Description

(No Model.)
UNITE n STATES "PATENT OF ICE f CHRISTIE L. YOUNG, on SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, Assrenoa To 7r CHARLES s. sAXTo'N, on SAME PLACE.
TOOL-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 377,003, dated January 24, 1898. A A, Application filed February 21, 1687. Serial 1\"o.228,291. No model) To all whom :it'mapy concern.- A
Be it known that I, CHRISTIE L. -YOUl IG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and Stateot 'Massachnsetts, have invented new and useful with a tool-ejector; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement ofthe various parts of the handle, all as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim. I
In the drawing forming part of this specification is illustrated, partly in longitudinal section and partlyin side elevation, a tool-handle constructed according to my invention, said drawing showing a tool connected with said handlep In the drawing, a is the body of-the handle,
consisting of wood or any other suitable'mate cured the tool-shank socket b, which is tapered.
rial. The said'handle-body a isperfor'ated longitudinally, and in one end thereof is se-.
internally, as shown, andhas its lower end inner part of the body a.
perforated. Within the perforation in the handle-body, between said tool-shank socket andthe rear end of said body, is placed an ejector-pin, 0, one end of which passes through the bottomof said tool-shank socket-,and the opposite end thereof extends-beyond the rear .end of the handle-body a.
The said ejectorpin 0 has ashoulder, 3, formed thereon'near the tool-shank socket, and a second shoulder at 4 near its rear'end. Said ejector-pin has a freeendwise movement within the body a, said shoulder 4 thereon limiting its said movement in a rearward direction by the impact of said shoulder at against a shoulder formed in the The said shoulder 3 on the pin 0 limits the movement of the latter in a direction toward the toolshanksocket b by striking against thelower end of thelatterr 4 5 Y A The above described tool-handle is adapted to be used with tools having thereon a tapered Y shank which fits closelythe said-tapered socket b. In the drawing is represented a reamer, 5,1
having a'-shank, 6, thereon, tapered as above 50 described, andsaid handleisadaptedto bens'ed' v y with any tool having a tapering shanl( which1 I fits its socket closely enough to prevent the} 00] I from turning when it is used. 2 I
[When no toolis in the handle, the ejectorpin 0 has such a free endwise movement that,-
one end thereof enters the bottom-of the socket b as far as it is permitted by the shoulder 3 thereon; but when the tool-shank 6 is forc'edinto the socket b the lower end of said shank 6o strikes the end of the ejector-pin and pushes it endwise, causing one end thereof to project beyond the rear end of the body a, asshown in the drawing, and to remove the tool fromthe handle it is only necessary to strike the said 65,
projecting end of the ejector-pin, thus driving 4 .it quickly againsttheend of thetaperingshank I m 6, whereby the tool is quickly thrown out of the handle. 7 I
WhatI claim as 'my invention is-- The herein-described tool-handle,consisting of the handle having the internally' t apered tool-shank socket b, rigidly secured in one end thereof, and the ejector-pin 0, extending from beyond the rear end of said handle ands'ecured' 75 withinithe latter, said pin having'a-freeend wise movementin the handle, and having one, end entering the inner end of said socket, com= I bined with a tool having a tapering shank-fitting said socket and capable of engagement 8Q with the inner end of said pin, substantially as set forth. p Y I A O. L. YOUNGI.
