INVENTOR (33 86M /5LL/ .flttorn UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE.
CHARLES A. KUPFER, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA.
HAM E TUG.
$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 380,903, dated April 10, 1888.
Application filed May 23, 1887. Serial No. 239,162. (No model.)
To atZ whomit may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. 'KUPEER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Des Moincs and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hame-Tugs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hame-tugs in which a plate with loops and recesses operates in conjunction with a tongued key; and the object of my invention is to provide a simple and convenient mode of fastening and unfastening the traces to the plate attached to the hame. I accomplish this by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a full face view of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal cross-section of the plate with the key in position as locked. Fig. 3. represents a view of the key. Fig. 4; is a vertical crosssectional View of the key and plate.
Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, A represents the plate in a hame'tug, made preferably of metal. It is provided with the rivet-holes D, by means of which it is attached with rivets to a leather backing. This plate A,further, has the slightly inwardcurved loop I, by means of which the plate is attached to the hame, and also the elevated loop E, underneath and through which passes the trace. F is a loop in this plate for the back-band, and G represents a loop for the belly-band.
B B represent a series of recesses or holes in the plate A, preferably square cornerechwhich recesses have their sides partly beveled, as illustrated by C, so as to form a female dovetail. One end of this recess B is also slightly beveled downward, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings by letter b.
Fig. 3 of the drawings represents the key J.
It consists of theinclined tongue II, theposition of which is best shown in Fig. 2, the maledovetail J, and the part K, to which the traceLis attached. The under side of plate A is cut away, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
Th operation of my invention is as follows: The plate A is in the first place attached to the hame through loop I, and by means of loops F and G to back-band and belly-band, respectively. I now pass the trace, to the end of which key J is attached, through the loop E, bring it forward, and insert the tongue and dovetail part of this key into the recess B and slide the key back, so that its dovetail part will engage with the dovetail part of therecess B. In this position it is looked, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the tongue H resting against the bevel b. This forms a secure fastening for the trace to the plate. In order to unfasten the same, part K of the key is raised and the tongue H passed forward under the plateA, whereby the dovetail part of the key is released and the key can be withdrawn.
What I claim as my invention, and desiret secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a hame-tug, the combination, with a plate, A, having perforations B, said perforations B having female dovetailed portions 0 and beveled ends I), of a key, J, having male dovetailed portions J and a tongue, H, sub stantially as described.
2. In a hame-tug, the combination, with a plate, A, said plate provided with a depressed loop, I, an elevated loop, E, side loops,-Fand G, and a series of perforations, B, having dovetailed portions 0 and beveled ends Z, of
a key, J, provided with a tongue, H, and beveled portions J, substantially as described.
CHARLES A. KUPFER. \Vitnesses: H. F. RoHDE,
H. ZIMMERMAN.
