Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT NICOL, JR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SHOE OR OTHER BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 384,462, dated June 12, 1888.
Application filed June 25, 1886. Serial No. 206,230. (No model.) i
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT NIooL, Jr., of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoe and other Brushes,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptiou.
This invention more particularly relates to daubing, or shoe and top-knot, or other like brushes, in which the bristles project from the under side or face of the handle at or near its end. In brushes of this description the bristles are usually carried by a wooden projection, known as a top-knot, sawed to form and drilled by hand or machinery to hold the tufts or bristles, after which they are varnished and finished by hand and veneered.
The object of my invention is to save this labor and expense in the construction and finishing of the top-knot; and the invention consists in a top-knot or bristles carrier made of metal, hard rubber, wood pulp, or other suitable material capable of being stamped, turned, pressed, east, or molded into form with the holes for the bristles formed in it during the process of stamping or casting, &c., the article, and otherwise of peculiar construction, which adapts it to be readily attached to its place on the handle of the brush, and furnishes an annular flange or ring to keep the bristles from spreading without having recourse to a separate ring for the purpose, substantially as hereinafter shown and described.
Reference is'to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a partly-sectional longitudinal view of a daubing or shoe brush embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a face view of the topkuot or bristles-carrier detached, and Fig. 3 a transverse section of the same upon the line 00 a; in Fig. 2.
A is the top-knot, of any suitable metal, hard rubber, &c., made by casting, turning, or molding, &c., in the form of a dished circular body, consisting mainly of an inner or back disk, b, having perforations 0 left in it during the process of stamping, molding, or forming the article for reception and retention of the bristles by it, and a pendent face ring or flange, d, encircling the cluster of perforations.
It also has a back rim, 6, to keep the disk I; at a suitable distance from the under side of the handle B of the brush, for projection of the inner or double ends of the tufts f of bristles back of the disk, to prevent them from interfering with the attachment of the top-knotas by a screw, g, or otherwise-to the handle. The ring or flange (I, made in one piece with the body of a top-knot, serves to prevent the bristles from unduly spreading, and dispenses with a separate ring for the purpose. This top-knot not only saves the labor and expense which is attendant upon the con- 6 struction of a wooden top-knot as heretofore made, but it may readily be attached to any suitable brush-handle, and admits of the easy insertion of the bristles within it--that is, through the perforated disk in or near its back, and the'whole top-knot is made of a single piece, instead of several pieces, as heretofore usual, especially when a ring is provided to prevent the bristles from spreading. When the independent top-knot or bristles-carrier is 7 turned from a solid piece of wood, the holesin which the bristles are inserted .may be made by drilling, boring, or burning. A stamped, pressed,or cast top-knot,however,is preferred. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The within described top-knot'or bristies-carrier for brushes, made in one piece, and consisting of a disk, I), having perforations c in it, and of aface flange or ring, (I, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The within-described top knot or bristles-carrier for brushes, consisting of the disk b, having perforations c in it, the face flange 0 or ring (1, and the back rim, 6, all integral with one another, essentially as and for the purposes specified.
3. The oombination, with thehandle B of the brush, of the independently-attached top-knot 9 5 or bristles-carrier A, composed of the perforated disk b, face flange or ring d, and back rim, e, these latter integral with one another, substantially as described.
