  • the carrying device embodying the present invention includes a cylindrical ring 11, around which a coil of barbed wire 12 may be wound,
  • the ring 11 is provided at its bottom side with a radially projecting ring flange l4 and at its upper side with axial lips or projections 15 to which handle 13 is flxed.
  • the handle 13 consists of a U- shaped piece of wire having two legs 16 and a base 17. The free ends of the legs 16 are bent to the outside and engage with pre-tension from the inside through openings in the projections 15.
  • the wire of the handle 13 may be coated with aprotective layer of synthetic material.
  • the length of the base 17 between the legs 16 approximately corresponds to the inside diameter of the central opening 18 of the coil of barbed wire 12 as shown in FIG. 2.
  • the axial length or height of the cylindrical ring 11 corresponds to the height of a layer of a few windings of the wire coil 12.
  • the length or width of the radial projection of the ring flange I4 is normally designed in such a way that the flange 14 engages between adjacent windings of the wire at the open inside surface of coil 12.
  • radial projections may be fixed at spaced points on the outer side of the ring.
  • FIGS. 4a and 6 show a modification of the device of the present invention in which the outer surface of the ring is provided with spaced projections 19, 20 and 21 in addition to the ring flange 14.
  • the ring flange 14 is also provided with a radially projecting lip 21 under the projection 20.
  • the radial projections 19 and 21 provide a reinforcement of the ring 11 and in addition provide particular points of contact on which the windings of barbed wire exert a lateral pressure and through which extra tension originates as an aid to prevent the windings from slipping off.
  • the ring 11 is located in the central bore 18 in such a way that the top edge of the ring and the top surface of the coil are essentially at the same level with the lips 15 which are provided for attaching the handle projecting thereabove.
  • the hinge joints are thus located free from the coil of barbed wire, so that the handle 13 can be freely swung down on the upper plane of the coil, as can be seen in particular in FIG. 3.
  • the ring 11, the ring flange l4 and the projections such as 15 normally will be made in one piece and, preferably, of a synthetic material such as a plastic (e.g. polyethylene).
  • the collapsible handle When piling up a number of coils, the collapsible handle may also be used to improve the stability of the pile, namely by positioning the handle upright and having it engaged in the central bore of the coil immediately thereabove.
  • the coils are preferably piled up in such a way that the plane of the handle of an underlying coil is in each case perpendicular to the plane of the handle of the coil placed thereupon.
  • a typical coil of barbed wire would have, say, an outside diameter of approximately 30 to 40 cm, an inside diameter of approximately 10 to 12 cm and a height of approximately 20 to 30 cm.
  • the axial length of the ring 11 or the carrying device would preferably measure about 2cm
  • the radial width of the ring flange would be approximately 0.3cm
  • the thickness of the ring material would be approximately 0.30m.
  • a light weight material is normally entirely suitable for the bearing ring.
  • each of these ribs 20 is provided with a perforation or hole which continues through the ring 11; the rib 20 is also provided at this point with a depression or groove 22 which continues in an upward direction in the plane of the rib 20 which is obliquely cut off and turned back to the inside.
  • the bent end 23 of the leg 16 is located almost completely in the depression or groove 22 of the rib 20 so that the turning of the handle 13 is not hampered by any windings running over these ribs.
  • the carrying device of the present invention comprises a substantially cylindrical ring and a handle attached to this ring, wherein the height of the ring corresponds to the height of only a few piled up windings of the coiled material and wherein the ring is provided with radially outward projecting elements.
  • the radially projecting elements of the ring may simply consist of a ring flange formed by raising the bottom edge of the ring.
  • the ring When the carrying device supports a coil of coilable material, the ring is positioned inside the coil with a few (or a fraction) of the windings of the coiled material resting directly against the ring.
  • the radially projecting elements of the ring are engaged between adjacent windings of the coil and these provide the supporting connection for the ring inside the coil.
  • the handle projects from one side of the coil.
  • the ring is preferably located in the center bore of the coil in such a way that the top edge of the ring lies approximately in the same plane as the upper side of the coil and so that the turnability of the handle is not prevented.
  • upward projecting lips or similar projections may be provided, which mainly protrude in an axial direction and to which the handle is attached.
  • the length or width of the radially projecting elements is preferably at least equal to the thickness of one layer of coiled material, thus allowing the projecting elements to engage far enough between the windings of the material in order to provide a firm fixation of the ring in the coil.
