Definitions

  • ABSTRACT The ascension pipe flap is pivotally supported on a shaft that is, in turn, rotatably supported by a portion ofthe collecting main outwardly beyond the ascension pipe.
  • a counterweight and a lever are nonrotatably secured to the same shaft.
  • the ascension pipe lid is connected by means of a first lever to a shaft and a second lever is connected to the same shaft.
  • a telescopic actuator is connected to one end to the lever associated with the ascension pipe flap and at the other end to the second lever associated with the ascension pipe lid.
  • the ascension pipe lid In normal operation, when the ascension pipe is connected to the collecting main, the ascension pipe lid is closed and the ascension pipe flap is opened to permit flow of gases through the ascension pipe to the collecting main.
  • the telescopic actuator When it is desired to close the ascension pipe, the telescopic actuator is retracted and because of the lever and counterweight. the torque required to close the valve flap is less than the torque required to open the ascension pipe lid and the ascension pipe flap first closes. Thereafter continued retraction of the telescopic actuator opens the ascension pipe lid.
  • the telescopic actuator when it is desired to connect the ascension pipe to the collecting main, the telescopic actuator is extended and because the torque for closing the ascention pipe lid is less than the torque for closing the valve flap, the ascension pipe lid first closes and thereafter the valve flap opens.
  • This invention relates to apparatus for sequentially opening and closing the valve flap member and ascension pipe lid of a coke oven ascension pipe assembly and includes an ascension pipe elbow connected at one end to a vertical ascension pipe and at the other end to a collecting main.
  • the ascension pipe elbow has an open end portion connected to the collecting main.
  • a valve member is positioned adjacent to the ascension pipe elbow open end portion and is arranged to close the elbow open end portion.
  • the ascension pipe elbow has an access opening therein above the ascension pipe to provide access to the inner surface of the ascension pipe.
  • a lid member is positioned in overlying relation with the access opening and is arranged to close the access opening.
  • An actuator means is connected to the valve member and the lid member.
  • the actuating means is arranged to sequentially first close the valve member and thereafter open the lid member and first close the lid member and thereafter open the valve member.
  • the actuating means is so connected to the valve member and the lid member that the torque required to open the ascension pipe lid is greater than the torque required to close the valve member so that the valve member first closes and thereafter the ascension pipe lid opens.
  • the lid member is connected to the actuator member by means of a pin extending through an elongated slot in the actuator member. Upon retraction of a portion of the actuator member, the pin is subjected to an impact force because of the slot and the impact force is transmitted to the lid member to loosen carbonaceous material adhesively securing the lid member in the ascension pipe access opening without however, opening the ascension pipe lid.
  • the principal object of this invention is to provide apparatus for automatically and sequentially opening and closing the valve flap and ascension pipe lid in an ascension pipe assembly.
  • Another object of this invention is to provide apparatus for first imparting an impact force to the ascension pipe lid to loosen carbonaceous material adhesively securing the ascension pipe lid to an access opening and thereafter to sequentially close the valve flap and open the ascension pipe lid.
  • the drawing diagrammatically illustrates an ascension pipe with the valve flap in an open position and the pipe lid in a closed position in full lines and the valve flap in a closed position and the ascension pipe lid in an open position in phantom lines.
  • the top of the ascension pipe has an elbow designated by the numeral 12 that connects the ascension pipe to the collecting main 14.
  • the elbow 12 has a first portion 16 connected at its lower end to the ascension pipe 10 and an upper access opening 18 which is normally closed by an ascension pipe lid 20 when the ascension pipe 10 is connected to the collecting main 14.
  • the elbow section 16 has a side opening 22 that mates with an opening 24 in a second section 26 of elbow 12.
  • the elbow second section 26 has a lower outlet opening 28 that connects the elbow 12 to the collecting main 14.
  • a valve flap 30 is arranged to close the opening 28 in the elbow second section 26 to thus close the passage between the ascension pipe 10 and the collecting main 14.
  • the valve flap 30 is connected to a shaft 32 that is suitably supported by the annular member 34 on the collecting main 14 which provides the opening in the collecting main 14 for the ascension pipe 10.
  • the shaft 32 has end portions extending beyond the annular member 34.
  • An operating lever 36 is nonrotatably secured at one end to the shaft 32 and extends laterally therefrom.
  • a counterweight 38 is also nonrotatably secured to the shaft 32 for rotation therewith. Both the lever 36 and the counterweight 38 are positioned on the shaft outside of the ascension pipe elbow 12. With this arrangement, rotation of the shaft 32 in a clockwise direction moves the valve flap 30 in a clockwise direction and also the lever 36 rotates in a clockwise direction with the shaft 32.
  • the ascension pipe lid 20 has an upwardly extending connecting member 40 that is connected to lever 42 adjacent one end portion by a pin 44.
  • the other end of the lever 42 is connected to a shaft 46 which is rotatably secured to the ascension elbow section 16.
  • An actuating lever 48 is fixedly secured at one end to the shaft 46.
  • An actuator generally designated by the numeral 50 has a cylinder portion 52 and a rod portion 54.
  • the lower end portion of the cylinder 52 is connected by means of a pin 56 to the end of actuating lever 36 associated with the valve flap 30.
  • the rod 54 extending from the cylinder 50 has an end portion 58 with an elongated slot 60 therein.
  • a pin 62 is connected to the end of actuating lever 48 and is positioned in the elongated slot 60 of rod 54.
  • valve flap 30 and lid 20 may be opened and closed remotely.
  • the above described arrangement now provides apparatus for sequentially closing the valve flap 30 and thereafter opening the lid member 20 and conversely closing the lid 20 and while the valve flap 30 is closed thereafter opening the valve flap 30.
  • the lever arrangement and its connection to the actuator 50 is such that the torque required for opening the ascension pipe lid 20 is greater than the torque required for closing the valve flap 30 and the torque for opening the valve flap 30 is, in turn, greater than the torque required for closing the ascension pipe lid 20.
  • the pin member 62 positioned in the elongated slot 60 upon retraction of rod 54, first moves into abutting relation with the outer portion of the slot 60 to apply an impact blow to the lid 20 to loosen any carbonaceous material adhesively securing the lid 20 in the ascension pipe opening 18.
