Description

T. A. ENGLISH. STAFF 0R HANDLE CONNECTION.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 22,1920.
Patented May I6, 1922.
i STTES THOMAS A. ENGLISH, 0F NORTH ALBANY, NEW YORK.
STAFF OB HANDLE CONNECTION.
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. ENGLISH, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a. Staff or Handle Connection, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a staff or handle connection or attachment particularly ap plicable to brushes but capable of application to similar articles.
A prime object is to provide an exceedingly simple, efficientand lowest priced article for this purpose.
Another object is to provide a means of this character which may be readily and automatically adjusted without removing the brush from the floor.
A further object is `to provide the means essentially of two metallic parts pivoted to gether, such parts having interfitting means and one part engagingthe other at thei periphery to relieve the pivot of undue strain.
`With the above and additional objects which will hereinafter appear, in view, the invention has been embodied in one preferred form as will now be described and illustrated in accompanying drawings.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a scrub brush and handle connected by means of my improvements, and
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional View through the improvements.
Referring specially to the drawings, a handle or staff 3 is provided for an article such as a scrub brush 4. Scrub brush 4 is to be taken as a diagrammatic illustration since the invention is applicable to many similar articles.
The improvements essentially comprise two yieldable metallic members A and B each having a plate or disk like portion 5 through the center of which a rivet 6 passes and is secured to connect the members. Disks 5 have depressions arranged inthe path of a circle concentric with the pivot so as to provide a series of projections T on one of the disks to enter a series of depressions 8 on the other disk.
Section A has a tang 9 through which screws 10 may be passed to fasten same to the head of brush 4. Tang 9 connects to the disk of this section4 through a post 1l,

integral with the tang and post. The edge or periphery of the disk of this section A is concentric with the pivot, as at 12.
Section B has a stud 13 bent outwardly at a portion 14 to rest on. and follow wall 12, in order to relieve the pivot of undue strain. Stud 13 is integral with the disk of this section and also with a ferrule 15 which receives the staff 3 as shown.
In use, the brush is operated over the floor through movement of the handle or staff 3 in the usual manner. Vhenever it is necessary to change the angle of the staff, 'the device does not have to be lifted from the Hoor but the handle may be simply depressed so that the plates may move relatively on the pivot 6 with the projections 7 moving out of the depressions 8, advancing one depression at a time and clipping thereinto, due to the yieldable metal of which they are constructed. Parties of various heights may use this article with ease as the handle may be adjusted to any desired angle in the manner stated. I/Vhen desired the adjustment may be facilitated by holding the brush 4 to the licor by the aid of the foot. Since the portion 14 engages and rides on the edge 12, the pivot is effectively relieved of undue strain.
Since merely the preferred embodiment has been illustrated and described, changes in the details falling within the spirit and scope of the appended claim may be made.
I claim A staff or handle connection, in combination with a brush, a sleeve secured to the handle having an extension, a disk formed integral with the extension and offset there from, an annular series of recesses formed in said disk, a plate secured to the brush head having a vertical extension, a disk formed integral therewith of the same diameter as the first mentioned disk. depressions arranged in the second mentioned disk forming projections fitting in the recesses of the first mentioned disk, and a pivot pin connecting the said disks, the latter having sufficient resiliency to permit adjustment of the handle upon application of force.
In testimony whereof, I have affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS A. ENGLISH. Witnesses W. M. F ISK, RAYMOND CARRIER.
