A. C. JAQU-ES.
Wagon Brake.
Patented April 13', 1869.
I No. 88,962.

ABRAM C. JAQUES, OF LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS. Letters Patent No. 88,962, dated Aprt'l13,1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-BRAKE AND TONGUE-SUPPORT.
The Schedulerefened to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, ABRAM C. JAQUES, of the cit and county of Leavenworth, and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self- Acting Wagon-Brakes, and the Method of Supporting the Tongue, or- Pole, from Bearing on the Neck-Yoke; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan or ,top view of the runninggear of a wagon, showing the sliding brake-bar, rook-shaft, and levers.
Figure 2 shows a side elevation of the same, with the'rear wheels removed.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the under side of the forward axle, showing the pole-supporter, 8E0.
Figure 4 shows a modification of the brake-operating mechanism, at the front end of the pole, or wagontongue.
The objeclwf my invention is either a self-acting wagon-brake, or one that can be controlled entirely by the will of the driver; and, also, a means by which the weight of the wagon-tongue, or pole, may be supported from off the neck-yoke, when in use, or let down to rest on the ground when desired. My invention consists in the construction and ar rangement of the supporting-plate and sliding brakebar, so as to admit of the brake-bar being shifted laterally, and relieve the wheels when backing.
To enable others to make and use my improvements, I will describe them more fully, referring to the drawings, and to the letters marked thereon.
, To any ordinary-constructed run ning-gear of a wagon, I attach by bolts a flat piece of wood or metal, A, on which I place a brake-bar, B, so that it may be moved longitudinally one way far enough to carry the brakeblocks b b, one on the inside, and the other on the outside of the rim of the hind wheels 0 O, the bar B being provided with a hand-lever, c, to shift it by, so that the point of the lever c, which extends down, will work into the recesses 43 0', made in the end of the bed-piece A, soas to allow the brake-bar B to" be moved back by the connecting-rods d d and rock-shaft D, which is provided with an upright lever-handle, d, so that the brake can be operated by the driver.
Nearly central on the under side of the rock-shaft D is. an arm, e, extending down, to which is attached a long connecting-rod, E, or cord, which extends along the under side of the reach F and the pole G, and con nects with the under side of the end of the vertical lever H, which is'pivoted to the pole G, near the forward end.
To the top end of the vertical lever His the neckyoke, attached as seenin fig. 1, so that when the wagon presses forward, in going down an inclined plane, the lever H acts on the brake-mechanism, and if the brakebar Bis placed in the proper position, the brake-blocks b'b will be brought to bear against the tire of the wheels In the backing of the wagon,-the bar 'B may be changed in its position, so as not to obstruct the rolling of the wheels.
Another mode of construction, which consists in having a small pulley, I, placed in the front end of the 1 tongue, or pole G, and a cord, g, attached to the neckyoke h, as seen in fig. 4, will operate on the brakemechanism, and produce the same result.
For supporting the pole G, I place a single piece of springy wood or metal, j, close to and parallel with the front axle-tree K, it resting on the top of the hounds k k underneath.
' Ialso place a spring, J, of any desired material, parallel with the pole G,'extending orward a sulficient distance for its support, the rear endresting under and against the under side of the front axle-tree K, it being held by a bolt, m, on stirrup, connecting it with the spring j, on the top of the bounds k. The front end is provided with a. slot, n, and a guide-piece, o, is placed in the under side of the pole, to hold it in place, or admit of the pole being let down to the ground.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The supporting-plate A and brake-bar B, so constructed and arranged as to allow the brake-bar to be shifted laterally, for the purpose'herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto subscribe myname, in the presence ofg A. O. JAQUES.
