2 Claims, 5 Drawing Figures PLASTIC ROLLER WITH ATTACHED ADDITAMENTS TO SET HAIR This invention relates to the use of plastic cylindrical rollers to set hair, modified with the addition of pushin and pull-out denticled outer rings located at both ends of said roller. These outer rings or bearings will assure a firm setting of the hair without the use of any other attachment such as pins, clips, or grips. These rings are a part of the completed roller limiting its inanipulation when rolling hair to a push-in and pullout" motion.
The advantages of this roller, made entirely out of plastic, will be: to avoid damaging, breaking, tangling or burning of hair, and, to avoid the use of metallic aids which, when hot because of the warm hair of dryer, can split and burn hair. The commonly used attachments to hold rollers in place and fasten hair to rollers are usually made of metal for their longer duration. Metal can break and damage the hair, particularly when it is long or very fine. The plastic denticles attached to the outer rings of this particular roller do not have any of these inconveniences. There are no marks in the hair because these rings are only for the purpose of holding it tight to the roller and they do not press the hair in any way. This permits to create a perfect curvature when styling the hair. Furthermore, through the complete exposure of the hair to the air from the dryer and the ventilation of said hair throughoval openings located along the main body of the roller, there is less time consumed in drying.
This roller can be used on all kinds of hair: normal, white, tinted, bleached, thin, thick, short or long. Because of the advantage of having no metal attachments or parts, sensitive scalps, necks, or ears will not suffer burns or burning sensations caused by the warming of the metal. The outer rings attached to the roller will] facilitate the unrolling of the hair when it is dried to a simple pull-out motion of these rings thus avoiding the entanglement and subsequent breakage of hair, particularly when it is very long.
The roller can be manufactured in different sizes for different lengths of hair and variety of hair styling. All additaments will be included in the roller. There are no separate parts and no need to use any attachments for any reason at all. The rectangular openings in the cylinder and the denticled circular palisade or annular comb of tines in the outer rings can be modified to a larger length, if necessary. Variations in the size and width of roller can be designed during manufacturation as it favors the hair styling needs.
The roller is composed of one cylindrical part and two outer rings attached or fastened to both ends of the cylinder. These rings are the main advancement of the roller due to the way in which they hold the hair when rolled. The cylinder body has a hollow interior and has 1/16 inch width and 2 inches long, with an interior diameter of 1% inches. In this cylinder, different openings are located. First, there are four rows, of three oval openings each, located along the cylinder from top to bottom. These openings permit the air flow from the dryer to run freely thru the rolled hair thus lessening the time spent drying hair when set in this particular kind of roller.
There are also four rectangular openings of l/ l 6 inch width by /8 inch long located towards the ends of the cylinder, making a total of eight. These rectangular openings act as receiving segments in which four lugs or fag-ends, protuding from a hollow wall of 7/8 inch long coming from the outer rings, will fit. The canning lugs or fag-ends are four in each outer ring. There are two such rings, one fastened to each end of the cylinder; so that makes a total of eight fag-ends per roller. The rectangular openings in the cylinder and the fagends of the hollow wall of the outer rings will serve as an embolus. which will permit the push-in" and pullout motion which is the greatest advantage of this roller. The outer ends of 'the cylinder are formed by a band that covers sixteen openings which permit the sixteen denticles deriving from each outer ring to pass through them and fit tightly when roller is in a closed position. There are sixteen of these openings at each end of the cylinder to match with the sixteen denticles in each of the outer rings.
The two outer rings will fit one in each of the endings of the cylinder. These rings have an outer circular palisade of 16 denticles of 5/8 inch long and an inner hollow cylindrical wall of 7/8 inch long. These denticles pass through the openings at the extremes of the cylinder to hold hair in place when rolled. The hollow cylindrical wall slides inside the cylinder and the four fagends fit in the four rectangular openings of the cylinder, thus acting as an embolus. The length of the rectangular openings will mark the butt or limit to which the outer rings can be pulled out or pushed in, creating a compact and secure mechanism. The exterior endings of the outer rings are slightly undulated to facilitate the manipulation when opening or closing the roller.
The functioning of this roller will be as follows: a strand of hair is separated, as usual when setting hair, and the two outer rings will be in its opened position in order to roll the hair. That is, the two rings are pulled out up to where the fag-ends of the hollow walls of these rings meet the end of the rectangular openings of the cylinder. The hair is then rolled as usual, and, when this is done, both outer rings are simply pushed in fully. When this motion is performed, the 16 denticles of each outer ring pass through the openings in the extremes of the cylinder and gently hold the hair in place.
Because there are no metal attachments on this entirely made of plastic roller, only the denticles come in contact with with the hair, thus it will dry with a perfect curvature and without damage.
When hair is dried, a simple motion of pulling the outer rings out will free the rolled hair without entanglement or breakage.
The objects of the invention and operation of the various embodiments thereof will be more fully understood when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

In FIG. 3, openings 8 along extreme endings of cylindrical tube or main body FIG. 1 are located in a cylindrical sequence. These are 16 in each ending of FIG. 1 to permit plastic denticles l of outer rings FIG. 2 to pass through them when sliding in or out to open or close roller. An outer band 9 covering the outer ring of main cylinder FIG. 1 covers the sixteen openings 8 to permit plastic denticles 1 of FIG. 2 to fit tightly when roller is in a closed position. The body wall 10 of the main cylindrical tube FIG. 1 has l/l6 inch width and 2 inches long with an interior diameter of 1 /8 inches. In this wall 10 the different rectangular openings 4 and oval openings 5 are distributed and in it the hair is rolled.
In FIG. 4 the plastic denticles 1 are distributed in a circular sequence. The hollow wall 2 is also attached to it and the fag-ends 3 are part of te hollow wall 2. The
exterior end 1 1 of outer rings FIG. 2 is where the denticles I will be attached and it has a slightly undulated surface to better manipulate the roller when fastening both rings by push-in" and pull-out" motions.
In FIG. 5 the left outer ring is shown in its opened position l2 and the right outer ring is shown in its closed position 13.
The invention and the embodiments have been described in detail. It is to be interpreted in view of the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
1. A hair curler of substantially rigid molded plastic material composed of three separable components comprising a. a hollow tubular body having a plurality of openings in the lateral wall thereof for the free passage of air currents from the interior to the exterior of the body adapted to have the hair wound thereon.
b. an annular flange extending from the opposite ends of the tubular body, each provided with a plurality of equidistantly displaced apertures therein,
c. said tubular body having a plurality of elongated slots in the lateral wall of the roller adjacent to each end thereof parallel to the longitudinal axis of said tubular body and at widely displaced points along the periphery thereof,
d. an end cap mounted for telescopic movement at each end of said tubular body comprising a circular plate at one end,
e. an annular comb formed of a plurality of tines extending inwardly from said plate adjacent to the periphery thereof and corresponding in number to.
the apertures in the annular flange of said tubular body,
f. a cylindrically-shaped guide member also extending from said circular plate inwardly of said annular comb for a length slightly greater than the length of said tines and terminating in a continuous circumferential edge.
g. said annular comb and guide member being arranged coaxially with the longitudinal axis of said tubular body, and
h. a plurality of camming lugs on the exterior surface of said guide member adjacent to said circumferential edge remote from said circular plate, at widely displaced points along the periphery thereof corresponding to the peripheral displacements of said elongated slots in said tubular body, and engageable with the latter, the ends of which define the limits of relative telescopic movement between each end cap and tubular body, to permit the winding of the hair on substantially the entire length of the tubular body in the outward positions of the end caps or the retention thereof on said tubular body in the inward positions of said end caps.
2. A device as set forth in claim 1 wherein said elongated slots in the tubular body and lugs on the exterior surface of said guide member are four in number, at
displacements from each other.

Claims (2)

1. A hair curler of substantially rigid molded plastic material composed of three separable components comprising a. a hollow tubular body having a plurality of openings in the lateral wall thereof for the free passage of air currents from the interior to the exterior of the body adapted to have the hair wound thereoN, b. an annular flange extending from the opposite ends of the tubular body, each provided with a plurality of equidistantly displaced apertures therein, c. said tubular body having a plurality of elongated slots in the lateral wall of the roller adjacent to each end thereof parallel to the longitudinal axis of said tubular body and at widely displaced points along the periphery thereof, d. an end cap mounted for telescopic movement at each end of said tubular body comprising a circular plate at one end, e. an annular comb formed of a plurality of tines extending inwardly from said plate adjacent to the periphery thereof and corresponding in number to the apertures in the annular flange of said tubular body, f. a cylindrically-shaped guide member also extending from said circular plate inwardly of said annular comb for a length slightly greater than the length of said tines and terminating in a continuous circumferential edge, g. said annular comb and guide member being arranged coaxially with the longitudinal axis of said tubular body, and h. a plurality of camming lugs on the exterior surface of said guide member adjacent to said circumferential edge remote from said circular plate, at widely displaced points along the periphery thereof corresponding to the peripheral displacements of said elongated slots in said tubular body, and engageable with the latter, the ends of which define the limits of relative telescopic movement between each end cap and tubular body, to permit the winding of the hair on substantially the entire length of the tubular body in the outward positions of the end caps or the retention thereof on said tubular body in the inward positions of said end caps.
2. A device as set forth in claim 1 wherein said elongated slots in the tubular body and lugs on the exterior surface of said guide member are four in number, at 90* displacements from each other.
