Definitions

  • Prior structures of this type have generally employed two pieces of metal soldered to one another, each of which is provided with an opening and the openings arranged in spaced relation so as to receive projecting levers of the sprinkler. See for example U.S. Pat. Nos. 1,317,629, 1,145,883 and 3,061,016.
  • This invention provides a compact fusible link with a common center opening and a configuration insuring a desirable separation upon fusing of the fusible material of the link.
  • a fusible link for a sprinkler in a fire extinguishing sprinkler system is disclosed which is formed of a pair of metal discs, each of which are provided with oppositely disposed slots and registering raised areas.
  • each of the oppositely disposed slots register to form a central opening in the discs when the same are assembled and soldered to one another.
  • Cold flow of the fusible link is avoided by the mechanical inter-engagement of the raised areas which are so formed as to require the physical separation of the metal discs when the fusible link reaches fusing temperature and thereby insures the positive separation of the link and the freedom of the levers which control the sprinkler.
  • FIG. 1 is a vertical section through a sprinkler showing the fusible link in lever retaining position.
  • FIG. 2 is a section similar to FIG. 1 showing the fusible link immediately following fusion therein.
  • FIG. 3 is a perspective view of a sprinkler with parts broken away and parts in cross section showing the fusible link completely separated permitting operation of the sprinkler.
  • FIG. 4 is an exploded top plan view showing the two metaldiscs of the fusible link.
  • FIG. 5 is an enlarged top plan view of one of the discs seen in FIG. 4.
  • FIG. 6 is a section on line 66 of FIG. 5, and
  • FIG. 7 is an exploded top plan view of a pair of metal discs of modified form of fusible link.
  • the fusible link comprises a pair of identical metal discs 10 each of which has a slot 11 extending into the body of the disc to a point past the center thereof and each of which has a pair of rounded raised areas 12 formed therein together with a plurality of flat raised sections 13.
  • Two of the metal discs 10 are assembled in superimposed relation as seen in FIG. 1 of the drawings with one set of the flat raised sections 13 slightly spacing the discs to permit the same to be readily soldered to one another with a suitable fusible solder.
  • the rounded raised areas 12 nest one within the other and prevent the discs 10 from being moved sidewardly relative to one another until and unless the solder holding the same in face to face engagement fuses as will be understood by those skilled in the art.
  • the fusible link described herein is installed in a sprinkler such as seen in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, the discharge orifice of the sprinkler is closed with a cap 14 and held in closed position by a pair of levers 15 and 16 portions of the levers l5 and 16 being positioned through the center opening in the fusible link as formed by the registering inner ends of the slots 11 therein as seen in FIG. 1 of the drawings.
  • the sprinkler in which the fusible link of the invention is seen installed in FIG. 1 of the drawing includes a threaded base 17, a frame 18 and a deflector 19 all as in a conventional sprinkler and the cap 14 closes the discharge orifice which extends vertically through the base 17 as will be understood by those skilled in the art.
  • FIGS. 5 and 6 of the drawings greatly enlarged detailed views of one of the discs 10 may be seen and it will be observed in FIG. 6 in particular that the flat raised sections 13 are very small in relation to the dimensions of the round raised areas 12.
  • the flat raised sections 13 are preferably formed in the metal of the discs 10 by making dies having the appropriate configurations therein to both punch out slots 11, form the round raised areas 112 and create the flat raised sections 13 simultaneously as willoccur to those skilled in the art.
  • the preferred shape of the round raised areas 12 is almost a half sphere as may be seen in FIG. 6 of the drawings, and the radius of the inner surface of the round raised areas 12 is the same as the radius of the exterior surface thereof so that the same will nest one within the other as hereinbefore described. This results in a thinning of the metal at the edges of the round raised areas 12 as compared with the thickness of the metal in their outermost portions.
  • FIG. 7 of the drawings wherein the length of the slot has been shortened and round apertures formed in oppositely disposed relation thereto.
  • a pair of discs 20 are each provided with a pair of round raised areas 21 and a plurality of flat raised sections 22 and each of the discs 20 has a short slot 23 with a rounded inner end 24.
  • Aperture-s 25 are formed in the discs 20 in oppositely disposed relation to the slots 23 and so positioned that when the: pair of discs 20 are placed in superimposed relation and soldered to one another, the resulting composite fusible link has a pair of spaced openings therethrough, each of the openings being defined by one of the apertures 25 and the inner end of the slots 24 in the adjacent disc.
  • the modification of FIG. 7 can therefore be used with sprinklers having levers projecting to one side of the frame and wherein the ends of the levers are spaced vertically with respect to one another and are thus capable of being received by the dual apertures in the modified form of the fusible link.
  • the fusible link of the modification operates in the same manner as the fusible link of the preferred form of the invention hereinbefore described.
  • a fusible link for a fire sprinkler which may be quickly and inexpensively formed and assembled from two shaped metal discs and that it provides a central aperture for the reception of levers in a sprinkler, at least one of which is positioned on the axial center line of the discharge orifice of the sprinkler.
  • a fusible link comprising a pair of metal members positioned in superimposed relation and soldered to one another, each of the metal members having projecting registering configurations arranged to prevent the metal members from sliding sidewardly with respect to one another and each of the metal members having a slot formed therein from one side thereof, the respective positioning of the metal members being reversed in assembly so that the slot in one of said members extends to one side and the slot in the other of the metal members extends toward the opposite side of the fusible link and so that the inner ends of the slots register and form an opening through said metal members.
