Abstract

A clamp especially for holding a pattern on a workpiece has a substantially L-shaped bracket formed by a pair of longitudinal legs. One or more studs are arranged extending perpendicularly from one of the legs and codirectionally with the other leg for being inserted into a workpiece and anchoring the bracket on same, while a screw-threaded rod threadingly engages a threaded bore provided in the other leg for engaging a pattern and holding same on the workpiece. An element having a thickness corresponding to that of the pattern is used to space the other leg from the workpiece.

BACKGROUND OF THEINVENTION- 1. Field of the Invention This invention relates generally to a clamp, and particularly to a clamp for holding a pattern on a workpiece such as a door unit and the like.
2. Description of the Prior Art My prior application Ser. No. 289,363, now U.S. Pat.
No. 3,811,666 filed Sept. 15, 1972, discloses the installation of an insert in a door unit by initially arranging a pattern on the door and cutting out a portion where the insert is to be installed. The pattern must be held firmly on the door as by nails or clamps.
SUMMARY or THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to provide a clamp anchorable to a workpiece for facilitating holding of an article on the workpiece.
Itis another object of the present invention to provide a clamp anchorable on a doorunit for holding an insert cut-out pattern on the unit.
These and other objects are achieved according to the present invention by providing a clamp having: a substantially L-shaped bracket formed by. a pair of perpendicular legs; at least one stud, and the like, provided on one leg for inserting into the workpiece and anchoring the bracket thereto; and a threaded rod threadingly engaged in a threaded bore provided on the other leg for engaging a pattern-and holding same on the workpiece.
According'to an advantageous feature of the present invention, an element having a thickness corresponding to that of the pattern is used to space the other leg from the workpiece a distance equal to the'thickness of the pattern.
=These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED l EMBODIMENTS FIG. of the drawings shows a pair of clamps 10 acopening in door 14 by cutting in the illustrated manner is better disclosed in my copending application Ser. No. 289,363, now US. Pat. No. 3,811,666 filed Sept. 15, 1972.
Although cutout 24 is illustrated as an oval, it is to be understood that any suitable geometric shape may be cut.
Referring now to FIGS. 2 to 4 of the drawings, each clamp 10 includes a bracket 26 which is substantially L-shaped and formed by a pair of longitudinal legs 28 and 30 of suitable length. These legs 28, 30 are connected together at a vertex 32, and are arranged extending perpendicularly from one another in order to form the L-shaped bracket 26. I
Bracket 26 is anchored to, for example, jamb 18 (FIG. 2) as by a plurality of studs 34 arranged extending perpendicularly from leg 30 and codirectionally with leg 28 for being inserted into jamb 18. While three studs 34 have been illustrated, it is to be understood that as few as one stud may be employed as desired and considered necessary. A small, generally rectangular,'-element 36 having a. thickness equal to the thickness of pattern 12 is advan- 14, or more specifically jamb 18, a distance sufficient to pass over the upper surface of pattern 12.
A rod 38 provided with a conventional, flat handle 40 and conventional screw threads is threadingly arranged in a bore or opening 42 provided in a portion of leg 28 spaced from vertex 32. Opening 42 is also provided with screw threads with which the screw threads of rod 38 threadingly engage to permit advancement and re traction of rod 38 relative to leg 28 and pattern 12 as is well known and conventionalfor such screw threads. By advancing rod 38 toward pattern 12 by turning. the rod in opening 42, pattern 12 will be engaged by the end of rod 38 spaced from handle 40 and held on door 14, or any other suitable workpiece.
A boss 44 may be provided on leg 28 surrounding opening 42 and forming an extension of the latter in order to provide a longer length of screw threads to be engaged by the'threaded'portion of rod 38. This additional length of threaded opening will decrease the likelihood of the threads stripping, and the like.
In addition'to anchoring bracket 26 to jamb 18 by means of the one or more studs 34, a hole 46 may be provided extending through leg 28 and element 36 as illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 3 .of the drawings, and a conventional fastener such as a nail 48 may be passed through hole 46 and driven into jamb 18 at a right angle to studs 34 to provide additional rigidity to the anchoring of bracket 26 on jamb 18.
As will be appreciated from the above description and from the drawings, a clamp according to the present invention is especially suited for facilitating the holding of an article such as a pattern on a workpiece such as a door unit.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those 10 skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A clamp for holding a pattern on a workpiece,
comprising, in combination:
a. a bracket, the bracket being substantially L-shaped and including a pair of longitudinal legs connected together at a vertex and arranged extending perpendicularly from one another;
b, means for anchoring the bracket relative to a workpiece, the means for anchoring including at least one stud arranged extending perpendicularly from one of the legs and codirectionally with the other of the legs for being inserted into a part of a workpiece for anchoring the bracket to the workpiece; c. means for engaging a pattern and holding same on a workpiece; and
d. an element having a thickness corresponding to the thickness of an article to be clamped bieng attached to the bracket adjacent the vertex of the legs and being'arranged for spacing the other of the legs from the workpiece a distance equal to the thickness of the pattern.
2. A structure as defined in claim 1, wherein the means for engaging includes a rod provided with screw threads and a screw-threaded bore provided on the other of the legs, the rod threadingly arranged in the bore.
3. A structure as defined in claim 2, wherein the element and the other of the legs are provided with a hole arranged extending through same for receiving a fastener.
4. A structure as defined in claim 1, wherein the element and the other of the legs are provided with a hole arranged extending through same for receiving a fastener.

Claims (4)

1. A clamp for holding a pattern on a workpiece, comprising, in combination: a. a bracket, the bracket being substantially L-shaped and including a pair of longitudinal legs connected together at a vertex and arranged extending perpendicularly from one another; b. means for anchoring the bracket relative to a workpiece, the means for anchoring including at least one stud arranged extending perpendicularly from one of the legs and codirectionally with the other of the legs for being inserted into a part of a workpiece for anchoring the bracket to the workpiece; c. means for engaging a pattern and holding same on a workpiece; and d. an element having a thickness corresponding to the thickness of an article to be clamped bieng attached to the bracket adjacent the vertex of the legs and being arranged for spacing the other of the legs from the workpiece a distance equal to the thickness of the pattern.
2. A structure as defined in claim 1, wherein the means for engaging includes a rod provided with screw threads and a screw-threaded bore provided on the other of the legs, the rod threadingly arranged in the bore.
3. A structure as defined in claim 2, wherein the element and the other of the legs are provided with a hole arranged extending through same for receiving a fastener.
4. A structure as defined in claim 1, wherein the element and the other of the legs are provided with a hole arranged extending through same for receiving a fastener.
