Description

No. 11,673. Y Patented Sept. 12, 1854.
UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIcE.
JAMES MACGREGOR, JR., 0F TROY, NEW YORK.
COOKING- STOVE AND RANGE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 11,673, dated September 12, 1854.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JAMES MACGREGOR, Jr., of the city of New York, (late of the city of Troy,) in the State of New York, have invented new and. useful Improvements in the mode of const-ructing ranges,
be suiicient heat passing through the platesA of the lirebox to operate the ovens, with the smallest amount of combustion of fuel that will satisfactorily do the boiling-which is usually done by m improved articleswhen nearly all the raft of the chimney is.
cut off from the fire. The plates of the firebox or pot are plates not connected with the permanent part of the range or stove any more than is necessary to keep them in their places and are so formed that they are readily taken out and replaced, but as this is common with all stoves having iron fire plates or pots, a minute detail is not deemed profitable or requisite.
Second. In having a flue or flues surrounding the oven or ovens (or partially so and then reverting) the air in which is heated by the heat that passes through the plates of the fire box or mostly so. These flues are intended to be air tight, so as to prevent the air from escaping from the flues and to prevent ashes from falling into the flues. (In some instances the air is made to pass into the oven and act directly 0n the things to be baked and by a flue on the farther side of the oven return to the fire pot or plates.) The air in these flues in those parts between the firebox and the oven is more heated and of course lighter, and from being lighter, rises and the air in the flues farthest from the rebox, being heavier, descends and thus a constant and rapid circulation of hot air is made to pass around or partially around the oven or ovens in these flues-from which the oven or ovens, receive their required, or nearly their required heat. To prevent that part of the oven, nearest the rebox, from being over heated-I put one or more plates in the Hue between the fireboX and the oven, thus dividing the flues in that part into two or more flues-and the same on top-if it be too hot-or any nonconducting substance may be used to equalizethe heat.
Figure 1, represents a birds-eye view. A represents the top of the range with all the covers olf and t-he grate removed, from the firebox. B B, represents the water pipes. C, C, represents the bars on which the grate rests. D, D, represents the smoke pipes. E, E, represents the two covers, that are to be removed, when the draft is to be lessened. F, F, F, F, F, F, represents the boiler-holes. G, G, represents the plates, that cause the draft, to go forward to the covers E, E, before it can reach the smoke ues.
Fig. 2, represents an elevation taken at the line N. B, represents the water-back. B', B', represents the water pipes. C, represents the back bar on which the grate rests. D, D, represents the smokle pipes. G, G, represents the plates, that divert the drafts, as above stated, in front of the covers E, E. L L L L L L represents the flues that surround the ovens, in which the hot air circulates around the ovens and communicates the required heat to the ovens. I, represents the fire box or chamber of combustion. K, K, represents the ovens. A, represents the top of the range. F, represents the center piece, supported by the pedestal O. M, M, represents the plates that divide the flues between the ovens and the fire box. O, represents the pedestal, that rests on the water back and rises to the bottom of the center piece and prevents it from deflection.
Apertures may be made, into the flues surrounding or partly surrounding the ovens, to let in cold air, and to let out the hot air, to regulate the heat in the ovens or to heat any other space-when not required B, represents the water-back. y
for bakng-also'to clean out any sediment, that may lodge in the ues. The fire is kindled and the range operated, the same as other articles-for like purposes, excepting With less@v draft. '-The-rebox'-is`, gerieatllyA to be kept about full of coal and is not gen-v erally alowed to go out at night.
Having thus fuly described the nature of my invention and the Inode oi operating the
