COOKING-STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES H. LYON, of Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cooking- Stoves, of which the following is a specifition.
WVhereas inconvenience has arisen in cook stoves having the furnace above the oven for the want of more perfect control over the heat applied to the oven during the process of baking. Therefore an improvesuch inconvenience which improvement consists in combining a movable furnace with a subjoined oven in a cook stove which may be executed as in the drawings connected herewith-by a hollow cube or other figure divided horizontally intoan upper and lower chamber the upper division being for the insertion of kettles to be heated and for the adjustment of the movable furnace for heating the same and also for heating the oven the lower division being the oven to be heated and by so arranging the movable furnace that it can by a rod which pierces the crust of the chamber be slid on a wire or railway or on wheels as may be preferred back and forward in said chamber and thus act on the rear and front boilers or on the oven below with greater or less intensity according to the position in which it is there placed and also by causing a flue to pass 3,830, dated November 18, 1844.
the oven under and up the back of the same to the outlet and by opening a passage governed by a valve from the upper chamber direct to said flue so that the flame from the movable furnace can at pleasure be passed either off direct or down and around said oven or the same may be effected by any other manner of adjustment preferred provided only a movable furnace be combined with an oven situate under the same for the purpose of regulating by its motion the degree of heat bearing on said oven. For further information reference must be had to the drawings connected herewith.
The invention and improvement herein contemplated consists in combining a movable furnace with a subjoined oven in such manner that the heat of the oven can be increased or diminished by the motion of said furnace which may be effected by the aforesaid adjustment or any manner that may be preferred.
I claim as my invention and improvement The government of the heat of an oven during the process of baking by combining therewith a movable furnace situate immediately above said oven. I
