rvrrnn rates JOHN \V. KIRKPATRICK, CF NE\VBURYPORT, ASSIGNOR TO THE RUSSIA CEMENT COMPANY, OF GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
PACKAGE FOR LIQUID GLUE, MUCILAGE, 81,0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 377,034. dated January 31, 1888.
Application filed July 16, 1887.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN W. KIRKPATRICK, of Newbnryport, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Packages for Liquid Glue, Mucilage, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in packages for liquid glue and mucilage.
The object is to provide an air-tight cap for liquid glue and mucilage cans, and one in which the brush may be inserted for any distance and be securely held in its position.
A further object is to provide a simple and inexpensive cap for liquid glue and mucilage cans, and also to provide means for easily removing the cap from the cans, and still further to provide means for removing the superfluous liquid from the brush as it is withdrawn from the can without allowing the liquid to flow over the outside of the can.
- \Vit-h these ends in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of my improved package, the brush being inserted ready for use. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same as it appears during shipment before the disk has been punctured for the insertion of the brush. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the'cap with the elastic plug removed. Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of the combined elastic plug and disk as it appears before being inserted into the screw-cap. Fig. 5 is a detached view of the grippinghandles.
A represents a liquid glue or mucilage can having a screw-threaded neck, B,secured upon its top. Around the opening a in the top the flange formed serves as a rest for the brush, if desired, for this purpose, and also to remove the superfluous liquid from the brush as it is removed from the can. The screw-cap B is provided, also, with a flange at its upper edge projecting downwardly and inwardly, which further acts as a means for removing the superfluous liquid, and particularly to prevent the Serial No. 244,537.
(No model.)
liquid from running over the edge onto the outside when a large quantity of mucilage IS on the brush.
The cap C is adapted to screw over the neck 13 in the usual manner, and is provided with an opening, 0, in the center of its top. Soldered, preferably, halfway around the cap there is a bail,I),on each end of which is formed a grippinghandle, (I, projecting outwardly and downwardly a sufficient distance to give a good hold to the person removing the cap. The handles (1 are thus provided with a bail to give an extensive surface on which to secure them to the cap.
E represents the elastic plug having a perforation, 6, extending a little way into its top, and provided with a restricted neck, e, of a size tojust enter and snugly fit in the opening 0 in the top of the cap. Below this neck a thin disk, 0 is integrally formed, its size being such as to just fit the .cap and be seated on the upper edge of the neck B, forming an air-tight joint between the latter and the cap. From the construction of the plug with the perforation 0 it may easily be contracted into a size to enter the opening 0; or, on the other hand, the disk 0" is so thin that it might be folded in such a manner as to be inserted through the opening downwardly instead of the plug upwardly. As far as described, the package 1s in condition for shipment; but now, in order to insert the brush F through the disk, thelatter has to be punctured, after which the brush may be inserted and held at any elevation while in the can by the contact of the rubber against the brush. Thus a most objectionable feature common to many cans is obviatedthat is, the dropping of more of the brush than is necessary into the liquid. These combined elastic plugs and disks might be madein large numbers and very cheaply, so that one or more might be supplied with each package in trade in case that one wears before the glue or 1nucilage is exhausted.
It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself to the particular construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters I 5. In packages for liquid glue and mucilage,
Patent, is l l. A screwcap for receptacles, provided with an opening in its top and a removable elastic plug adapted to enter the opening, said plug having a disk formed thereon, snbstantially as set forth.
2. A screw-cap for receptacles, having an opening in its top and a removable perforated elastic plug adapted to enter said opening, substantially as set forth.
3. A screw-cap for receptacles, having an opening in its top and a removable elastic perforated plug, said plug having a restricted neck'and an elastic disk formed integral therewith, substantially as set forth.
4. A screw-cap for receptacles, having a bail and handles rigidly secured thereto, an opening in its top, and a removable elastic plug adapted to enter the opening in the cap, substantially as set forth.
6. In a screw-cap for receptacles, a bail we 0 tending partway around said cap and rigidly secured thereto, and having handles or eyes on its ends. 4
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib- 35 ing witnesses.
JOHN W. KIRKPATRICK.
