Description

Jan. 16, 1951 E. E. MITCHELL COPYHOLDER Filed Jan. 25, 1950 v INVENTOR. Elder E -Mitchell,
ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 16, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COPYHOLDER Elder E. Mitchell, Washington, D. 0. Application January 25, 1950, Serial No. 140,469
, .2 Claims. 1
This inventionrelates to copy holders.
The prime object of the invention is to provide a copy holder which may be readily and conveniently adjusted-to accommodate sheets of different widths.
A further object of the invention is to provide a copy holder comprising telescopic or slidable sections, so arranged that one of said sections may be horizontally adjusted on a fixed section to accommodate sheets of copy of various widths.
A further object of the invention is to provide a copy holder comprising a fixed section and an adjustable section for accommodating sheets of different widths, with means on the fixed section to support the copy in position after the sections have been adjusted.
A further object of the invention is to provide a copy holder which can readily be vertically adjusted to properly meet the line of vision of the operator using the invention.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means for adjustably supporting the copy holder in a vertical and/r inclined position to meet the line of vision of an operator.
These and other objects and advantages will be brought out in the following specification and particularly emphasized in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved copy holder.
Figure 2 is a central vertical section of the improved copy holder.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail vertical section.
Figure 5 is a detail section on the line 55 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a detail section on the line 6-6 of Figure 1.
In the drawing, 1 indicates a fixed section, and 2 an adjustable section slidably or telescopically fitted over the fixed section I.
The fixed section comprises a back 3, a flange 4 at one side, a lower flange 5, and an upper flange 6. The flange 4 has an inwardly extending rib to form with the flange a guide 1, while the lower flange 5 is formed with an upwardly extending portion 8 and an inwardly extending rib 9 forming a guideway l0, open at one end at II. The flange 6 is formed with a depending rib i2 which forms a guideway 13 open at one end at M.
The adjustable section 2 comprises a back it which slides over the back 3 of the fixed section. The adjustable section is formed with an end flange l6 and a lower flange ll, both said flanges H3 and I! having inwardly extending ribs to provide with the end flange 4' of the fixed section means to confine and hold a copy on the two sections.
The lower flange H of the adjustable section slides in the open end of guideway ID of the fixed section, while the upper edge portion of said adjustable section fits in the open end Id of the guide 6 on the fixed section.
Resilient fingers I9 are secured to the flange 8 of the fixed section and extend up and rearwardly toward the backs of the two sections l and 2 to gently bear on the copy to hold it in fiat position.
The adjustable section is retained in adjustable position by a detent 28 in the rib l2 which engages in any one of the indentations 2! formed in the adjustable section.
The sections are supported on two front legs 22-22 depending from the flange of the fixed section, and a like prop 23 is hinged at 24 to the rear of the fixed section.
The two legs 22-22 and the prop 23 are telescopic and are alike, so that but one will be described in detail.
Each leg comprises a hollow fixed section 25 and an adjustable section 26 which fits in the hollow fixed section, each said adjustable section having a scale 21 to determine the position of the legs when setting up the copy holder.
The adjustable leg section may frictionally engage the inner walls of the fixed section to hold the sections in adjusted position, or I may provide a screw 28 to accomplish the purpose.
In operation, the legs 22 and prop 23 are adjusted to suit the height andangle of the line of vision of the operator. The copy is placed up against the backs of the two sections l and 2, and then the adjustable section 2 is adjusted in the guideways to confine the copy between the end flange 4 and the flange IS, the lower portion of the copy resting in the guide Ill and confined therein.
Obviously, the invention provides a convenient and practical copy holder and one which may be quickly and conveniently adjusted horizontally to accommodate sheets of various sizes and at such angle and height to suit the convenience of the operator.
What I claim is:
1. A copy holder comprising a fixed section having a back wall, an adjustable section slidably mounted on the back wall of the fixed section, the upper edge of the fixed section being bent over the upper edge of the adjustable section to engage the front surface of the latter to form an upper guide for said adjustable section, the lower edge of the fixed section being bent outwardly, beyond the back wall and then bent up vertically and then inwardly, the vertical and inwardly bent portions being spaced from the back wall to form a lower guide for the adjustable section, the lower edge of the adjustable section being bent outwardly from the face of said section and then bent up vertically and in contact with the inner face of the vertically bent up portion of the lower guide on the fixed section, with its upper edge fitting under and engaging the inwardly bent portion of the said lower guide on the fixed section, the vertically bent portion on the lower edge of the adjustable section being spaced from the face of said section to form a pocket to receive the lower ends of sheets of paper supported on the copy holder, and means for locking the fixed and adjustable sections in adjusted position.
2. A copy holder as defined in claim 1, wherein the upper and lower guides on the fixed section are open at one end and the opposite end of said fixed section is bent outwardly and thence inwardly in the longitudinal direction of the guides to form an open pocket corresponding to the pocket formed by the lower guide to receive the sides of sheets of paper placed on the copy holder,
the outer vertical end of the adjustable section for a portion of its length being bent outwardly and inwardly in the longitudinal length of the guides and spaced from the front surface of the adjustable section whereby to receive the opposite sides of sheets of paper supported on the copy holder and means for supporting the copy holder.
