Abstract
952,301. Self-tapping screws; working by rotary tools. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc. Nov. 30, 1962 [Dec. 1, 1961], No. 45407/62. Headings B3N and B3V. [Also in Division F2] A thread-forming screw, for use with wood or sheet metal or a thread-forming nut, has one thread 24a of greater height than another thread 26a. The screw has a four-sided pyramidal point, the sides of which are concave and identical, Fig. 3 (not shown), or it has a foursided point 18a with two adjacent long sides opposite two adjacent short sides so that there is a face 46 formed between each pair of unequal sides 28a, 30a. The point extremity is blunted for strength. As shown, there may be a second low thread 44 but there may be three or more threads of different heights. The height of a thread may vary in some turns. The screw shank may have a taper and the thread turns need not be spaced with shank surface between, as shown. The leading end may be slotted to provide a cutting edge.
