ORLANDO M. POND AND JOHN PROVAN, OF INDEPENDENCE, IOXVA.
WlRE-JOiNING MACHINE.
:SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,176, dated February 21, 1888.
Application filed December 5, 1887.
To all whom it 11mg concern:
Be it known that we, ORLANDO M. POND and Join: PROVAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Buchanan and State of Iowa, have invented certain, new and useful Improvements in Vire- Joining Machines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wire-joining machines, designed more especially for forming wire hoops, and it has for its object to provide a simple and cheap machine-one that will be very eiiicient in operation and durable.
To the above ends, and to such others as the invention maypertain, the same consists in the peculiar combinations and the novel construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the device constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the coilers removed. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the holding-clamp removed. Figs. at and 5 represent the ends of the wire at different stages of the formation of the hoop.
Referring; now to the details of the drawings, A designates a suitable bed-plate provided with longitudinal grooves c.
B O are rack-bars, the teethb cof which work in said grooves. Secured to the face of these rack-bars, or formed integral therewith, are the racks D E.
Secured to the baseplate is the frame F, in which is journaled at one end the pinion G, the shaft of which is provided with a suitable crank-handle, d, by which it is operated. This pinion is arranged midway between the racks B C, so as to engage the teeth Z) 0 thereof. Suitablyjournaled in this frame are the coilers H, diametrically opposite each other, as shown. Each of these coilers is constructed as shown in Fig. 2, and consists of the shaft 0, formed at one end with the shoulder or lugf,
Serial No. 257,015. (No model.)
and the pinion fast upon said shaft and so arranged as to engage with the racks D E upon the face of the rack-bars B 0. Both the shaft and pinion are provided with a longitudinal slot, h, for the purpose hereinafter described.
I is the holding-clamp, whichis constructed as shown in Fig. 3.
J is a bar secured to the lower end of the frame F, by means of the bolts hand formed with a shoulder, j, in such position in relation to the other parts that it will be substantially in line with the slots of the coilers. Slidingly secured to the bar J is the clamp K, formed with longitudinal slots is, in which work the bolts 21, as shown. This clamp is formed with a recess, 1, which receives and in which works the cam-head m of the lever L, sleeved on one of the bolts 1'. The opposite end of the clamp K is formed with a toe, n, which engages the shoulder j of the bar J, so as to leave a space, 0, between the same to receive the wire.
The operation is as follows: The parts being in position shown in Fig. l, the ends of the wire are laid in the slots h of the coilers and overlapped in the space 0 of the clamp, and the clamp-bar K then set forward by means of the lever L and its cam-head, so as to firmly hold the wire. The crank-handle d is turned. This, through the medium of the pinion G, imparts to the rack-bars a motion in opposite directions. The motion of these rack-bars, through the engagement of the racks D E with the pinions 9 of the coilers, imparts to said coilers a rotary motion in opposite directions. One end of the wire is bent upward with the amount of wire necessary to make the wrap and the fastening-point r, and the other end bent down ward with wire enough to make the wrap. WVhen the coilers are rotated, as above described, the lugs or lipsf of the twistershafts will catch the bent ends and wrap them tightly around the main wire,as shown in Fig. 5, leaving the fastening-point r to be driven into the barrel, tub, or other article on which the hoop is used for the purpose of securing the same in place.
Various modifications in details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
hat we claim as new isl. The combination, with the reciprocating rack-bars having teeth on their top faces and adjacent sidesQof the slotted coilers engaging with the teeth on the face of the rack-bars and actuated thereby, and the pinion G, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the reciprocating raclcbars having teeth on their top faces and adjacent sides, of the slotted toothed coilers actuated thereby, the pinion G, and a holdingclamp for the wire arranged at right angles to the axes of the coilers, as set forth.
3. lhe combination, with the reciprocating rack-bars having teeth on their top faces and. adjacent sides and the holding-clamp arranged at right angles to the axes of the coilers, of the coilers, each comprising a slotted shaft provided with a lip, f, and a pinion on said shaft actuated by the rackbars, and the pinion G, as set forth.
4. The combination, with the bed-plate and the rack-bars, of the pinion G, jonrnaled in said bed-plate and arrangedt'o actuate said rack-bars in opposite directions, the coilers supported by said bed-plate with their axes at right angles to that of the pinion, and the hold ing-clamp for the wire, substantially as described. 1
5. The combination, with the rack-bars and coilers, of the bar J, arranged at right angles to the axes of the twisters, the clamp-bar K, movable on the bar J, and the lever L, having a cam-head engaging the bar K, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In'testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
ORLANDO M. POND. JOHN PROVAN.
