BUTTON.
No. 385,876. Patented July 10, 1888.
INVENTOR:
\A LMM/n WIT ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES EEicE.
PATENT BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,876, dated July 10, 1888.
Application filed February 18, 1888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. PEIROE, of Dover, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, haveinvented a new and use- 5 ful Improvementin Oollar-Buttons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a collar-button having attached means for securing and engaging the necktie; and it consists in a hinged pointed pin and collanbutton combined, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a partly sectional side view upon the linem in Fig. 2 of a separable collarbutton with the pointed pin hinged thereto, and Fig. 2 a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view showing a modified con struction of the invention; Fig. 4,atop view of the same, and Fig. 5 a front view of the hinged pin detached. Figs. 3 and 5 only show the pin in part, and all the figures in the drawings represent the invention upon an enlarged scale.
In Figs. 1 and 2, which show the invention applied to a separable collar-button-that is, a button in which the head or front disk, I), is made capable of separation from the shank c on which the back disk, (I. of the button is secured, as in other separable collar-buttons, or otherwise-the pointed pin 6 is hinged,as at f, to the head or front disk, b, of the button.
In Figs. 3, i, and 5 the button, which need not be a separable one, has its head or front disk, I), made a part in common with the pointed pin a, and is hinged to the shank c at 0 f direct. In each of these cases, however, the pointed pin is a hinged portion of the complete button and the axis of the hinge or pivotf at rightangles or thereabout to the longitudinal axis of the shank of the button. This combined collarbutton and hinged pointed pin is mainly designed to be used in connection with the long neckties in ordinary use.
The attached pin has a twofold object, the

first and principal one being to prevent the tie from slipping up from its place to the top of or above the collar, which is a very eon mon and annoying oecurrence, and the second object being to prevent the tie from slipping or sliding around on the collar, either to one side or the other. To these ends the pin 0 is easily and quickly adjusted when putting on the tie by slipping the pin into the tie as the latter is drawn up to its place. The hinged connection of the pointed pin with the button or some portion tl1ereof,the form ofthe button being immaterial, is a (or the prominent) feature of the invention. This will be apparent from the fact that when putting on the tie, or when sitting down with the tie on, and bending the neck or head and in various other positions of 6 the body, it is necessary for the pin to rock or yield in order to secure its performing its func tion satisfactorily and to prevent the pin from breaking or hurting the person.
This invention essentially differs from a 001- larbutton having an elongated pivoted foot capable of being folded over the necktie-baud to hold the same in place; also, from acollarbutton having an attached hook for the same purpose, and from a mere necktiesupporter having the general outline of the tie,and provided with a perforated and folded tongue for attachment to the shirt, a tieattaching pin, and a pin-securing loop.
By the attachment of the pin to the collarbutton, as described, the invention constitutes what may be termed a collar-button tieholder.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 8 5 Patent, is
The combination, with the back d and tubular shank 0,0f the head I), having a cylindrical extension adapted to enter the said Sllitlllgillld the tie-receiving pin e,which is hinged directly go to the outer side of the head, as shown and described.
