FASTENING FOR OVERSHOES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,650, dated September 8, 1885.

Application filed April 14,1884.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, Lnwrs B. BELKNAP, of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Fastening for Straps, Overshoes, and other Articles, of which the following is afull, clear and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature, in which- Figure 1 shows in perspective an overshoe fitted with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view,-enlarged, of the fastening device. Fig. 3 is a view in vertical section, illustrating its use when applied to the strap of the overshoe. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the fastening. Fig. 5 represents in perspective the fastening when not hinged to the clamp. Fig. 6 represents in section the fastening-hinge and the fastening-plate, which is not adjustable. Figs. 7, 8, and 9 show the method of forming a ballbutton which is adapted for use in connection with my fastening.

The invention comprises a fastening device having yielding sides for receiving and holding a button or other similar article,and which, in this respect, is like ihat described in the Letters Patent No. 260,050, granted Wm. S. Richardson, combined with an adjustable fast ening attachment, clamp, or buckle, whereby it is adapted to be secured to a strap or other similar device, in amanner to be movable thereon at will.

In the drawings the improvement is shown applied to the strap of an overshoe; but it may be used in any other connection or with any other form of strap without departing from the spirit of the invention. Any suitable form of buckle or clasp may be used; and I have shown in the drawings the socketarm extended backward, increased in width, and having wings which are bent downward from the sides, parallel with each other, to form bearings for the clamping-jaw, which is adapted to grasp the strap and clamp it to the plate. There is also arranged to extend across between the arms a bar, which prevents the end of the strap from being used to disengage the jaw.

shown curved to receive a special button, I); but of course it is obvious that the yielding sides may have any other shape, especially if the button or device which they hold is made to correspond thereto, the office of the yielding sides being simply to hold by embracing the sides of the button or other device at a place of less diameter than that which is inclosed by the socket. 1

a is the arm extending from the socket and connecting it with the clasp c. The plate 0 of the clasp may be integral with the arm a", or it may be made separate therefrom and attached thereto by a rivet, or in any other suitable way; or the arm a may be hinged there to. (Sec Figs. 2, 3, and i.) It has the side flanges or wings c, which are bent at right angles to the plate, and between which is the space 0 for the reception of the strap 0. To these arms is pivoted, by the pivot 0 the jaw 0 which comprises the cross plate 0 and the teeth a. A bar, 0 also extends across the space between the two wings, and is fastened thereto, and holds the end of the strap from contact with the jaw.

This invention is applicable for use in conhection with straps of any character-garters, other articles of wearing-apparel, &c.

The socket-fastening, when used upon the straps of over and other shoes, should have its opening facing the shoe, as shown in Fig. 1, and preferably should be hinged to its holder. It is moved on the strap to its proper position to he used with the button, and secured thereto by the fastening device, and then employed in the manner set forth in said patent. The clasp is not moved on the strap thereafter until it is desirable to again adjust the socket in relation to the strap and button. For other uses this position of the socket in relation to the holder may be maintained; but for some purposes it will be desirable to have the socket-opening face outward; and while for many places it is preferable to make the socket movable, yet in some instances the socket may be stationary and the button be attached to a clasp, clamp, or buckle, so as to be movable at will for the purpose of adjustment.

1, do not confine myself to this especial form of fastening device, but may use any of the numerous forms of clamps or buckles for supporting the socket and for providing it with the adjustment named. The part Z), preferably, is formed in the same manner that the ball member of the fastening device described in the Letters Patent No. 276,714 is formed, with the exception that a portion of the arm I) is turned back upon itself to form an eye, If. This eye is adapted to project through a hole in the strap or material to which it is fastened, and. is held thereto by means of any suitable button-fastening passed through the same.

I do not confine myself in the use of this invention to a button such as I have described, but may use any other suitable button or similar device having a shape adapted to be embraced by the yielding sides of the socket and held or locked in place by their pressure thereon.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a fastening device comprising a socket having yielding sides, substantially as specified, and adapted to receive and hold a ball or other fastening, and a strap-clamp or other similar strap-fastening device, to which the socket is permanently fastened, and by which it is adapted to be adj ustably secured to a strap, all substaniiall y as and for the purposes described.

2. The combination, ina fastening, of a socket having yielding sides of the character described and a strap-clamp or similar strapfastening device, substantially as and for the purposes described.

3. The combination of a strap with a strap receiving and holding clamp, or other similar strap-fastening device, and a socket of the character specified, attached to said clamp, all substantially as and for the purposes described.

4. In a fastening, a strap-clamp or other similar strap fastening device, the arm a fastened thereto, and a socket of the character specified, adapted to receive a ball or other member of a fastening device, and carried by said arm a all substantially as-and for the purposes described.

5. The combination of a fastening comprising the strapclamp or other similar strapfastening device, a socket of the character specified, fastened to said clamp, and the ball or button b, all substantially as and for the purposes described.

6. In a fastening device, a socket of the character described, hinged to its support, as

specified, to provide it with a swinging movement in relation thereto, all substantially as and for the purposes described. 7
