Description
W. WALDRON.
Wagon-Brakes. No.152,024. Paxentedjunemnsm.
wnesses {jo/WLM@ 1-Venta UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. WALDRON, OF EAST DURHAM, NEYlT YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO SAMUEL LOVE, OF NEW YORK CITY.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-BRAKES.
l Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,024, dated June 16, 1874 applicatfon led December 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. WALDRoN, of East Durham, county of Green, State of New York, have invented certain :new and useful Improvements in lagon-Brakes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of the brake, illustrating its application to a wheel vehicle. Fig. 2 is avertieal view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation ofthe same, modified in the form and size of some of its parts.
My invention relates to that class of brakes operated by a hand or foot lever; and consists in the combination of a lever with a second lever, provided with a slot, draw-bar, shaft, and a brake-shoe, in such a manner that when the hand-lever is thrown forward it will operate the other parts of the brake and throw the brake-shoe back against the wheel and lock the brake in position, so as not to necessitate the holding forward ofthe said hand-lever, as in this class of brakes as heretofore constructed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it in reference to the drawings and letters otl vreference marked thereon, the same letters indicating like parts.
In the drawings, A'represents the body of the wagon. B is the wheel, to which the brake is to be applied when operated. Pivoted at a in a firm manner with the body, as in Fig. l, or to a plate, a', in Fig. 3, is the foot-lever O, which lever may be made in any suitable form, as shown, and, if desired, its terminating end may be provided with a handle for operation with the hand. D is a second lever, pivoted at e, the upper end of which is provided with a slot, m, which receives the pin n, made secure with the end of the lever O. The said pin may be `provided with a roller or a sliding washer, if desired. E is any suitable bracket secured to the under side ofthe body, in which bracket works the shaft or roller bar F, which is supported on the opposite side of the body by a similar bracket. Secured to the said rollerbar F is a lever, G, which is operated by the draw-rod H, secured to the said lever by the bolt a', and to the lever D by the bolt z. At
the end of the roller-bar E is secured the brake-shoe I in a rm manner.
Heretoi'ore this class of brakes have been so constructed as to require the lever C to be held forward by the hand or foot to cause the brake-shoe to be held in close contact with the wheel. In my invention the lever D, by its slot m acting with the rigid pin n made with the lever C, operates to lock and hold the shoe in` contact, with Jthe wheel, so that its action with the wheel will not operate through the medium of the lever G and draw-rod H to pull the lower end of the lever D back. This is an important feature, as it gives the driver the free use of his hands and feet when descending a hill, and especially when the hill is rough and the road is bad or winding in its course.
This brake is simple in its construction, and the operation of its several vparts ispositive, while the brake is itself effective and not liable to get out of order, and can be constructed by any ordinary blacksmith.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
In combination with the brake-shoel,rolle1 bar F, lever Gr, and draw-rod H, the lever D, provided with the slot m, and hand or footlever O, provided with the fixed pin n, to operate in said slot, as and for the purpose described.
