(Cl. 132-40) This invention relates to devices used for forming curls in the hair and more particularly to provide a hair curling device that is easy to roll the hair thereon and which securely holds the hair in rolled position as well as retaining the hair curling device on the head of the user by a single movement and without any pre-positioning of the curler required.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a hair curling device of relatively simple construction which will be convenient and rapid to operate even by the self user.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a hair curling device for either home or professional use wherein the hair-winding member is easily secured against accidental reverse rotation with the resulting unwinding of the hair.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a hair curling device that has a hair holding member that can be placed in operative position regardless of the position of the hair winding member with respect to the scalp of the user and the hair rolled thereon.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a hair curling device which will positively retain the hair rolled thereon in a simple operation without the operator shifting her hands.
Still another object is to provide a hair curling device that accomplishes all of the above and yet is simple to use, inexpensive to fabricate, light in weight, allows any moisture in the hair to freely evaporate, easy to package and reliable and durable in use.
Further objects and features of the invention will be apparent when the following description is considered in Connection with the annexed drawings wherein similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in which:

Referring to the embodiment of the present invention as shown in FIGS. l and 2 wherein the hair curling device has an elongated body portion or hair winding member 11 upon which the tress or swatch of hair is wound for curling. Hair winding member 11 has relatively narrow, serrated end portions 13 and 15. inwardly of ends 13 and 15, hair winding or body member 11 is preferably tapered with the said taper extending from its conical or flared outer ends inwardly to a narrow central portion 17. Advantageously the tapered surface of hair winding member 11 has longitudinal grooves or recesses 19 forming circumferentially spaced ribs 20 which provide ventilation for the hair which may be Wound upon body member 11. Preferably 4ribs 2i) are roughened such as by Y knurling on their outer surfaces for aiding in initially catching and holding the ends of the strands of hair in the swatch or tress to be wound on hair winding member 11 preparatory to winding.
Ends 13 and 15 of body member 11 have a series of longitudinal grooves or recesses thereabout designated generally at 21 and 22 respectively. Grooves 21 and 22 on ends 13 and 15 respectively form a generally serrated outer peripheral surface on opposite ends of body member 11. Ends 13 and 15 of body member 11 are each provided with a central longitudinal -recess or passage 25 and 27 respectively opening therethrough. Longitudinal recesses 25 and 27 each have a larger diameter concentric recessed area indicated at 29 and 31 respectively, adjacent the opening for receiving a collar 35 and 36 respectively therein. Collars 36 and 35 are tightly received in recesses 29 and 31 respectively and each collar has an inner diameter smaller than the inner diameter of its respective longitudinal central recess 25 and 27 so that collars 36 and 35 project radially inwardly in their respective longitudinal recess.
Ends 13 and 15 of body'member 11 each slidably receive a curl holding member 38 and 39 respectively. Curl holding members 3S and 39 are substantially identical and only curl holding member 38 will be described in detail.
Curl holding member 38 has a stop member or head `4t), shown in the form of a disc and an elongated substantially cylindrical shank 42 extending substantially perpendicular from the center of head 40. Shank 42 has a bifurcated conical end 44. Adjacent end 44 of shank 42 is an outwardly directed circumferential ange 46 tapering downwardly toward end `44. Substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of shank 42 and extending perpendicularly from head 40 adjacent its peripheral edge are a series of prongs or fingers 48. Prongs 48 have relatively pointed ends and the inner surfaces of prongs 48 define a cylinder of a diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the cylinder defined by recesses 21 about edge 13. The outer diameter of shank 42 is slightly smaller than the inner diameter of collar 35 for slidable movement therewith and the outer diameter of flange 46 on shank 42 is greater than the inner diameter of collar 35 for preventing egress or" end 44. In like manner curl holding member 39 has a stop member or head 50, a longitudinal centrally deposed cylindrical shank 51, a biurcated end 53, a tapered flange 55 and a series of longitudinal spaced apart prongs 57.
To assemble curl holding member 38 in body member 11 bifurcated end y44 of shank 42 is sprung through collar 35 into central longitudinal recess 25 with elongated prongs 48 being slidably received in recesses 21 in end 13. Thus prongs 48 extend longitudinally in spaced relation to hair winding member 11. In a similar manner curl holding member 39 is assembled in end 15 of body member 11 as shown best in FIG. 2. In this position curly holding members 38 and 39 can be moved longitudinally with respect to body member 11 but cannot `be accidently displaced therefrom due to flanges 46 and 55 respectively engaging collars 35 and 36' respectively. If desired the outer diameters of flanges 46 and 55 may be slightly larger than the inner diameter of longitudinal recesses 25 and 27 respectively in order to provide rictional engagement therebetween upon longitudinally movement of curl holding members 38 and 39 so as to aid in retaining said members in desired relative movement with respect to body member.
A further embodiment of the present invention is shown in FIG. 3 wherein a central longitudinal recess 62 in hair winding on body member 65 has an inwardly projecting Patented Nov. 2o, rss2v 3 lip 66 adjacent the outer edge thereof. A curl holding member 67 has a series of prongs 69 perpendicularly eX- tending from the peripheral edge of a stop member or a cap 70 in a manner similar as described above with respect to FIGURES l and 2. Prongs 69 arereceived in recessed end 72 of body member 65. Curl holding member 67 has a uniform shank extending from the center of cap 70 substantially parallel to prongs 69 and having an outer diameter substantially equal to the inner diameter of depending lip 66 in longitudinal recess 62. Shank 74 has a concentric aperture longitudinally therein and extending through cap 70. Extending through this central aperture in cap 70 and shank 74 is a cylindrical shaft 76. Attached to the outer end of shaft 76 is a disc or knob 78 lying substantially parallel to cap A70 of curl holding member 67. At the opposite or inner end of shaft 76 abutting the end of shank 74 is a tapered flanged yend 80, having an outer diameter greater than the inner diameter of lip 66 of recess 62. Preferably the outer peripheral surface of disc 78 is knurled or roughened to provide a positive gripping surface. Also, disc 78 advantageously is of slightly larger diameter than cap 70 to facilitate using this embodiment as will lbe discussed hereafter. In some instances it may be desirable to place a transverse split in tapered end 80 so that the entire curl holding member may be sprung into position through inwardly turned lip 66 of recess 62 in a manner similar as described above with respect to FIGURES l and 2. In a further embodiment of the present invention shown in FIGS. 4 through 6, elongated body or hair winding member 90 is tapered inwardly yfrom its outwardly flaring ends 91 and 93 in a manner substantially similar to that discussed above with respect to FIGURES l and 3. End 91 has a series of spaced apart, longitudinal, apertures 95 therein with one end of each aperture 95 terminating in the transverse surface or endwise direction of body member 90, as shown best in FIG. 6, and the opposite end of aperture 95 emerging along the tapered surface of body member 90. End 93 has a series of spaced Vapart longitudinal apertures 96 similar to aperture 95 with each aperture 96 being longitudinally aligned with a respective aperture 95. Body member 90 has a longitudinally centrally disposed recess 97 or if desired it could be tubular or hollow. Radially disposed in recess 97 and adjacent end 91 is an inwardly projecting rim or bearing support 98. Rim 98 has a central aperture 99 therein. Adjacent end 91 is an elongated curl holding member 101 having a transverse cap 103 and an elongated shank 104 projecting at substantially right angles lfrom the center of cap 103. Projecting from the same face of cap 103 as shank -104 and substantially parallel to the axis of shank 104 are a plurality of elongated prongs 105. Prongs 105 are spaced about the lateral surface of cap 103 and have such a diameter as to -be slidably received in apertures 95 and 96 of ends 91 and 93 respectively of body member 90 as shown in FIGS. 4 and 6. The diameter of shank 104 is substantially equal to the diameter of aperture 99 in rim 98. The end of shank 104 is enlarged, such as by a conical point 107, having an outer diameter greater than the inner diameter of aperture 99. Spaced from the inner surface of cap 103 along shank 104 is a yieldable protuberance 109. Protuberance 109 is spaced vfrom the inner surface of cap 103 a distance slightly greater than the distance that inwardly facing lateral surface 111 of rim 98 is from the transverse edge of end 91, so that upon curl holding member 101 being in fully closed position and the inner surface of cap 103 is abutting end 91, the yieldable protuberance 109 will be sprung through aperture 99 in rim 98 for aiding in preventing accidental displacement of curl holding member 101.
In using the device shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, curl holding members 38 and 39 are longitudinally urged outwardly in their fully open position so that projecting flanges 46 4 and 55 of shanks 42 and 51 respectively rest against collars 35 and 36 respectively. With curl holding members 38 and 39 in their fully open position, prongs 48 and 57 are respectively adjacent ends 13 and 15, so that curl winding member 11 is Vsubstantially available for receiving a swatch of hair. It should be noted that thev sliding portion of the shank members of both curl holding members 38 and 39 is of such a length that the pointed ends of prongs 48 and 57 are substantially juxtaposed to serrated ends `13 and y15 respectively, upon projecting llanges 46 and 55 respectively abutting collars 35 and 36,
respectively. With curl holding members 38 and 39 in this position the ends of the swatch or tress of hair to be curled are spread upon the outer peripheral surfaces of ribs 17 of body member 11. The roughened surfaces of ribs 17 engage the strands of hair and aid in holding these individual strands for initial winding. Body member 11 is rotated easily, winding up a roll of hair on the ribs 17. When the desired amount of hair is woundv thereon, curl holding members 38 and 39 are urged longitudinally inwardly into the wound hair with prongs 48 sliding in respective recesses 21 in end 13 and prongs 57 being slidably journaled in recesses 22 in end l15. The pointed ends of prongs 48 and 57 freely penetrate the hair wound about body member 11. Curl holding members 38 and 39 are retained in closed position due to friction with the wound curled hair. sired, the outer diameter of tapered iianges 46 and 55 may be slightly greater than the inner diameter of central longitudinal recesses 25 and 27 respectively for fric-v tionally engaging the surface and aiding in retaining hair holding members 38 and 39 in their desired positions.
In like manner the embodiment shown in FIGURE 3 is used for retaining the hair wound upon body member 65. Disc 78 aids in winding the tress of hair on to body member 65 by being freely rotatable with respect to body member 65.
The embodiment shown in FIGS. 4 through 6 is used in a similar manner, with curl holding member 101 being in its fully open position with respect to body member while hair is being wound thereon. Upon the'desired amount of hair being wound on member 90, curl holding member 101 is urged longitudinally inwardly in the direction of arrow i115 through the wound hair on body member 90 with the ends of prongs 105 being received into recesses and apertures 96 in end 93 and protuberance 109 sprung through aperture 99. As was discussed with respect to the embodiment shown in FIGS. l and 2, shank 104 is of such a length that the pointed ends of prongs 1105 are contiguous to apertures in end 91 upon the projecting surface of tapered end 107 contacts surface 111 of rim 98.
It should be noted that the present invention allows the hair to be wound on the curling device and securely retained thereon with the hands of the user always remaining on the caps or ends of the hair clamping members.
It will be understood that the curl devices can be constructed of any suitable materials, but from the standpoint of economy and weight it would be desirable to form the same from plastic material, particularly the prong members of the curl holding member which preferably should be of a yieldable but substantially rigid material.
lWhile in the embodiments shown in FIGURES l and 3 projecting prongs of the curl support members were used at both ends of the hair winding member, a single series of prongs could be used with a single curl holding member in a manner as disclosed in the embodiment shown in FIGS. 4 through 6. And likewise a pair of ourI holding members may be used from both ends in conjunction with a series of apertures in the body member as shown in FIG. 6. Also, the manner of allowing predetermined longitudinal movement of curl holding members disclosed in the embodiments may be used interchangeably.
As mentioned above, if de' v Further, while the hair winding members were preferably shown tapered they may be cylindrical having flanges on the ends.
While preferred embodiments of the invention have lbeen described above it Will be understood that many variations thereof will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, without departing from the spirit thereof. Therefore, it is intended that the foregoing description Shall be deemed illustrative only and not construed in a limiting sense, the present invention being defined solely by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A hair curling device comprising an elongated hair winding member having a pair of end portions, one of said end portions having a plurality of longitudinal notches about its outer peripheral surface and having a entral longitudinally extending recess opening outwardly therethrough, a plurality of elongated prongs each slidably mounted in a respective notch in said one end portion of said prongs and extending longitudinally in spaced relation to said hair winding member in the direction of the other end of said elongated member, a stop member having a cap mounted on the outwardly facing ends of said prongs so that said cap overlies said central longitudinally extending recess in said one end portion, said longitudinal recess having a collar receiving recess adjacent the opening, a collar having an inner diameter smaller than the diameter of said longitudinal recess and adapted to fit into Said collar receiving recess in said one end portion of said hair Winding member, a shaft extending from said stop member and having its longitudinal axis coincident to the longitudinal axis of said hair winding member, whereby said shaft is aligned with said central longitudinally extending recess in said one end, said shaft having an outer diameter substantially equal to the inner diameter of said collar and extending into said longitudinally extending recess in said one end portion, said shaft further having a resilient enlarged end of a diameter greater than the inner diameter of said collar for preventing removal of said shaft from said longitudinal recess, said shaft being of such length that said enlarged end thereon abuts said collar upon the ends of said prongs being adjacent their respective notches in said one end portion.
2. A hair curling device as described in claim l, wherein said enlarged end of said shaft is longitudinally split for facilitating entering through said collar into said longitudinally extending recess in said hair Winding member.
3. A hair curling device comprising an elongated body member having a pair of end portions With one end portion having longitudinal notches thereabout and having a central longitudinally extending recess opening outwardly therethrough, and a curl holding member adapted for longitudinally slidable movement with respect to said one end portion of said body member for opened and closed position, said curl holding member comprising a plurality of prongs extending in longitudinally spaced relation to said body member in the direction of said other end of said elongated body member with each prong being slidably received in respective notches in said one end portion, a stop member attached to the outwardly facing ends of each of said prongs, said stop member being substantially coaxial to said body member and having a tubular shank centrally mounted thereto facing in the same direction as said prongs, said shank being slidably received in said central longitudinal recess of said body member and adapted for longitudinal slidable movement therein, said stop member having an axial aperture therethrough aligned with the longitudinal opening of said shank, and a shaft rotatably disposed within said shank and stop member, said shaft extending beyond said shank end and having a resilient protuberance of larger diameter than said shank on said extension adjoining said shank end, said shaft extending beyond said stop member and having a cap attached thereto, depending means Within said longitudinal central recess adjacent said opening through said end portion of smaller diameter than said protuberance on said shaft, said shaft being dimensioned for limiting the longitudinal Withdrawal of said shank from said recess so that the ends of said prongs are adjacent the notched end portion of said body member in the fully opened position,

A hair curling device comprising an elongated body member upon which hair is to be Wound, having a pair of ends and tapering inwardly from said ends to form a central contracted portion, each of said ends having an outwardly projecting longitudinally notched peripheral rim thereabout and having a central longitudinally extending recess opening outwardly therethrough, and a pair of curl holding members adapted for longitudinally slidable movement with respect to said ends of said body member, each of said curl holding members comprising a plurality of arms longitudinally spaced from said body member, said arms of one of said curl holding members slidably received in notches in one of said ends, said arms of the other of said curl holding members slidably received in notches in the other of said ends, said arms of both of said curl holding members having their longitudinal axes substantially parallel to the axis of said body member, a stop member attached to the outwardly facing ends of each of said arms of each of said curl holding members, each of said stop members being substantially coaxial to said body member and having a shank centrally mounted thereto facing in the same direction as said respective arms, each of said Shanks being slidably received in respective central recesses of said body member, said shank adapted for longitudinal slidable movement therein and means for limiting the longitudinal Withdrawal of said shanks from their respective recesses upon the inwardly facing ends of said arms of each of said curl holding members, which ends are adjacent their respective notched ends of said body member.
5. A hair curling device comprising an elongated body member upon which hair is to be wound, said body member having iirst and second end portions and a longitudinally extending passage therein, said passage opening in an endwise direction at said first end portion, depending means in said passage and adjacent said rst end, a shaft slidably mounted in said passage having an enlarged resilient end of larger diameter than said depending means for preventing egress therethrough, a stop member adjacent said first end portion and overlying said passage opening therein, said stop member mounted to the other end of said shaft, a plurality of prongs mounted on said stop member extending longitudinally in spaced relation to said elongated body member in the direction of said second end portion, said prongs adapted to be slidably retained by said rst end portion.
