BENCH-DOG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,890, dated March 6, 1888.
Application filed December 27, 1887. Serial No. 259,063. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnnnnnro LARSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Royalton, in the county of Morrison and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bench-Dogs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlngs.
My invention relates to improvements in bench-dogs for the use of carpenters, joiners, &c., in which the longitudinally-reciprocating dog is provided with rack-teeth to engage with atoothed lever; and the objects of myimprovement are, first, to provide a device of this nature in which the sliding dog is inclosed and protected and guided by a frame extending substantially its whole length; second, to afford facilities for securing the device at both ends to the top of abench, and producing it at little expense. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a benchdog constructed in accordance with my invention and shown connected to a bench. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same with the cap-plate removed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same taken on the long axis of the dog.
In said drawings, A represents a flat metallic frame having its edge it turned up to support and guide the dog B substantially the whole length thereof against the pressure exerted upon it by the segmental toothed lever O. The frame A has at its ends lugs a that support the dog 13 against lateral pressure, and said lugs are perforated to receive rivets or screws to fasten the cap-plate A to the bottom frame, A. The dog B is in the form of a rack having teeth 1) formed on one of its edges, with which mesh the teeth 0, formed around the segmental periphery of the hand-lever O, pivoted at c to the frame A and its cap-plate.
To give freedom of play to the dog and its operating-lever, the capplate is supported upon cylindrical lugs a projecting up from against the back of said pawl.

The forward end of the dog is curved up at an acute angle to its body at I), to properly be forced into engagement with the end of a small thin board, asf, and elevate its top surface above that of the cap plate. The opposite end of said board is retained by avertically-adjustable dog, 9, of any suitable form.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim- 1. A bench-dog consisting of the frame A, having lugs at each end, a turned-up edge between said lugs, and a pendent pin at each end, with a dog having teeth on-one of its edges, a toothed segmental lever, a pawl pivoted to the frame A, and a cap-plate extending the whole length of said frame, substantially as and for the purpose described.
