COMBINED CARRIAGE-STEP AND RECEIVER FOR GARBAGE AN'D 0THER REFUSE.
Q."PEC'IFICATION forming part; of Letters Patent No. 338,825, dated March 30, 1886.
Application filed November 19, 1885. Serial No. 183,368. (No model.)
refuse.
Myinvention has reference to improvements in carriage-steps, which are also used as receivers for garbage and other refuse.
In carrying out my invention I arrange a platform in the front of an entry toa building, or at other convenient location, which platform is adapted to be used as a carriage-step. This platform is also formed with removable plates, by preference locked by keys, by the removal of which access is obtained to one or more garbage or refuse receivers, which can be removed and replaced at will.
The great object of this class of invention is to prevent the necessity of employing garbage and ash barrels in private and other residences and places, which are necessarily not only unsightly but detrimental to public health and decency.
I am aware that carriage-steps have been previously employed to hold receivers for garbage and other refuse, and I am also aware that removable tops or covers for the entrances for inserting and removing the receivers have been used.
My invention has reference to the combination, with a carriage-step platform provided with one or more receiver-holders, of one or more top plates supported, held, and locked in position by peculiar mechanism, hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawings form part of this specification and illustrate what I consider thebest means of carrying out of my invention.
Figure 1 is a face view of my invention. (Shown in section from the curb-line.) Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, with one of the top plates removed to expose one of the receivers. Fig. 3 is a side view, and Fig. 4: an under side view of one of the keys for locking and unlocking the top plates. Fig. 5 is a central vertical section on the line 3/ 1 of Fig. 2, showing both top plates in position. Fig. 6 is an under side view, and Fig. 7 a central vertical section of one of the top plates on a larger scale.
In each of the views similar letters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts wherever they occur.
A represents the carriage step platform, which is formed in any ornamental style and of any suitable material and height. The sides a a of the platform A are adapted to rest on the sidewalk, and may be secured thereto by any suitable means, according to the nature of the same.
In the arrangement shown in the drawings I have represented the platform constructed with two removable top plates, one of which is shown removed in Fig. 2, and on a larger scale in Figs. 6 and 7, and also with two permanent holders for the receivers.
The platform A in the arrangement shown is constructed with two removable top plates, B, each of which is capable of removal or retention at will, and it is also provided with two permanent holders, K, for the receivers H. The top plates, 13, on their under sides are each provided with bracket-pieces O, in which are bored or formed bearings c, for the reception of one boss of a locking-piece, D, the opposite boss of which is adapted to be received in bearings bored or formed in the top plates, B. The locking-piece D on its opposite sides is provided with pins (Z d, to each of which are pivoted locking-levers E E, the outer ends of which slide in bearings F F, formed on or affixed to the top plates, 13. The extremities of the pivoted locking-levers E E are adapted to be thrown to and fro, when desired, by means of the key G, (shown separately by Figs. 3 and 4,) in such manner as to be engaged with or disengaged from the sides k is of the hold ers K.
H H are a pair of refuse-receivers, which in the arrangement shown are of rectangular configuration, and are provided with cross-stays h, which also serve as handles or means of elevating the receivers when full and of replacing them when empty.
In the drawings I haveshown two rectangular receivers, H; but I do not confine myself to any form or configuration. I can employ with equal facility receivers of circular, oval,
or polygonal configuration without departing from the principle of my invention.
Although I have shown a combined carriage-step and receiver for garbage provided with two receptacles, H, I do not limit myself to any specified number. I can use one or I can use any other number of receivers H.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The combination, with a carriage-step-platform, A, supported as described, and provided with one or more receiver holders, H, and
one or more removable top plates, B, of a.
bracket -piece, 0, bearings c, locking-piece D, pivoted levers E E, and bearings F F, arranged as described, and adapted to hold their top plates in position, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto aflixed my hand this 26th day of October, 1885.
FREDERICK W. CARLIN.
