SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 383,315, dated May 22, 1888.

Application filed July 1, 1887. Serial No. 243,095.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ANDREW J. MEGEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Binding, of which the following is a specification.

One of the main objects of my invention is to provide blank-books, ledgers, and similar books with temporary binders or covers which shall be strong, hold the books firmly, allow them to open out flat, and which can, when desired, be removed and used for other bound but uncovered books. A further object of my invention is to construct such temporary binders strongly and of convenient form for use for pamphlets, periodicals, and papers, as well as for bound blank-books.

I In large establishments,ledgers and aceou ntbooks become filled with entries so quickly that the expense of a supply of such books is considerable. The most expensive part of the book in many cases is the leather binding cover. As these books when once filled up are used comparatively little, Igreatly reduce the cost ofa series of them byproviding one temporary binding, which can be used for a number of the books in succession, When one of these books becomes filled with entries, it is removed from the cover and a new blankbook put in its place. Vhile the book is in the cover, however, it will be held securely and firmly, and will allow the book to open out flat.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a blank-book with one cover open constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional view, drawn to a larger scale, of a portion of the book. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the book and the temporary binding-cover separated; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view, partly in section, showing the manner of construct ing the binding-cover.

In carrying out my invention as applied to the binding of blank and other books Ibind the signatures A of the book together in any usual or convenient way, preferably with the stitching together of the front and back signatures, and the strengthening stays and strips described in my patent of June 7, 1887, No. 364,624., and in my application for patent filed (N0 model.)

September 7, 1886, No. 212,902. To the strengthening-stays described and claimed in the said application I secure, by paste, glue, or otherwise, linings or fly-leaves B, of thin board or of heavy paper. These fly-leaves are provided with flaps b, which are open toward the back of the book, Fig. 3, and which may be formed by making each of the fly-leaves of two thin boards or heavy sheets of paper, pasted together from the outer edge up to, say, the line on, Fig. 3,whence the outer board is left free to form the desired flap 1). I prefer, in order to strengthen the binding, to apply to the backs of the bound signatures and to the linings or fly-leaves B underneath their flaps a strip of canvas or muslin, b".

The binding-cover is composed of the usual two cover-boards, D D, and connecting backpiece E, or loose back, as it is called, to which the cover boards are hinged, these boards and back being covered with leather, cloth, or other suitable material, as usual. At the hinging-points are provided flaps F. In order to make the connection of these flaps with the covers sufficiently strong to prevent their being pulled out,.I form the flaps by taking a strip of textile material, E, Fig. 4, folding it so as to produce two folded edges, j, which I firmly secure between the two boards of which the foundation of each coverboard D is composed. Glue may serve to secure the folded edges in place; or, if preferred, rivets r, Fig. 4, may be used, with or without the glue. F form the desired flaps F, and the textile material of the flaps, Fig. 1-, may be stiffened and strengthened by means of strips of thin cardboard pasted or glued on one or both sides, as indicated in Fig. 3. The portion of the strip F lying between the covers is preferably glued or pasted to the inside of theloose back of the book.

Vhen the bound but coverless book is to be secured in the temporary binder, the flaps F are laid in between the fly-leaves or linings and their flaps b, and then the two are connected by any suitable fastening device, such as papenfasteners p, or eyelets, or laces inserted through openings 0 in the fly-leaves and both sets of flaps. The book is thus firmly secured to the bindingcover, but in such a way The outer edges of the folded strip that it will open out flat. When the book is no longer needed, the fastening devices are released and the bound signatures removed from the cover, which can then be used for a new blank-book. The covers, back, and their flaps thus constitute a strong and convenient temporary binder, which can be used for periodicals, pamphlets, and other papers, as well as for blank-books, as before described.

I claim as my invention- 1. A blank or similar book consisting of bound signatures, having fly-leaves with flaps,

. and a binding-cover, also provided with flaps and fasteners for the flaps, whereby the book and its cover are detachably secured to each other, substantially as set forth.

2. A blank or similar book consisting of bound signatures and strengtheningstays stitched to the signatures, fly-lcaves secured to the said strengthening-stays, and a bindingcover, to which the said fiy-lcaves are detachably scoured, substantially as described.

3. A temporary binding-cover consisting of a back and cover boards hinged thereto, and flaps made from a strip of textile material folded and having its folded portions secured between the boards of the covers, substantially as set forth.
