  • the invention relates to a discard removing device on a horizontal metal extrusion and tube presse, particularly for flat sections of aluminium.
  • auxiliary devices for such presses, these devices being adapted to load into the press the billet and the extrusion disc disposed behind the billet and to remove the extrusion discard comprising the billet discard (also known as the butt) and the extrusion disc from the press after the billet is extruded from the billet container of the press and through the die.
  • the extrusion discard is removed it is also important to ensure that the extrusion discard is transferred reliably and in a precisely defined position to an extrusion discard cutting device which is disposed outside the press.
  • a heated billet is placed in the billet container of the extrusion press, an extrusion disc is po sitioned behind the billet to prevent the rear end of the billet sticking to the ram and a ram forces the material of the billet through the die, which can be of any suitable form.
  • the rear end of the billet and the extrusion disc are still behind the die and the rear end of the billet is integral with the extruded tube or section which extends out in front of the die and has its rear end in the die.
  • German Auslegeschrift No. 1,l4l,606 discloses an extrusion discard removing device in which a collecting dish is mounted on a pivoting arm which is disposed outside the press.
  • the said collecting dish may be lowered on the pivoting arm in such a way that it is able to pivot laterally into the press below the extrusion discard and is placed below the said discard after being raised.
  • the collecting dish is thrust vertically downward by the extrusion discard.
  • the collecting dish with the extrusion discard may pivot out of the middle of the press after the shears return into an upper position.
  • the collecting dish shown in that Specification is suitable only for circular sections. Grippers cannot be attached.
  • U.S. Pat. No. 3,129.818 discloses an extrusion discard removing device: comprising a first lever which can be hydraulically pivoted into the press at right angles to the extrusion axis. A further lever is pivoted to the upper end of the first lever and is approximately horizontally positioned and retained by a hydraulic cylinder when the main lever has been pivoted inwards, the free end of the second lever supporting a fixedly mounted collecting dish or catch-pan for the extrusion discard, the said dish also having spring-loaded grippers for gripping the extrusion discard.
  • This extrusion discard removing device may also be lowered by the second arm during the inward pivoting motion so that the grippers may pivot past the exposed extrusion discard and the collecting dish is disposed directly under the extrusion discard when the second arm pivots upwardly.
  • the collecting dish is de flected downwardly in a circular arc about the pivoting point of the second arm on the first (main) lever when the cropping operation is performed. Since flat billets are thrust downwardly when in the horizontal position while being cropped by the shears but the collecting dish with the grippers is downwardly deflected along a circular arc, it follows that the removing device would thrust a flat billet out of the grippers when moving downwardly. This results in an unreliable and undefinable position of the extrusion discard,
  • the present invention provides a discard removing device for a horizontal extrusion press, the device comprising:
  • gripping means for gripping the extrusion discard, for movement into and out of the zone of the extrusion axis as the mounting means is moved towards and away from the extrusion axis;
  • the invention extends to a horizontal extrusion press having a generally vertically downwardly movable cropping blade for cropping off the discard and a discard removing device in accordance with the invention for removing the discard from the extrusion axis,
  • the invention can provide an extrusion discard removing device, more particularly for flat billets of aluminium, which can be of simple construction and maintenance and can be moved into and out of the extrusion axis in a simple manner, which is also capable of reliably gripping the extrusion discard despite its varying dimensions resulting from the cropping operation.
  • the device of the invention is capable of removing the extrusion discard out of the press between the extrusion axis and the press frame by moving the mounting means away from the extrusion axis and supplying the discard in a precisely defined position to an extrusion discard cutting device, more particularly if the gripping means is pressure fluid actuated to improve retention of the extrusion discard in the gripping means and the gripping means yields vertically downwardly during the cropping operation due to the parallel link means and is tilted awayfrom the extrusion axis after a vertical (upwards) return motion or is tilted away from the extrusion axis during the vertical return motion.
  • the parallel link and tilting means comprises an upper, generally horizontal lever pivoted to said mounting means, the lever having its free, front end portion pivoted to the gripping means, and a generally vertical lever pivoted to the mounting means on the same pivot axis as that between the generally horizontal lever and the mounting means (which pivot axis can be formed by a pivot pin fixed to the mounting means), the generally vertical lever having its free lower end portion movably connected to (e.g., pivoted to) one end portion of a second generally horizontal lever whose other end is pivoted to the gripping means.
  • the up and down movement of the gripping means may be actuable by a double-acting pressure fluid pistoncylinder unit having two cylinder chambers of identical effective cross-sectional area, which chambers are interconnected by an e.g., adjustable restrictor but which interconnection can be closed.
  • the gripping means may comprise two spaced pairs of gripping jaws disposed one behind the other, which pairs ofjaws may be actuable by a single actuating unit by way of a lever compensating system so that the gripping action of each pair of jaws can be either the same or different;
  • the lever compensating system preferably comprises a two-armed compensating lever to the centre portion of which the single actuating unit is connected while the two end portions are connected (either directly or through intermediate members such as levers) by way of ball joints to the respective pairs of gripping jaws. This arrangement can ensure that both pairs of gripping jaws always act with substantially the same force and that they are able to grip dimensions of different magnitude.
  • Each of the pairs of gripping jaws may comprise two rocker levers which are pivoted to a carrying member such as a collecting dish which is provided with the gripping jaws, which rocker levers have respective toothed lower horizontal free ends. for instance in the form of segments. which mesh with each other and upper generally vertical free ends which carry gripping heads. Force need be applied to only one of the rocker levers because of the, e.g., segmented tooth coupling between the two rocker levers. If. as is preferred, the gripping heads are pivoted to the respective jaws.
  • the pivoted gripping heads can ensure that the full width of their, e.g., flat sides always bears flush on the stepped extrusion discs or on the billet discard which is usually slightly deformed by the cropping operation so that the discard and extrusion disc are reliably held.
  • the mounting means is preferably a frame to be disposed outside the press and pivotal about a stationary pivot axis which is parallel to the extrusion axis. i.e,, pivotable for movement in a plane perpendicular to the extrusion axis, the gripping jaws being mounted on the free upper end of the pivotal frame.
  • the mounting means is preferably arranged for pivoting through an angle of substantially between its two limiting positions to enable an extrusion discard of flat section to be set down in a vertical position in the cutting device outside the press.
  • the mounting means can move parallel to the extrusion axis; this is important if one extrusion program involves cutting the extrusion discard with shears and a standard die and another extrusion program operates with a bridge or chamber die, in which the extrusion discard is torn off axially from the section and in its entirety is longer and must be taken up in a different axial position by the gripping means.
