Spencer Annear [57] ABSTRACT A device for producing cylindrical spaces in ingots on a plant for the continuous castion of metals is disclosed, said device being made as a metallic rod-like mandrel having an external surface which is fitted with longitudinal slots coupled with a central bore running inside the mandrel and accommodating a means for feeding a cooling agent to the internal space of the ingot being cast.
3 Claims, 2 Drawing Figures PATENTEBJM 3 ms DEVICE FOR PRODUCING INTERNAL CYLINDRICAL SPACE IN INGOTS BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates generally to devices for the continuous casting of steels and other metals and more particularly, it relates to devices adapted for pro ducing internal cylindrical spaces in ingots.
There is a device known in the prior art for producing internal spaces in ingots manufactured on a plant for the continuous casting of steels and other metals. The abovementioned device constitutes a rod-like mandrel whose exterior is in agreement with an internal space of the ingot being cast. The mandrel is fitted with circumferentially arranged longitudinal holes for the inflow of a cooling agent in communication with each other. The mandrel also has a central bore incorporating an axially disposed device for feeding the cooling agent to the internal space of the ingot to be cast, the cooling agent being supplied onto a section after the mandrel in a direction of movement of the ingot. A gap between the device and an internal surface of the bore serves for discharging gas-water emulsion formed in the course of cooling of the ingot being cast.
Due to the fact that under the effect of temperature stresses, the skin of solidified metal that is formed is subject to deformation; it comes off in scales (comes loose or peels off) locally from the mandrel surface being cooled. This results in the formation of a gas clearance which diminishes substantially the rate of cooling of the skin produced in these places and, hence, precludes its further growth which may lead to a breakage of the metal skin after the zone of mandrel location in a direction of motion of the ingot and to a leakage of molten metal into the internal space of the ingot being cast.
Moreover, in the zone of location of the mandrel the internal space of the ingot is cooled only due to heat transfer between the metal being cooled and the mandrel wall.
In the prior-art device, there is no direct contact between the cooling medium and the metal. The available cooling system is not sufficiently efficient to obtain in the mandrel location zone the skin depth which would allow casting hollow ingots on a continuous casting plant at high rates comparable with those attained in casting solid ingots.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a device for producing internal spaces in ingots which would enable a reduction to a minimum in a gas clearance between a mandrel and the skin of solidified metal being formed with a view towards increasing the rate of cooling the metal.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which would make it possible to increase the rate of casting hollow ingots due to an open feed of a cooling agent onto the internal surface of the hollow ingot in the zone of location of a mandrel.
These and other objects are accomplished by providing a device for producing internal cylindrical spaces in ingots on a plant for continuous casting of metals, which device is made as a metallic rod-like mandrel whose external surface is in agreement cast. the internal space of the ingot being cast, and which is fitted with holes that are circumferentially arranged and communicating with each other for the passage of the cooling agent and with a central bore incorporating an axially positioned means for delivering the cooling agent into the internal space of the ingot being cast in the section located after the mandrel in the direction of movement of the ingot with the clearance obtained between the means and the internal surface of the bore serving for discharging a gas-water emulsion produced in the course of cooling of the ingot being case. The mandrel is also provided with longitudinal slots ar ranged on its external surface along its length in the section where the metallic skin formed on the internal surface of the ingot being cast has a strength precluding its sagging into the slot, with each of the slots being connected with the central bore through a port and intended for drawing through the gas-water emulsion formed during the passage of the cooling agent into the internal space of the ingot being cast to provide more intense and uniform cooling of the internal space of the ingot.
The uniform cooling of the space of the ingot is attained by eliminating the effect of the gas clearance between the mandrel and the skin on the internal space of the ingot being cooled.
Further, it happened to be most advantageous economically that the mandrel exterior be fitted with longitudinal grooves arranged between the longitudinal slots which serve for drawing through the gas-water emulsion. The grooves are connected with the holes for the passage of the cooling agent and adapted for delivering the cooling agent from the holes into the space of the ingot being cast in the zone of location of the mandrel.
This provides for a still more intense cooling of the ingot space in the place of location of the mandrel.
Finally, it has proved most expedient and efficient, from the point of view of technology, that the device be made with a possibility of imparting to it a reciprocating-rotary motion in relation to its axis through an angle corresponding to a distance between the two adjacent slots for the drawing through of the gas-water emulsion, providing thereby similar cooling conditions along the entire perimeter of the mandrel in its crosssection.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The invention is further exemplified by the detailed description of an exemplary embodiment thereof, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a general view of a device for producing an internal cylindrical space in an ingot, according to the invention, longitudinal section; and
FIG. 2 is a view taken along the line II-II of FIG. 1.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT There is proposed a device for producing an internal cylindrical space in an ingot usable in a plant for the continuous casting of metals and alloys. The abovedevice is made as a metallic rod-like mandrel I (FIG. 1) fastened with one of its end to the top end face of a mould 2 and aligned axially with the latter with the help of a bracket 3. An external surface 4 of the mandrel l is in agreement with the surface 5 of an internal space 6 of the ingot 7 being cast and is fitted with longitudinal holes 8 (FIG. 2) for the passage of a cooling agent arranged along the circumference and communieating with each other at the loose end of the mandrel with the aid of a circular passage 9 (FIG. 1). Mounted on the mandrel l on the side of its fastened end are a header 10 for supplying the cooling agent, connecting every other hole for the passage of the cooling agent, and a header 11 for discharging the cooling agent, connecting the rest of the holes 8.
Inside the mandrel 1 along its axis there is provided a central bore 12 (FIG. 2) accommodating an axially arranged means for feeding the cooling agent into the internal space 6 of the ingot 7 being cast made as a pipe 13 with openings 14 through which the cooling agent is delivered to the space 6 in the section located after the mandrel 1 in a direction of movement of the ingot 7 withdrawn by a dummy bar 15. According to the invention, the external surface 4 of the mandrel l is fitted with longitudinal slots 16 (FIG. 2), provided along the length of the mandrel in the section where the strength of metallic skin 17 (FIG. 1) forming in the course of cooling on the surface 5 of the internal space 6 of the ingot 7 being cast precludes the possibility of sagging of this skin 17 into the longitudinal slots 16.
Each of the above specified slots, coupled with the central bore 12 through a port 18 (FIG. 2), serves for drawing through the gas-water emulsion produced after the mandrel in the direction of movement of the ingot when the cooling agent is fed into the internal space 6 of the ingot 7 being cast, this providing for a more intense and uniform cooling of the internal space of the ingot.
Also in conformity with the invention the mandrel 1 is provided with longitudinal grooves 19 arranged on its external surface 4 between said longitudinal slots 16 adapted for drawing through the gas-water emulsion. Each longitudinal groove 19 is located on the same radius with the hole 8 for the passage of the cooling agent and communicates with this hole through an opening 20 to ensure the supply of the cooling agent from the holes 8 into the internal space 6 of the ingot- 7 being cast in the zone of location of the mandrel 1.
An annular clearance 21 (FIG. 2) provided between the pipe 13 and the interior of the central bore 12 serves for discharging the gas-water emulsion which is formed in the course of cooling of the ingot 7 being cast, this being effected with the help of a vacuum pump (not shown in the drawing) connected to the bore 12.
For providing a more uniform cooling of the internal ingot space, the mandrel 1 is imparted with a reciprocating-rotary motion and turns through an angle corresponding to a distance between the adjacent slots 16 through which the cooling agent is supplied in succession onto each point of the surface of the internal space of the ingot.
The herein-proposed device operates in the following manner.
Liquid metal adjoining the external surface of the mandrel 1 crystallizes forming a gradually growing-on metallic skin 17, which, with the ingot being drawn out by the dummy bar gets into the zone of grooves 19 where the cooling agent is sprayed on it through openings 20. Due to rarefaction created by the pump, the gas-water emulsion which is produced during this operation is drawn along the grooves 19 first into the man- .drel l wherefrom it is discharged along the slots 16 and local clearances between the mandrel l and skin 17 of the ingot 7 resulting from the skin deformation into the central bore 12 to be exhausted to the atmosphere. After the mandrel the skin which is now capable of preserving independently geometrical shape and size is exposed to the effect of the cooling agent fed through the openings 14, this contributing to a still more rapid building-up of the skin on the surface 5 of an internal space 6 of the ingot 7 being cast.
The gas-water emulsion which is formed at that is discharged to the atmosphere along the slots 16 and through the local clearances between the mandrel and the ingot skin 17, then through the ports 18 and the central bore 12.
