UNITED T S PATENT v I HENRY BERRY, OF sHEL'roiv, CONNECTICUT, AssIeNoE TdTHE DERBY SILVER COMPANY, OF SAME rLhoE.
BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 381,206, dated April 17,1888. 1
Application filed August 25, 1887. Serial No. 247.800. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY BERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelton, in the county of Fairlield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichitappertains to make and use the same.
My in vention relates to certain new and useful improvements in brushes; but more particularly does it appertain to that class of brushes-wherein the brushland the wooden and with these ends in view my invention consists in the means hereinafter to be described for firmly securing the brush properinto the metal back, which will be "hereinafter more full described, and then'recited in the claims.
In order'that those skilled, in the art to which my invention appertains may th0roughly understand my invention and how to make the same I willdescribe the same in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which so Figure Isis a plan of the inner side of the metal backing prior to the securing of the,
brush therein, and Fig. 2 a central vertical transverse section of the brush and backing.
- 'fit over the wooden brush-back.
Similarfigures indicate like partsin both the views."
1 is the wooden brush back, wherein thebristles are secured in anyordinary manner. At or near its center the wooden brush-back has made therein an undercut recess, 2, which is 5 is a key, which is preferably concavo-con- 'vex in cross section, and which is secured, as: 5
by soldering, to the inner surfaceof the metal backing. I The said key is of suchsize as'to be I justcapable of entrance into the undercut re- I cess aforesaid. 4 7 V By means of my device the brush andback- '50 ing are secured together as follows: The undercut recess in the brush-back is first filled with some strong adhesivecement. ing isthen placed, over the brush-back, and
the key thereby causedto embed in the cement within the recess. As the cement hardeus,
the key is firmly retained therein; The sec- I tion, Fig. 2, shows the assembledpositio'n of T the parts, the cement being indicated by Fig. v 6; Asan additional means of security, thean- 6onular flange of the metal'backing' is spun nor turned over the edge of the brush-back In I this way a brush of greatsolidity and strength is assured. Q I e A Iclaim-r- 1.7 The combinationwith the metallic backing,of a key secured tothe inner face thereof,
a brush having 'a recessin its back within which theikey is adapted to fit, and astratum I of cement arranged withinthe recess and sur- 7o rounding the key, substantially as set forth. 2: The combination, with the brush having an undercut recess in the back thereof, of a metal backing provided interiorly' witha key andanntilarlywith. a projectingflange, said backing being, adapted to be secured to the brush-back by the embedding of thek'eyinthe cement withinthe undercut recess, and also by the turning of the annularflange to embrace thepbrush-back at its edges, substantially as 8o setfortht p a In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in 5' presence of two witnesses.
