Description

UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
IRA LYNDE, OF MARATHON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED CLOTHES-DRIER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,819, dated March 3, 1863.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, IRA LYNDE, of Mara thon, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have 'invented a new and Improved Clothes-Drier; and I do hereby declare that the followingis afull, clear, and eX- act description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specicatiomin which- Figure l represents a side elevation of my invention, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view otthe same.
Similar letters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of one or more'wheeled line-carrying clothesframes, in combination with a grooved sectional track elevated on posts in such a manner that said wheeled clothes frame or frames can be readily taken down from the track whenever the clothes drier is not used, or put up and supplied with clothes when the drier is to be put in use, and that two or more such clothes-frames can be connected toge: her and drawn in or pushed out on the track as may be required during the operation of drying the clothes.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
The principal object of this invention is to arrange a clothes-drier in such a manner that it extends from the door ofa house or cottage and that the clothes can be hung up inside the house and pushed out on the track for drying.
A represents the track, which is made in sections, the outer section, A, to be permanently attached to posts B, which are firmly inserted into the ground, and the inner section A to be supported with its outer end by one of the posts, and with its inner end by a cleat o r projection, a, inside the house. This section is so arranged thatit can readily be taken 0E out of the way when the clothesdrier is not used or put up when the operation of drying clothes is to commence. The track A A 1s provided with a groove, b, to receivethe wheels c of the frames C, to which the clotheslines d are secured. The wheels c are covered up by suitable caps to preserve them against the inliuence of rain or moisture, and
4they tit into the groove b, so that the frames C can be readily pushed along on the track in either direction. The lines d are secured to arms e, which are rigidly attached in a transverse direction to the frames C, extending far enough beyond their sides to make room for two or more lines on each side of the track, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 ofthe drawings. The line-carrying frames C are so arranged that the same can be readily connected by hooks f catching in staples g, or by other suitable means, and the end of the track A is provided with a stop, h, to prevent the frames C being pushed ofi.
The operation is as follows: When the clothes-drier is not used, the frames C and the inner section, A,of the track are taken down and put away in any7 convenient spot in the house. If the operation is to commence, the section A is put up and fastened in its place, and one of the frames C is placed on the track, their number being varied according to the quantity of clothes to be dried. 'lhe clothes are hung to the lines ofthe first frame, and if this frame is full it is pushed out on the track. A second frame is put up, tllled with clothes, fastened to the first frame, and pushed out, and so on until all the clothes are hung up. If a sudden storm arises, the frames with all the clothes on can be readily taken oft' from the track and carried in the house, and the operation of hanging up or taking down the clothes can be carried on inside the house.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the wheeled line carrying clothes-frames U, (one or more,) in combinat-ion with the sectional grooved elevated track A A, constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose herein shown and described.
IRA LYNDE.
