In the drawings, F represents the top plate of a stove, in which there is a stove-hole covered by my improved lid made up of the center piece, A, and of the series of rings B, C, D, and E. Each of the parts of the cover A, i3, C, D, and E is provided in its top with arecess, G, adapted for receiving and holding the end of a stove-handle, whereby the cover or part of the cover is raised or handled conrEhis recess is preferably constructed with a central cross-bar, H, under which the end of the handle is adapted to enter and be retained in position. The top plate ofthe stoveis provided with a ledge, I, at and near its under surface about the stove-hole, on

which a corresponding dange, J, at and near the upper surface of the outer ring of the lid about its periphery, is adapted to rest, whereby the stove-cover is supported in place. Each 5o of the rings E, D, G, and Bis also provided with aledgc, I, of similar form and construetion as the ledge I, and each of the rings D C B and the central part, A, are provided with a flange-of similar form and construction to the flange J, whereby the central part, A, and the series of surrounding rings B, C, D, and Eare fitted and adapted to rest upon and be supported by the next successive outer ring, the last ring, E, being iitted to and supported on the plate F.

It will be seen that the central part, A, may be removed without disturbing the rings B,

(3, D, or E thereabout, or that any one of the several rings may be removed, thereby raising therewith the interior ring or rings and the central part, A, without disturbing the outer ring or rings whereby the stove-opening may be made oi' such size as is desired, whereby a single stove-hole, by the use of this peculiar lid, is adapted for use for any vessel, either large or small. By reason of the number of parts of which this stove-cover is composed,it is very desirable that the several recesses G for the handle should always be near together, and preferably in a common line convenient for use. For the purpose of securing an alignnient of the'reeesses G G, and for securing the several parts of the lid together in such position, I provide a recess, II, in the top of the ledge I of each of the rings of the cover. ThisA recess is constructed with vertical lateral sides and with an inclined rear surface. I also provide on the under side of the liange .I of the center piece, A, and ofeach of the rings eX- cept the outside one, a downwardly projecting locking-guide, L. This locking-guide L is provided with vertical lateral sides and with an upwardly-inclined front surface, whereby it is adapted to be received and retained in the recess K., thereby locking the parts together against any circular movement horizontally. rlhe'incline on the front surface of the guidelock L is intended for securing a ready and, easy adj nstnient of the parts to each other, and" the rear of the recess K is beveled correspondingly to tit the surface of the guide-loci; L, so as to make a comparatively tight joint at that place. 'Ihe guide-lock L and correspo ding recess K are so located that when the parts are properly adjusted together the seve al recesses G G will be in line, as shown in Fig l, the guidedocks L and recesses beingprefer- IOO ably located in the same line with the recesses G.. The number of rings of which the stovecover is vcomposed may be varied as desired.
