1 Claim, 2 Drawing Figures DEVICE FOR SECONDARY COOLING OF ROUND SHAPED INGOTS DURING CASTING OF METAL BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to the field of continuous casting of metals.
Known in the prior art is a device for the secondary cooling of round-shaped ingots during continuous casting of metals which comprises cooled tie bars designed for holding the ingot and sprays for supplying ingot cooling medium located between the tie bars.
With the above arrangement only a portion of the side surface of the round-shaped ingot is exposed to the effect of the cooling action, since its major portion is shielded by the tie bars. Thus the known device does not ensure uniform cooling of the ingot in the secondary zone which adversely affects its quality and can result in warping and bending.
The present invention has as a principal object the provision of a device for the secondary cooling of a round-shaped ingot during continuous casting of metals which will ensure the cooling of the entire side surface of the ingot with a cooling thereby assuring high quality of the ingot and keeping it from warping and bending.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The above specified and other objects of this invention are achieved by a proposed device for the secondary cooling of round-shaped ingots during continuous casting of metals comprising cooled tie bars intended for holding the ingot and sprays for supplying ingot cooling medium arranged between the tie bars.
According to this invention the tie bars and sprays are united into at least a single pair of sections either of which incorporates the cooled tie rods distributed uniformly over the circumference and sprays rigidly fixed in a ferrule mounted in a radial thrust bearing and coupled with a movable bearing race with each section capable of turning back and forth simultaneously with another section in opposite directions about a vertical axis through an angle corresponding to a spacing between the tie bars. This action results in a constant supply of the cooling medium onto the entire side surface of the moving ingot thereby providing an efficient and uniform cooling of the ingot and higher casting rates.
The present invention has resulted in developing of a device for the secondary cooling of round-shaped ingots during continuous casting of metals by which the entire side surface of the ingot is exposed to the action of the cooling medium ensuring high quality of the ingot and prevention of warping and bending.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS I To make the present invention more clear it is illustrated by the following exemplary embodiments to be taken in conjunction with the appended drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a device for the secondary cooling of a round-shaped ingot during continuous casting of metals;
FIG. 2 is a plan view taken along line lI--II of FIG. 1.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT In the drawings there is shown a device for the secondary cooling of a round-shaped ingot during continous casting of metals comprising a pair of similar sections 1 (FIGS. 1 and 2) either of which includes watercooled tie bars 2 spaced uniformly over the circumference and designed to hold ingot 3 during its withdrawal from a mould (not shown in the drawings) and sprays 4 arranged between the tie bars and intended for feeding cooling medium onto the side surface of the ingot. Tie bars 2 and sprays 4 are rigidly fixed on ferrule 5 which is mounted in radial thrust bearings 6 set up on supporting frame 7 rigidly bolted to the body of a continuous casting plant, with the ferrule being connected with a rigid joint to movable bearing race 8. Each section 1 is fitted with an individual drive 9 whose rod 10 is articulated with the ferrule 5. With the aid of these drives each section 1 is free to turn simultaneously with another section 1 back and forth in opposite directions about a vertical axis through an angle a corresponding to the spacing between tie bars 2 which provides for a uniform supply of the cooling medium over the entire side surface of moving ingot 3 ensuring thereby an efficient and uniform cooling of the ingot and higher casting rates. With the sections turning simultaneously in opposite directions the torque developed at the ingot by the turning sections are mutually equalized so that no additional loads are applied to the ingot (turning directions are indicated with arrows).
What is claimed is:
l. A device for the secondary cooling of a roundshaped ingot during continuous casting of metals in a continuous casting plant and having at least one pair of sections with each of the said section comprising: a supporting frame rigidly bolted to the body of said continuous casting plant; a radial thrust bearing set up on said supporting frame; a ferrule arranged on said radial thrust bearing and coupled with the aid of a rigid joint with a movable bearing race; cooled tie bars rigidly fixed in said ferrule, uniformly distributed around the ingot and intended to hold it, and sprays fixed in said ferrule for supplying ingot cooling medium; drive means for simultaneously turning said pair of sections in opposite directions about a vertical axis through an angle corresponding to a spacing between said tie bars, thus providing a uniform supply of the cooling medium onto the entire side surface of the moving ingot, thereby ensuring efficient and uniform cooling of the ingot and higher casting rates.
