a common vertical port extending along the common contiguous length; an elongated vertical member slidable in the first bore; a pair of adjacent thin elongated arms having corresponding ends pivotally secured to the member adjacent its top ends, said arms when disposed vertically and parallel being slidable in the second bore, the arms being pivotable in vertical planes; a first elongated support element pivotally secured at one end to the cylinder at a point intermediate the ends of the cylinder, the first element having a vertical position when not in use and being swung to a position extending outward and downward when in use, the first element being pivotable in vertical plane.
