3 Claims, 2 Drawing Figures placed and its wall from MOLD WITH A TURNING MECHANISM FOR CONTINUOUS CASTING OF METALS BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to the field of continuous casting of metals.
The process of ingot shaping is to a great extent subjected to the influence of such variables as design features and thermo-physical properties of the mold, kinematics of relative motion of the mold and the ingot as well as the nature of strains developing in a solidified skin of the ingot. It is common knowledge that the occurence of cracks in the crystallizing skin of the ingot is due to concentration of thermal and shrinkage stresses in weak sections of the ingot which is brought about by non-uniform solidification at its initial stage and by irregular distribution of temperatures over the ingot cross-section. The latter is associated with macroinhomogeniety in liquid metal due to different temperatures and also to heat transfer along the ingot perimeter. Of prime importance also is the unsymmetrical movement of the mold which is therefore forced against one side of the ingot.
Known in the art is a mold for continuous casting of metals fitted with a swinging gear whose movable member supports the mould.
Distribution of heat flux in this mold is fully deter mined by the dimensions of gas clearance between the ingot surface and mold walls along its perimeter. Thus there is a difference in heat transfer from various parts of the ingot surface along with non-uniformity of the crystallization front which tends to increase as the mold reciprocates along the ingot by which virtue it (the mold) is pressed to one of the ingot sides. All this adversely affects the quality of ingots which may result in the distortion of the ingot outline and in cracking.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to provide a mould and a mold swinging gear which will ensure a uniform front of crystallization of an ingot assuring thereby high quality of the ingot produced.
The specified and other. objects are achieved by the present invention in a proposed mold for continuous casting of metals with a swinging gear whose movable member supports the mold.
According to this invention, in order to ensure a uniform front of crystallization of an ingot, the mold wall is fitted with slots disposed at a distance of at least 200 mm from the mold top and distributed uniformly over the mold circumference with the slot height ranging within 60-85 percent of the moldlength and with the swinging gear designed in such a manner that its movable member, rigidly fixed to the mold, is capable of swinging back and forth through an angle correspond ing to the spacing between adjacent slots which ensures the uniform supply of a cooling agent onto the entire side surface of the ingot within the mold slot zone.
It ispreferred'to have the swinging gear fitted with a shell or ferrule (a movable member) secured on a movable race of a radial thrust bearing which is set up on a supporting frame and connected by means of a rigid joint with the mold and, by means of a hinge, with a swinging gear drive which assures the swinging of the mold back and forth, keeping its axis from being dis being forced against one side of the ingot.
The present invention has resulted in the developing of a mold for continuous casting of metals and a swing ing gear which ensures a uniform front of crystallization of the ingot and hence its high quality.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Mould 1 (FIGS. 1 and 2) comprising copper sleeve 2 secured in steel casing 3 which is mounted in swinging gear 4. The swinging gear 4 incorporates drive 9 and shell ferrule (movable member) 5 which supports mold 1 rigidly fixed on the shell, and radial thrust bearings 6 with movable race 7 being set up on supporting frame 8.
Located in the wall of mold l at adistance of at least 200 mm from its top are vertical slots 10 uniformly dis tributed over the circumference (the mold slots can be disposed at an angle to a horizontal plane) with the slot height amounting to 60-85 percent of the mold length.
Shell 5 or ferrule is mounted on movable race 7 of radial thrust bearing 6 being connected with the race by means of a rigid joint. In addition, the shell or ferrule is articulated with rod 11 of drive 9 and is capable of reciprocating back and forth thereby imparting a rotary motion to the mold to which it is rigidly fixed;
With operating drive 9 of swinging gear 4, rod 11 imparts to shell or ferrule and 5 mold l being'rigidly connected to the shell and movable race 7 of radial thrust bearing 6, a reciprocating-swinging motion through an at angle corresponding to the spacing between adjacent slots 10, through which cooling medium is supplied (by sprays 12) onto the entire side surface of the ingot within the slot zone of the mold. This ensures uniform coolingof the ingot and a constant front of crystallization. 1 b
