PIPE-WRENCH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,123, dated March 6. 1888.

To all whom it may concern..-

Beit know u that I, HOMER PARMELEE,2L citizen of the United States, and a resident of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Pi pe- Grips; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a top view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a side view showing the pivoted spring.

My invention relates, to pipe-grips; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts as hereinafter set forth.

' The objects of the invention are to furnish a pipe-fitters tool that maybe handled with ease and rapidity, that may be applied and used in close quarters,tl1at will hold fast with out disfiguring the pipe, and will not get out of order.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the fulcrum-piece oft-he grip, said fulcrum-piece being provided with extensions B 0, between which the end of an operating-lever is secured. The fulcrum piece A is provided with,preferably, four aligned lugs or ears,B C D E, along its connectingpiece X, between which lugs the aligned projecting lugs G H I on the section K of the grip are secured by a pivot-bolt, L. To the upper edge of the section K the middle section, M, is hinged, said section M being provided along both of. its side edges with aligned connecting-lugs G H I.

To the middle section, M, the third or looking section N is hinged,said section being provided on its normally-free side edge with an outwardly-projecting lip, P, which, when the grip is closed around the pipe,engages atransverse shoulder, Q, on the connecting-piece X of the fulcrumpiece A. The hinged sections K M N are provided on their inner faces with detachablysecured lining-plates Y. These plates may be of any thickness to adapt the grip to different sizes of pipe. A spring, S, is secured to the extensions B C, respectively, and bears against the outer face of the hinged section K,and prevents it from falling or dropping back, and tends normally to press it toward the pipe being operated upon. The springs must be turned out of the way to remove the grip from the pipe.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to. secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, in a pipe-wrench, of the fulcrum-piece provided wit-h the extensions B O for attachment of a lever handle, and the transverse shoulder Q, the three hinged sec: tions K, M, and N, the outwardly-standing lip on free end of the section N,the pivoted spring S, and the detachable sectioned lining secured to the inner surfaces of said sections, substantially as specified.
