SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 384,334, dated June 12, 1888.

Be it known that I, J ACOB J. REIOHENBACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gentralia, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Display-Frames, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in display-frames, such as are employed in stores to support articles of wearing-apparel, &c., which are offered for sale, and it has special reference to frames which are adapted to display shoes and like articles of footwear.

The object of the invention is to provide a rest which is simple, strong, and cheap, and will hold the shoe firmly in a position to display its merits.

The invention consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement of devices, fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved rest. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view of the display-frame. Fig. 4 is a side view of the same. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the rest and devices for attaching it to the frame. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the collar.

Referring by letter to the drawings, the shoerest ais provided with a flat bearing-surface for the sole and heel, and it is preferably made of wire bent approximately to the shape of the shoe. One length of wire composes the outer frame, I), the rear ends of which terminate in spring-arms c c, which are provided with up turned jaws d d. The rear ends of these arms are separated a short distance and the j aws are bent inward slightly to enable them to engage the heel of the shoe firmly. The inner frame, e, is arranged between the sides of the outer frame, and it consists of the heel-loop f, the slot or socket g, which is located at the narrowest portion of the rest, and the forward-extending spring-arms h h, which consist of the converging portions 1' and the lateral extensions k. The ends of the spring-arms are provided with inwardly bent jaws Z E, which on gage the soles of the shoe. spectively, by means of metal clips, fine wire wrapping, or solder, and the portions of the inner frame in front of the fastenings a constitute the springer-ms h, and the portions of the outer frame in rear of the fasteningsm constitute the springarms c c. The portions of the sides of the inner frame between the fastenings m and a are drawn together and secured by the fastenings o o, and the portions of the sides between the fastenings o 0 are separated slightly to form the slot or socket 5 above referred to.

It will be seen that the rest consists of two pieces of wire, the outer frame comprising, essentially, a sole-loop and heel-spriugs,and the inner frame comprising, essentially, a heelloop, which is located between the heel-springs, and the toe or sole springs,which extend outside of the sole-loop.

The display-frame A consists of the vertical standard B, having a. horizontal sleeve, O, at its upper end, provided with a set-screw, D, and the movable or adjust-able frame E, c0mprising the vertical and horizontal rodsFand G, respectively. One of thehorizontal rods is mounted in the sleeve C, and the frame is clamped at any desired inclination by the setscrew D, above mentioned.

The horizontal rods are secured to the vertical rods by means of the brackets M, which consist of the tubes N, embracing the vertical rods and having set-screws in their sides to impinge against the rods and hold at the desired point, and the hooks P on the sides of the said tubes and having set-screws mounted therein. The horizontal rods are arranged in the hooks, and the set-screws clamp them therein.

It will be seen that the horizontal rods may be arranged at any desired points of the vertical rods to suit the character of the stock to be displayed, it being at times desirable to have the rods arranged at a considerable dis tance apart, while at other times it is of advantage to arrange them close together.

H represents a collar-,which is adapted to be mounted on one of the rods of the frame, (either vertical or horizontal,) and it is provided with a set-screw, l; and K represents a thumbscrew,which passes through the slot or socket g in the shoe-rest and engages a tapped aperture in a boss, L, which is formed on the side of the said collar. The rest is capable of rotary adjustment around the thumb-screw K, in order to enable the shoe to be arranged in any desired position to display its merits.

Having thus described my invention, I claiml.- In a shoe-rest, the combination of the outer frame, I), open at its rear end and terminating in spring-arms c, and the inner frame, 6, open at its front end and terminating in the spring-arms h, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The within-described shoe-rest, comprising the outer frame, I), forming the sole-rest, and the heel-springs 0, provided with the jaws d d, and the inner frame, 0, secured to the outer frame and comprising the hcelloop f, the forward-extending springarms h h, having the jaws Z Z, and the intermediate loop or socket to enable the rest to be attached to a frame, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. The combinatiomwith the displayframe having the standard B, provided on its upper end with a horizontal sleeve, 0, and the frame having horizontal rods G, one of which is mounted in the said sleeve and locked firmly in position by a set-screw, of the collars adjustably mounted on the horizontal bars and having tapped apertures in their sides, the shoe-rests comprising the outer frames, 12, having spring-arms at their rear ends, and the inner frames having heel-loops, forward-extending spring-arms, and loops or sockets between the same, and the set-screws mounted in the tapped apertures in the collars and engaging the slots or sockets in the shoe-rests, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

4. The herein-described shoe-rest, comprising the two frames b 6, one arranged within the other, each frame having a closed and an open end and each having spring arms orjaws at the open ends, the spring arms or jaws of one frame engaging and sliding u pon the'other frame, as set forth.
